OK, sorry if this is kind of long but it is just so silly.

So I moved into a new apartment about 3 months ago. I soon discovered that the young man who lives underneath me likes to play loud rap music at two o'clock in the morning. Now I have nothing against rap music but at 2 am when you are trying to sleep and the base is vibrating your floor it can be quite annoying.

Finally after this hapening a few more times I go and complain to the office, I assume they send him a memo and the 2:00 am loud music stops. This was about a month ago.

So I get home last night and there is a memo on my door from the complex that says my neighbors have complained about excess noise coming from my apartment. Since I work from 8am-6pm and I am usually in bed by 11:00 or so I don't make very much noise. I put the TV on in the morning and at normal night hours, and I don't listen to my music loudly. The extent on "noise" coming from my apartment is when I vacuum once a week.

It doesn't take a rocket scientest to figure out whats going on. So I am pretty pissed of and I go to the complex managers office this morning. I explain the situation to her and express how annoyed I am.The manager has no knowledge of the alleged offense and I tell her I would like to know where the "noise" was coming from so I can change any disruptive habits I may have. The office worker who took the complaint happend to be there and she procedes to explain to me that the guy who lives under me complained that I make to much noise when I walk from my living room to my bedroom. The manager then gets this dumbstruck look on her face and I say" so you are telling me that I got an official complaint letter because I walk around my apartment?" I then explain that it is obviously a juvinile attempt at revenge and the whole situation is absurd. The manager then offers an apology and says she will take care of it and the complaint will be removed from my file.

The whole situation was so stupid and next time I see this guy it's going to be really hard not to kick his ass. Oh well, just wanted to vent.

The lady that took the complaint should have laughed at the kid, not taken him seriously and giving you a memo. That person should be fired for being an idiot.

let me know how this goes. my friend bought a condo and was blasting rap music at like 1am/2am on a friday nite (there was about 5 of us). someone rang his bell and complained. he had this very "this is my place, i own it, i can do whatever i want in it and i can't be kicked out" kind of air about him and i tried to advise him that although the process is long eventually it can lead to him having to sell his condo and leave by virtue of the condo board's mandate.

The other night (Wednesday night) when I was coming home from work at 11pm there was a dude on the first floor who was chillin' by himself on his porch, blaring some Tejano music. I walked up to our third floor apartment and I could still feel and hear the music. My girlfriend was pissed as hell since she had been trying to study, and she had called the courtesy officer to complain just before I got home. Shortly afterwards, the music got turned down and we got some peace.

I wonder how his direct neighbors (next door and upstairs from him) felt about that. It was absurd that we could feel his music two stories up...

If you have a bowling ball... good. If not, get one. Roll it slowly up and down the hall.

Get some fish oil. Put it in a sprayable thing (squirtgun, mister...) walk by his apt and give a spray or two on the door in the middle of the night when nobody is around...

The condo association can make his life hell and if the neighbors want to be real dicks they can always call the police and your friend can be cited.
The fact that is was a Friday night makes it a somewhat excusable, but it comes down to having coutesy for your neighbors. The type of music really doesn't make a difference, but at 2:00 am people need to be aware of the other people around them.

LOL! We laugh about it now, but damn that wasn't fun at the time. Now, we can start doing laundry at whatever the time we want to, like the other night when one of the kids got sick in his bed. At 4am, the wife put everything in the washer and started it up :D

A friend of mine in Philly had a horrible time with people living below her. Twice, actually (2 different people).

The first couple were drug addicts. Complete trash. Every once in awhile, she would complain about them fighting, and it got to the point where she had to call the cops a few times. So, of course, they start amking retarded claims. She got back from class one day to find the office manager at her door. The people downstairs had complained about noise coming from her apartment. No one was even in it all day.

Another time, she dropped something at 1 or 2 in the morning, woke them up and they just started screaming at her through the floor. The guy even threatened to stab her. Again, cops called, but nothing done. Good thing was that their lease was up soon anyway when she moved in, so she didn't have to put up with it for long.

The second guy was a complete asshole. CONSTANTLY complained about the noise. What noise? Her walking around the apartment. Hardwood floors squeek though but he was CONSTANTLY complainging about it. The manager eventually told the guy to leaver her alone.

The funny part is, though, the guy moved to another, 2nd floor apartment (a smaller one) and the people below him started complaining about his nosie since he was the typical "I can do what I want, but no one has the right to even annoy me at all" type.

Anyway, I hope the guy below you doesn't threaten your life, Lathum. ;)

In the last apartment my wife and I lived in, our upstairs neighbor was a Cop, his wife, and their five teenage kids. These were fairly upscale apartments, with a waiting list to get in. Noise was typically not an issue, especially noise from people walking around in the apartment above you. Well we had the exception. These teenage kids were all athletes. They woke up at 5 in the morning, and they'd warmup/exercise before going out for their morning runs. It gets a little old having someone jog in place above your bed at 5 in the morning every morning.

Oh and as for people complaining about upstairs neighbors walking. Well I have a friend who always lives upstairs, and I seriously don't think he has ever learned how to walk properly. He stomps everywhere. He doesn't do it on purpose, he just stomps when he walks. He is always getting complaints from downstairs neighbors. Now he lives in a single level complex, so that is better. But the other day he did have a note pinned to his door by his neighbor saying that he slams his toilet lid too loudly, and makes too much noise while showering.

I always try to get a top floor apartment now. I think a real estate developer could make a mint if he produced apartments that actually have some sound proofing in the floor.

My wife and I lived in our previous apartment for nearly 5 years. When we first moved in, there was a redneck family next door. The husband greeted us by saying "My wife is going to visit her mother next week. I might have some 'company'. If we bug you, just let me know (wink wink) ;) " The apartment was declared abandoned 2 weeks later.

Above us, we had another family with 5 kids. One of them enjoyed flushing his t-shirts down the toliet. Over Veteran's Day, the plumbing overflowed 8 times. Nothing too disguisting, but water leaking through the ceiling and vents is disconcerting. Maintenance had to remove their toliet and charge them for the hassle. :D

After the family above us moved out, we had the college party guys. They enjoyed their music, and they enjoyed it loud. My wife says I'm intolerant. I say I'm sensitive to bass. Either way, after they told me to fuck off when I complained, I started calling the cops. The scariest thing was when the lease-holder followed me out to my car to tell me that he would get kicked out the next time the cops were called, and why didn't I just talk to them. They were gone shortly thereafter.

This is on top of the plumbing disasters I described last year.

This would be why we finally moved as soon as we were able to.

Lathum, I think the problem might have to do with you going straight to the office. Always approach the individual(s) first before getting 'management' involved. Otherwise things can quickly deteriorate into tattle-tail with memos and such.

I couldn't disagree more. The reason there is an office is they get paid to deal with this sort of shit. I shouldn't have to be inconvienienced at 2 am and I certainly aren't going to get up, get dressed, and go knock on some punks door and ask him to turn it down where he'll probably tell me to fuck off anyway. In my opinion if someone is rude enough to play their music that loud at that time then they are to ignorant to be reasond with and I should go through the proper channels.

Based on one night, I highly doubt someone would get up, dress, and deal with that at the moment. Repeated behaviour like this I have always dealt with face to face, on an individual level first. I think that's appropriate if you're living in a house and it relates to calling the police. An apartment complex is a different story. The manager in mine expects us to come to her, rather than try and handle it ourselves. Besides, if you're blasting music at 2 AM in an apartment complex, you're definitely angering someone somewhere, so you forfeit the right for a "man to man" talk.
