Silly iPod question

Is it possible, or how can one download songs from someone else's itunes? I tried to download a friends last night and ended up replacing my music with theirs.

You have to turn off the auto-sync option first. iTunes' default is set to match up your iPod with the music in iTunes when you link up. If you disable that option, you can add songs at any time without fear of losing what's currently on your iPod.

Additionally, 'unprotected' iTunes songs (stuff ripped from your CDs) can definitely be transferred freely. Stuff from the iTunes music store can be played on 5 computers, although I'm not 100% sure whether you can transfer it to an unlimited # of iPods, or merely to a single iPod an unlimited number of times.

Yeah, to get around this, people I know burn the music to CD then rip it back to MP3.

There's programs out there that will just convert the m4p file to mp3, so you can avoid wasting the CDs.

I did it myself last night, because I want to use songs I paid for on my MP3 player (which is obviously not an iPod).

Here's another iPod question and I didn't want to start a new thread. My new iPod has been unable to import one track in each of the last four or five CDs I've put into my computer. The CDs aren't scratched but I get an "unknown error" and have to leave the track off the iPod. Any ideas?

Have you tried ripping the CD with another program?

samifan-Try importing them again. Sometimes it gets a read error and just behaves stupidly. I had this recently while importing some of my stuff. Just went through and re-imported the ones that had the "error" and all was fine.

As far as removing the DRM from iTunes Music Store songs, as already mentioned, one solution is to burn the songs to an audio CD and re-rip them to mp3/m4a (m4p is the DRM'd version of the song). I use Hymn, available here (http://www.hymn-project.org/).

I tried that but to no avail. I also tried restarting iTunes without any luck. :(

How odd. Well, then I'd do what someone else suggested--using a different program to make the mp3 and then import into iTunes (where you can convert to AAC/m4a if you like).

If you're a WinDoze user, you can try to import the songs (in WMA format) with Windows Media Player. Then, open the song with iTunes and it will tell you it needs to convert it first, which it will do to mp3 or m4a, whichever way you have your preferences set..

As I stated earlier, I just purchased a new iPod 20 GB this month. The listed battery life is 15 hours but that depends on how you used the iPod (if you're constantly switching songs) and on how you use the battery (not letting the battery run down before charging again). The rep I bought my iPod from told me he's heard that 12-13 hours is more the norm.

There are a few options that I can think of.

1) My receiver (and amplifier) has external audio inputs, so I can listen to "auxillary" stuff. So the first option is to sit your iPod in a dock (you can do it on its own, but it works better with the dock), and get a Y-line that converts from headphone out to L and R audio channels, thus you can connect the output of the iPod to the auxillary input of the receiver.

2) Ditto previous, but if you only have one auxillary input line, you can hook it into your TV and (assuming you have your TV configured to go out through the receiver) listen to it through one of the video input channels (obviously omitting the video feed).

3) What may be most convenient is to get an FM transmitter. I have the iTrip, and I like it a lot, but there are great reviews out there for others, see ilounge.com for reviews of FM transmitters. With that, you place the iPod+transmitter close to your receiver antenna and tune the receiver to the proper channel to hear it, and then just jam out. This is what I do in my car, since I don't have a casette adapter nor an auxillary input line.

I really hope that makes sense, I'm feeling really sick and really tired right now.
