Hey,
Have an old e-piece (e-machine) from about two years ago upon a re-boot hangs at the e-machine splash screen and just keeps beeping, over and over again. It checks the vid card, then the splash screen comes up that says "e-machines" and it starts beeping, the beeping doesn't stop until I shut it down. Is this the end for that machine? :(

Yes it is the end. Probably it is the end. It might be the end. Give it a day or 2.

I'm sorry man. But how are we to surmise if your comp is dead. It may be, it may not be. I hope it aint.

Ah, I figured that with the repeated beeping when it begins to boot and just hangs there. Figured the more computer savy among us might be able to surmise if it is dead, sorry I asked.

ignore the sarcasm and wit of suicane. i'm not sure if it's dead, but i'm sure someone will be able to make a more educated guess, probably come morning.

FOFC helped me out the other day with my PC problems, I have to at least offer suggestions. :)
The beeps are a pattern and the pattern is described in the machines manual (if that still exists). Look that up first.
It could be failing memory (you can try and re-seat all the memory sticks), it could be a dying CMOS battery, or maybe one of your peripherals is not seated in the PCI slot snug. It could be a number of things beyond that.
Your best best is to start off by resecuring all peripheral cards and power cables and RAM modules to make sure they are housed properly.
Good luck.

E-Machines are the modern Packard Bell.

You might want to put it to Sleep (mode)

E-Machines are the modern Packard Bell.
My first PC was a Packard Bell (25mhz processor with a 20MB HD and 1MB of RAM).
It was the worst $1600 I ever spent. :)

I had a packard bell as well.. cost me $1400.
LionsFan10 - memory is the first thing I would check. How many sticks of memory are in that beast? If there is more than 1 take them all out and start by putting one in..turn pc on... if it beeps take it out and try the other one, etc..

If it is just a constant beepbeepbeepbeepbeepbeep make sure you don't have a stuck key on your keyboard. Or if it's patterns, like the others have said, the emachines site should put you in the right direction as to what that beep code means.

The continuous beeping on bootup means that there is some sort of hardware issue that is keeping it from going any further. It could mean that you have a bad connection somewhere and your componenents and connections just need to be tightened or it could mean that a component is going bad.
I would start by re-seating all of your cards, video, sounds, etc. and make sure that all of the cables are tightly fastened.
If that doesn't work try taking them all out and putting them back in and booting one at a time to see if you can isolate the one where the conlict is occurring.
If that sounds like too much trouble you could drop some cash to take it to a servcice center or just buy a new PC.

My first 2 PCs were Packard Bells (bought by parents). When I was able to afford my own computer, I bought a Compaq.
Ever since I've just been building my own. :)

Isnt Emachines literally a direct decendant of Packard Bell via mergers and acquisitions?

One of my computers, A Talon 2.0 T-Bird 750 (purchased late in 2000) has this one problem that it has had over the past year: After it has been on for a short time it starts to get lines on the screen and then the screen will waver and then it goes out. This happens almost every time after it has been booted up for anywhere from 5 to 60 minutes. I have switched out monitors and the same problem occurs. I have reinstalled the video card.
My question is twofold: What is causing this? Is it a video problem or a motherboard problem? Could it be a memory problem (bad stick)?
Anyone have an experience like this?

Sounds like a cooling problem. Your system is overheating.

Answering this question accurately is the only chance you have of getting help on a message board.

Thanks. I was thinking that could be it also. This computer which I purchased form Falcon Northwest (they make gaming computers) has been the computer from Hell! Within three months of purchase the cd-rom went belly-up! They replaced it for free, but that was just the first of two cd-roms to die. The system came with ME which stinks and has been problematical as well. I have had this computer wiped and setup to many times too count. Last year the power supply just up and dies! So now it is jury rigged (taped into place) with a power supply from a friend of mine. Oh yeah and I have had to replace one fan already, probably this one is dead, though I'll check it tonight.
I have been thinking about getting a new case and power supply and then moving the motherboard and components over. Seeing as how this is my fourth computer (I also own a P-III-1000 and a P-III-550 along with my Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop on a wirless network), I have not wanted to spend much money on it. My 21 year old son who recently moved back in with me and my wife (his Stepmom) uses it but recently it has been almot unusable. I will try and keep it cool with a big fan until I get a new case for it. When it works it is a nice (older) computer. I have Win2000 on it now and 384mgs of Ram. It even has a scuzzi hard drive along with two other smallish drives.
I am very disappointed in Falcon NW and most likely will never purchase another computer from them  .
