Any vets in the house....

This may sound like a stupid question but I just recently came down with a bad case of the flu. I did some searches but really didn't find anything. Is it possible that your dog can catch the cold or flu from his/her owner? I have a few dogs and don't want them to get sick.

Now if you had a pig, that would be a different story!

I don't know about pets getting colds from humans, but I am convinced that humans can get colds from pets. One of our cats (the nice one) had a cold and spent a lot of time in my lap and was sneezing alot...2 days later I got a cold even though no one else in the house had it. I know (even though radii disagrees) that I got the cold from the cat!

Yea, I have heard of that before.

Umm I don't know what the answer to the first question is, but IF one can get a cold or flu virus from a pet, the pet has to be able to get it from you. Either viruses affect both species or they don't. Now the chances of it transmitting in one direction may be greater than the other depending on the type of interactions you have with your pet. And lay off the sheep-love, that gave our species tons of STDs already.

as far as i understand, we cannot give or get colds from out pets. but then, im no doctor.

Extremely unlikely. Most viruses cannot infect multiple species; however, very rarely a virus can mutate and infect a new host species.

Possible, yes. Probable, no.

Have anyone here had a dog who had a cold before? Can dogs get "cold like" flus? And if so what are the symptoms? I ask because one of my dogs just appears tired...not overly but just a little. He still has a grand appetite and he isn't vomiting or anything like that..just looks like he may have a cold (he is upto date on all his shots too).

my cat had a bad cold. his nose was runny and he was constantly sneezing, so it was pretty obvious.

ive had dogs, but dont remember them ever getting a cold or flu, so im not entirely sure. one surefire way to know though is check the nose. if its warm and dry, he's sick (i *think*)

Hmm, I'll go ahead and do that. I'll also do some more searching on the net. I'm just concerned because if he is sick for whatever reason I want to take him in to the vet. Then again, Im sick and this fever might be making me see things that just aren't there....lol

We had a dog that we thought was choking on something (bone?) in its throat. Vet told us he just had a cold, and that's what they sound like when they cough. It's far more of a hacking sound than we often get. We're pretty sure that the family had the same cold at the same time, although it may have been coincidence.
