All is not well with Quincy Carter.

The quarterback's absence from the New York Jets at the end of the season indicates a setback in his drug rehabilitation and previously undisclosed diagnosis of bipolar disorder, sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

He has entered a treatment center to deal with both afflictions, the sources said. Carter previously entered treatment programs in January of 2003 in the Boston area and again in the summer of 2004 at the John Lucas Treatment Center in Houston, Mortensen reported.

The Dallas Cowboys released Carter on Aug. 4 amid reports he failed a drug test. Carter was already in the NFL substance abuse program for his first positive test.

A third positive test would bring a four-game suspension.

The NFL Players Association has filed for arbitration in the case, saying the Cowboys violated the collective bargaining agreement. A date for the non-injury grievance could be set this week.

Three weeks after his release by the Cowboys, Carter signed with the Jets. The week before their playoff game with the Steelers, the Jets announced that Carter had left the team to return to Georgia to be with his ailing mother.

Carter signed a one-year contract for $455,000 in base salary with the Jets. Carter's contract with the Cowboys included $455,000 in base salary in 2004 and a $260,000 roster bonus.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

This is pretty sad. Bi-polar disorder is just awful. I hope he can get well...

Never doubt Parcells. It's that simple.

Agreed. I can't imagine what he'd be like doing coke with bipolar. Hope things work out ok for him.

Yeah, burning that 2nd round pick on Carter was downright epic.

A former Cowpie with a drug problem... who would have guessed?

In a way, that wasn't such a bad move. Obviously, the draft is a lot of guesswork, and the Cowboys clearly missed on Carter. But, let's say they had hit on him. Taking him in the second round allowed his contract to be longer than it would have been if they had taken him later. That gave Dallas more time to see if he was a good quarterback, and it saved them money if he had been the real deal.

Once they found out he wasn't, of course, they cut him, which was a very smart move.

Yeah, it really is. I hope he can get better too, but one of the biggest problems with people that have bi-polar is if they will even accept help. Hopefully, he will.

In the words of a great man:

Manic depression is touching my soul
I know what I want but I just don’t know
How to, go about gettin’ it
Feeling sweet feeling,
Drops from my fingers, fingers
Manic depression is catchin’ my soul

Woman so weary, the sweet cause in vain
You make love, you break love
It’s all the same
When it’s, when it’s over, mama
Music, sweet music
I wish I could caress, caress, caress
Manic depression is a frustrating mess

Well, I think I’ll go turn myself off,
And go on down
All the way down
Really ain’t no use in me hanging around
In your kinda scene

Music, sweet music
I wish I could caress, caress, caress
Manic depression is a frustrating mess

I was no friend of Quincy but I've always rooted for him in his career. He lived in my apartment complex when I was at UGA and the ten or so times we talked he was always refreshingly humble, courteous and respectful. I NEVER saw the guy party, drink, or even talk about doing anything remotely crazy, and if you'll remember, he had money...not super money, but plenty of it before he played a down of college football. I never thought he would fall apart, but you just never know.

I genuinely believe he'll get through this, because I honestly thought of him as a good person at heart. And quite honestly, I've known a few people who have gone on to play athletics at a high level (college, professional) and he's one of two or three that I respect at all.
