I am purchasing a new car within a month or so. I live in PA and the sales tax is 6%. Can I drive to Delaware which has no sales tax, purchase a car and register it in PA with little or no problem? I know I have to pay the "use tax" ;) but is that all thats required?

I think you get hit with the tax somehow.

They will get you when you transfer the title to PA.

I bought a new car in August 1997 in Illinois and moved to Philly in February 1998 and they found me for a "prorated" portion of the sales tax.

When I purchased my car in Cali and moved to Florida the tag office took the local sales tax percentage and subtracted the percentage I paid in Cali. Since it was a negative number I didn't pay anything extra. If Florida were higher I would have had to pay the difference.
Probably the same in PA. You should check it out before getting hit with a thousand dollar registration bill.

I thought about calling a Delaware car dealer. Not sure it is in their best interest to help me though. If I am going to have to pay roughly the same amount of money no matter what, there would be no reason for me to go to Delaware. So I could see the dealer not being totally up front about things.

At least you can deduct the sales tax next year.
