View Full Version : My tiny freind passes away.
My little companion Oscar,a 5 year old guinea pig passed away on Sunday.My wife and i are very sad for losing this little guy.
Our little guinea had surgery last week to fix his teeth which had over grown and trapped his tongue at the back of his mouth.The vet did'nt know if he would survive the surgury but being the true fighter he was he came out of it o.k,but unfortunatly he did not eat after the surgury which is common.We had to hand feed him with a syringe and baby food for the last week but it just seemed that he did'nt have the will anymore.The last few days he seemed to pick up a bit but Sunday morning he was lying on his side which he never does,I took him out of his cage and held him for an hour.He coughed a few times and then went to sleep and did'nt wake up.
He will join his freind our dog Lady(who passed 2 months ago).They were the best of freinds as the dog really took a shine to this furry little creature.Lying in the sun together in front of the window with the Pig snuggled up beside the dog, it was quite a site to see.
My wife is very heart broken,to help her heal a bit i purchased her a "skinny" pig today(hairless guinea pig) he looks like a little hand held hippopotomus.
Of course,his name will be Felix.(Oscar and Felix...the Odd couple)

As my cat Halikilangi gets older (he's seven years old) I start to think more and more about how sad it's going to be when he goes. I never really had to worry about that as a kid, since it seems like the cats we did have when I was young wound up being given away when we moved.
Hopefully Kilangi has many more years with us.

I used to breed guinea pigs when I was younger. At one time I had ten of those little boogers in my bed room. They are the best small pets ever. I'm trully sorry for your loss.

bbor, sorry to hear about your guinea pig, we used to have a bunch of them when I was a kid, I liked them a lot. Other then a fish that died last year I haven't had any pets for awhile.

A friend of mine had her guinea pig die a few months ago too. His name was Panda Bear because it looked like a tiny panda. :) He lived to be about 4 or 5 too, which I think is pretty long for a guinea pig.

What does that name mean?It is very unusual.
It's a Samoan name, but I really don't know what it means. I stole it from a safety who played for UTEP from '96-'97, Halakilangi Muagatutia. That dude played so hard and laid such vicious hits that he became my favorite player on the team...
Apparently he's still bouncing around the AFL2.

As crazy as this may seem, us having to put to sleep our little dog, 9 years ago, was the sign to my wife that she felt ready to have a child. The dog was having epilepsy seizures and would sometime start shaking in the middle of the night. She gave him some medication for a while before he got to be in too much pain... We still miss ToTo... We got two amazing kids, you can't compare to that, but everytime I see a picture of ToTo, I feel sad...

very true. We had taken class with him, brought him down from a very dominant nature to a neutral one. He was walking by pulling on the leash at first, to walking without pulling, right in step with me. Poor little thing. We now have a house and some sort of backyard. I hope someday we'll have another, bigger dog, like a labrador or golden retriever. The wife says she still sees ToTo too much to own another dog, and it's been 9 years. Maybe when the youngest kid will be like 5 or 6, we'll see...

Yeah, it's the downside of owning pets. I think I'll stop one day just because of the sadness you undergo when they die. But the happiness outweighs the sadness I would think...?
I had three guinea pigs at one point. Sad day when they died.

Condolences to you and the wife, bbor. It's always hard losing a family pet. I had a dog for 15 years. Got her when I was 5 and she was around until I was in college. I was crushed when we put her to sleep. That was over 10 years ago now and I still get sad thinking about it.
I think buying a new pet pretty early on is the way to go. We bought a dog from the pound two weeks after my dog died. It worked out incredibly. The new dog, Sergei (yes, named after you think he's named after), is great, if a little spoiled.

I had a guinea pig named Venus once. It was really annoying. I can't remember what the hell happened to it. I figured I would only have pets that didn't squeal 24/7. Sorry for your loss, though.

It's interesting, my new landlord actually stopped owning pets because she became too depressed when they died. She does a ton of volunteer work with the local animal shelter, but refuses to actually own any pets.

I had guinea pig named Badger. I forgot what happened to him. My fondest memory of the little fella was when he fell asleep on my chest when I was watching a Lions game on Thanksgiving. The Lions can beat by the Chicago Bears. The game went into OT and the Bears returned the OT opening kick-off for a touchdown.
The new dog, Sergei (yes, named after you think he's named after), is great, if a little spoiled.

I had to put one of our dogs down last weekend. It had only been "my" dog for three years, but my wife had it for 15. She (the dog, not my wife) was old, starving, wouldn't eat, couldn't walk, couldn't do anything but defacate on herself at the end. Not good times.
We're at this point with our female great dane, its pretty depressing and the husband is quite depressed over it. Horrible decision to make, everytime we're with her she's all almost happy acting and wont eat nothing but REAL food now..but refusing to get up, so i dont think there's much we can do, but it seems and not that i think it SHOULD be easier but it just seems it would be easier if she was always BLAH acting so I could justify putting her down more. This will be the third girl we'll be losing since we've been married its unfortunate this breed doesnt have longer life spans:(

My condolences. It really is tough to lose a pet. I lost a parrot once, and that was brutal. I had hand fed him since he was two weeks old, and he essentially died because I forgot to close a window before leaving town. It got cold and windy, and he just didn't make it. Well in any case.
Sorry to hear of your loss. Don't dwell on it long, and have fun with felix. He deserves it, and so do you.

I recently had a scare with my 19 year old cat. Keep in mind he is never outside alone, ever. He's an indoor cat. One night he snuck out somehow, and we didnt know. Wake up the next morning and he isnt anywhere to be found. We search the house, our neighborhood for over 5 hours. It's about 4:00 in the afternoon and we decide to take a little break. He's been outside alone since around 10:00 the previous night. We eventually find him hiding under a neighbor's patio at around 6PM. 19 years old, deaf, never been outside for longer than 10 minutes and he somehow stayed alive and we got him back. I'll miss him a lot when he's gone.

My cats both weigh 15-20 pounds and are 13 or 14 years old. I don't want them to pass, it will be the saddest of times. I love my cats.

Sorry for your loss, it always sucks when pets die. I have 2 cats too shorty, one is like 15-17 pounds and he's lived the longest of all my pets, he's only he's only 10 or 11 years old though. It will be so sad when he's gone, he's one of my best friends.

Yeah, we've been blessed with long living cats. The first one died of cancer when he was 14, the other one's body just stopped working when he was 17, and this one thinks he is still a kitten.
