View Full Version : OT: Cities/Fans That'll Go Nuts For a Title?

I think that the obvious choice is Chicago if the Cubbies win a series, so for MLB I can't see anyone overtaking them.

But in any other sport, of all the teams, two come to mind. One, my beloved Detroit Lions, who've been held without a title over 50 years. Detroit Lions fans are some of the most loyal in football, just ask Ice, BigJon, HB, Schmidty, Gold, etc. I think if Detroit wins a Superbowl it'll be an unreal atmosphere here in Detroit.

The other one are the Texas Longhorns. Now I am not a Texas fan by any stretch, but a NC win for them would be huge. I know that IMTG will probably have a stroke if they do win, especially with Mack Brown at the helm.

Those are just a couple I was thinking of, whatabout you guys?

Don't forget the White Sox. The Cubs get the press love, but let's not forget that the Sox haven't sniffed the World Series since '59, and haven't won it since before the 1919 Black Sox scandal. Chicago's a doubly damned city when it comes to baseball.

That said, I think the San Francisco Giants, Toronto Maple Leafs, and St. Louis Blues are a few other teams in addition to the ones you listed, that would likely be properly appreciative.

I agree. The Lions have had almost 50 years of crap to mediocare teams. There was the Barry Era, but that's pretty much been it and it all resulted in all of one play-off win and coincided with the Scot Mitchell and Wayne Fontes eras. You have all that and the Lions still manage to sell out every game. Even back when they had to fill 80,000+ seats in the Silverdome they were selling out more often than not. The fan base is strong and fanatic. There are a couple of Detroit Lions fansites/bulletin boards that are hopping all year around. If the Lions had a whiff of the success the Wings have had, that whole "Hockeytown" nonsense would be long forgotten. Detroit is a football town above all things. It would be amazing.

Pittsburgh. The Steelers have been so close so many times in the past ten years or so. Being that close makes it harder than being out of it every year before the season starts (see the Pirates).

I reckon they have to exist, but I don't think I've ever met a White Sox fan...

Maple Leafs... Wow. That would be big. I mean, we hear enough around here about series winning goals and all those cute little things. Imagine if they actually won a Cup? I could see entire threads written by Maple Leafs, bbor, JohnnyG, et al. simply recounting each and every game in play-by-play fashion.

Yes, Austin will go crazy the next time the Longhorns win a FB national championship. But its not like they've had a title drought. UT regularly wins championships in the other sports, namely baseball. We're always in the running for the Sears Presidents Trophy, for the overall outstanding athletic program. It's just that Stanford has dominated that competition over the past decade.

Athens, GA (and a large portion of the rest of the state) if UGA wins another football national championship.

It ain't gonna happen, but if it did .... sheesh. It took over 20 years for them to become remotely bearable after the last one.

I think Boston will go completely nuts if the Patriots do the impossible and bring us what fans never expected. A world championship to the long-suffering fans of the greater New England area.

(Hopefully you guys realize that was more tounge in cheek then a Lesbian orgy...)

I think the Giants would really go crazy- we're not the world's biggest fanbase, but the diehards are a lot more. And we frigging hate the Cubs and their whiny ass shit.

I don't mean this as any sort of slight against Detroit or its fans... but do any non-Lions fans share this feeling?

I dunno... if we did a poll here about "what NFL teams have the most loyal fans?" and just asked the general membership who comes to mind... would Detroit be at the top? Near the top? On the list at all?

For me, I think I'd probably have thought of the Packers... the Steelers... maybe the Cowboys (though I might be confusing numbers with devotion there)... the Raiders... maybe even the Chiefs or Bears. I have no idea how far down the list I'd have to go before thinking of the Lions.

Just an observation. I have no particularly valuable perspective on the Lions or their fans... that statement (quoted above) just struck me as unusual.

More generally, is there any team in North America whose fans don't believe that they're among the most loyal and/or best in all of sports?

I live in Ottawa. The only major pro team here is the Senators, who rarely sell out home games, get their loudest cheers for the gun that shoots free t-shirts, went backrupt in part due to poor fan support, and regularly see the Leafs get a louder reaction than they do during home playoff games. And the fans here will still claim to be among the best in the NHL. And they're not aiming for irony, they really mean it. They think they're right there at the top of the list.

Has anyone ever heard a fan of any team say "Well, to be honest as far as passion and loyaly go we're pretty below average"? Are there Arizona Cardinal fans out there who think they're among the top half dozen NFL fan-bases? Is it the equivalent of how everyone on the planet thinks they're an above average driver?

I need to know these things.

I'd say LA would explode if the Dodgers won the WS. The Laker fans rioted when they won their first title and most of the Dodger fans are Laker fans with more tattoo's.

I was going to make that exact reference, but wanted to avoid sounding like I was bashing people from Detroit. I grew up in Ohio, and I constantly do bash people from Detroit, so I tend to be a bit wary about it. But yeah, that's the same page I'm on here, now that you put it plainly.

But they would have to win it by the fifth inning, otherwise those diehard fans would be in their cars, on their way home.

New Orleans - Imagine what the city would be like if Mardi Gras was on the Tuesday following the Superbowl (as it is this year).

And on the other issue, I think the Saints have a pretty devoted, but small, fan base. Even when the team stunk (stinks), the fans were (are) in the stands albeit with bags over their heads. But of course, I am extremely biased.

I can't believe there are too many Atlanta Braves fans who are also baseball fans in general who believe they're among the elite fan groups in the U.S.
Or Hawks fans. Or Georgia Tech fans.

With the exception of UGA football (which I'm not a fan of), I don't think you'll find many people who know what they're talking about that would rank any of those groups among the best in their field, not even when you're a Braves fan, Tech fan, etc. yourself.

MLPS/Saint Paul for a Rose Bowl, Super Bowl, or Stanley Cup.

Any others would be big, but Hockey and Football would probably be the biggest.

For now I'll just settle for celebrating when Red finally sells the Vikings.

Philadelphia. Keep in mind, I may live in South Jersey, but I'm not a fan of any of the Philly teams. But they've gone a long time without a title in any major sport, let alone a single one. They've been cockteased so much the city is going to start glowing blue soon. All of the Philly teams seem to make a run at the championship from time to time. There's usually a damn good Philly team in at least one of the "big 4" at any given time, but no championships in decades. If they win any championship anytime soon, the city is going to party for weeks on end.

And it'll annoy the ehll out of me. :)

Me too. We should really take a poll on fans, if they all think their cities are the most loyal. Would anyone be against this?

As a Bills loyalist and a Buffalo boy, I can agree with this entirely. We can wait, though. Because we need to beat Dallas. Oh, yes, we can wait for that. Those bastards took two Super Bowls, but were they content? Nooooooooooooo. They had to take the bleedin' Stanley Cup, too. We'll get you for that, and your little dog too.

(As a consolation, I'll settle for the Clippers winning the NBA. They're an ex-Buffalo team, so it's acceptable. Of course, we've got a better shot at the Super Bowl happening first...)

Cleveland. The last time any team won anything there was the '64 Browns. Few people outside of Ohio realize just how nuts about the Browns that place is. I can't think of any place that would go as crazy as Cleveland if they won the Super Bowl.
