The old one is a 1994 Dodge Colt with close to 160k miles on it.
The new one is a 2005 Toyota Matrix :)

My wife's car is a 1999 Toyota Corolla, but we're looking to trade that in for either a Volvo wagon, Audi A4 or A6 or a Saab 9-3 or 9-5. Anyone have any experience with these models?

high 30s usually, but I am not a very efficient driver. Air conditioning is always on and i rarely go the speed limit.

When we travel (Atlanta-NorthCarolina a few times and Atlanta-Florida for the honeymoon), I can consistantly get high 30s going 15 over the speed limit. If I stick it on cruise at 5 over it's very reasonable to get 42-44 MPG for stretches.

That's with the automatic transmission. I understand that the manual is supposed to be rate 2-5 MPG better, but I can't drive a stick :(

This won't make you feel manlier, but this was my wife's car before the Matrix (although a 2000 one). I got to drive it when she was off from work pregnant, and while she stayed at home after giving birth. I could get very high 40ish MPG with the kind of commute I did to/from work. Stick shift, it was kinda fun to drive...

FMThat is ok. I don't rely on the car to support my feeling of manhood ;)

Mine is an automatic, and I drive in New Orleans which doesn't have the most gas friendly traffic patterns, but I still get around 40 consistently. I'm not worried about the cost of gas as much as I want at least a semi-ecological friendly car.

Edited to add: It is a fun car to drive. Despite being automatic and getting good gas mileage, it has suprising acceleration when needed.

LOL! :D

My commute is mostly country roads with speed limits at 55, so you never drive at 75 or 80, but don't have any traffic lights. It's about 20 miles, just enough for me to unplug from work while listening to a CD :)

I agree with the acceleration, good to hear it's not bad with the auto tranny. We always buy/lease stick shift cars, as we almost never have to drive in heavy traffic, and we both actually like to drive stick more than automatic. Plus, it's cheaper :)

As I've said in this thread, I drive 20 miles in country roads to get to work. Yeah I could get a ride with somebody else, but I like that if I have to stay a bit later, I'm never attached to anybody. And with 2 kids and the cold Quebec weather, the bus, or the bicycle don't make much sense for us :)

Mine's an automatic, and yes, I love where they've put the stick. Thought it might be annoying at first, but now it seems very natural. Also love the fold down seats in the back. It's actually easier to use the Matrix instead of my wife's Town and Country when we have to move big stuff.

If/when my wife's car dies (hey, it's the Corolla's twin, so who knows), she'll take the Elantra and I'll take the Mazda, although we'll probably try to carpool more often. She puts tons of miles on her car for her job, so we don't want her voiding the warranties on our newer cars.
