I'm still playing CM 03/04. I have so much fun with it, I have a hard time justifying the new version. So I'm going to hold out till my Birthday in April.

In any case. In my current game, I have nursed Dagenwood and Redbridge from the Conference up to the first division. We have been on a tear this season going 27..well 28 matches without a loss. We are in the League Cup Quarter Final. Pitted against Man United. We are on a roll, but it's Man U we're facing. We're running a wide open offense, and since I brought in the Frenchman Luci to strengthen our goal play, we have been holding the opposition down a bit. When I look at their starting roster, I am disheartened,
but I figure we have a chance. I hope against hope.

An early start as we steal an early errant pass, turn it into a two on one, and score. Then ten minutes later my Striker is pulled down in the Penalty Area. We convert the penalty, and lead two nil.
At about the 35 minute mark of the first half one of my midfielders see my aggressive mid fielder Julison(or some such) breaking between defenders. A 40 yard pass sets the play up perfectly and my midfielder lobs a 30 yard goal over the hard charging Man U goaltender. The rout is on, but we had earlier surrendered three goals to blow a three goal lead this season, so I didn't figure it was a foregone conclusion. As a result I keep the pressure on. Attacking mentallity, and I even turn the counter attack on.
Then with just minutes left in the first half, they earn a red card for pulling down my striker again. Way to go counter attack. This time we are just out of the Penalty area, and are unable to convert the free kick.
In the second half we are up a man, and we pour it on. The counter attack comes up twice more yielding two more goals. Giving us a 5-nil lead with 10 minutes remaining. I now know that we are in the midst of one of our biggest wins ever.
In extra time Juliuson completes his hat-trick in a great play where he shoots, gets the roubound, and shoots again. The goalie blocks it again, pushing the ball almost wide it hits the post and carroms away from the goal. Juliuson gets control again, makes some move that completely disorients the one Defending dot, and drives the ball past the goalie, who tips the ball yet again into the post, but this time into the goal.

In any case I continue the game(Well OKAY I watched a few replayshttp://dynamic2.gamespy.com/%7Efof/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif) read my emails, and proceed to save the game. Where I promptly get an error, and am forced to the desktop.

Unfair! I say. Now I'm guessing that some sort of infinite improbability detector kicked in and sought to reverse my efforts, but I will survive. I am heartened. I am undeterred! We shall overcome! We will replay that match and beat those basted Imps again! I mean it. If I have to play it half a dozen times we will win again!!!

Dola,

Actuall I'll probably only replay it once, but I thought playing it over and over until we win again sounded better above.

Sorry to hear that - sounded like a great match ...

Do you remember what the error was, just so I can double check its not present in FM (which will ensure no one else shares your frustration in the future).

PS. That pkm for that match may still be on your hard-drive if you check (if you re-run the game then it'll be re-splatted with your latest version of that fixture) ... just in case you want to archive it.

The pkm file? That is the actual match file..correct? The file you use to view old or freshly generated matches. I had thought about that. I'll try and dig it up. Probably have to do some research on your board to make sure I've got it. Heh actually I'll just save the "rematch" as that is the one that will go down in the books. Hopefully we'll win again, as I can use the 300k payday more than the Imps. Also that way the only folks hurt are the guys that scored in the original game, so namely Juliuson, but he has been getting a big head lately in any case.

Also I really should add, that this kind of thing is not something that typically happens in my CM experience. The bug that is. Any type of crash in CM seems to be a quite rare event. The message indicated that there was a log file generated. I haven't played since then, so I should be able to grab that entire log file.

Thanks for asking me to identify the error. Your commitment to the continued excellence of your product is what keeps me buying, even if i'm not doing so in a timely manner.

"The pkm file? That is the actual match file"
Yeah thats the one - stands for 'packed match' ... us programmers love 3 letter abbreviations for some reason ;)

If you do manage to rummage up the log them if possible please email it to [email protected] (zipped up if possible our sys admin isn't very pleased that my email account spans 4Gb of disk-space already :D ).

are you sure the error wasn't that you actually brought Dag & Red all the way up to the 1? :)

I'm seriously thinking the problem was the fact that I was listening to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxay on my stereo at the time I was playing it. In fact the very chapter discussing the infinite improbability drive system finished just seconds before the teams took to the pitch. Seriously, Dag and Red in the first division advancing to the League Cup Semi-final by defeating Manchester United by a score of six - nil. Actually Man U only got 4 shots on goal. Add it all up and I'm lucky that it was just the game that crashed during saving. If this happened in Real Life an asteroid would have smashed into the earth. Well either that or a Vogon Constructor Fleet.

Yes, an asteroid hit has better odds.

Anyways, thats what makes CM/FM great. With super managing, the impossible can happen. Anything less than that, you'll get the boot.

LLM is tough - one thing I wish I could change about CM 03/04 (havent played FM yet) is that when giving the boot, that they would consider your past performance a little more.

I've brought 3 teams from either 3 or Conf up to Division 1, and the 2nd or 3rd average or below average season in a row in Division 1, and it's the boot. No consideration of where you were only 4-5 years ago, wallowing in the 3 or the Conf.

One time, went from the 3 to 2 to 1 in 2 seasons, 3rd season battled for the playoff in Division 1, then had a bad season in the 4th season close to delegation, and I got the boot. I was livid.

Yeah, but what can you do for me now?

I haven't been able to find the error log, unless it is named Dr. Watson or somesuch. That is about the only file that seems to have been generated about that time. Then again I'm having trouble finding even the .pkm file

Heh could happen - remember Wimbledon rose from non-league status to Premiership within 10 years ....

(and appear to be heading back down just as quickly now as the 'MK Dons' - but thats another story ;) )

Things like this do tend to happen often IRL though. Look at Bayern Munich, they let Hitzfeld go after a mediocre campaign, despite his winning a number of trophies in his time with the club. Sometimes, a change for change's sake is needed. But it can definitely be a little harsh when you are the one being changed ;)
