I'm sure there are applications out there for doing fantasy baseball. Maybe it's time to start looking that up unless Yahoo ponies up the cash *and* keeps a free game.

So which site will run the free fantasy baseball that lets me draft "San Francisco LF #25" and "Boston RHSP #38"?

Baseball is trying to control the use of stats in fantasy games as well names/logos. Some site im sure will use names like that but they will open themselves to a lawsuit(right or wrong).

Some site im sure will use names like that but they will open themselves to a lawsuit(right or wrong). That lawsuit would get bitch-slapped in court. I think it was the NFL that already tried to do that to prevent Motorola (? again) from offering a service where they broadcast score updates to your pager while the game was in progress. The NFL cared because it was a fee-based service and not free like website scoreboards.
Court held that such real-time information is not copyrighted. Basically that making such information illegal would be ridiculous because then any fan that called out from the game on their cell phone would be breaking the law if they mentioned the score.
Trying to get that protection for statistics, especially reporting them after-the-fact and compiled, seems impossible. Newspapers have been printing them for years and charging customers for the printed version.
This is completely off the top of my head memory, could be wrong. But it makes sense.

I missed the original thread on this but conceptually I doesn't seem to make sense for baseball to limit access to their sport in this way.

I agree MLB would not win the lawsuit but it would be expensive to challenge. A small company could not realistically afford to do this. Something has to happen in the next few weeks though.

I find not caring at all about baseball, especially fantasy baseball, makes the whole situation easier. :)

I would estimate that without fantasy baseball i will watch about 90% baseball this year. Huzzah to the MLB.

The front page of Yahoo Fantasy Sports says they're going to have a free game and that registration starts Friday.
