From KFFL

"According to the Associated Press, St. Louis Rams head coach Mike Martz has announced that RB Marshall Faulk will no longer start for the team, and will instead be used as a change-of-pace back during the 2005 season."

That was pretty inevitable. The end is near.

what a shame. one of the greatest fantasy football players of all time. ever since i've been a fan i don't think i've seen anyone who was a threat to score from anywhere on the field. what a player.

he should be traded. he's got 2 solid years left in him, then i'd say he's backup/change of pacve material. he should go to the Dolphins, 49ers, Raiders or maybe even the Bucs.

I really don't think so. He can no longer take the punishment of being an every down back. If you watched him last year, he was a shell of himself.

He has no where near the speed he once had. Jackson was clearly the better player out there.

As one who goes to every home game, I agree 100%. He will be the best 3rd down back out there. :)

Any RB on STL is going to be a change of pace back...the normal pace being throwing the ball 75% of the time. Martz completely wasted Faulk for the past two seasons, so I'd be willing to guess he has some gas left in the tank. I know quite a few teams that could use an RB.

You didn't watch thme play much then or you didn't watch very closely if you did. I am not going to disagree that Martz threw the ball too much, but it was pretty obvious when Faulk ran the ball that he didn't have it anymore.

Aside from being several steps slower than he was he is very hesitant to hit the hole now. He dances around at the line of scrimmage and just looks to be playing scared. Jackson and Faulk were in the exact same offense and it was very obvious Jackson was the superior back. Faulk just isn't the same guy anymore.

Do any of the avid Ram fans (Mizzourah and all) think Faulk could be productive as a receiver here in his latter years?

It seemed to me that he was just as dangerous a receiver as a runner a few years ago.

No. No speed.

Maybe a 5th receiver. I don't think he's done, just run Jackson more than Faulk.

It seems like he spent of lot of last season playing to not get hurt also. As someone who very foolishly picked Faulk in the 2nd round of a fantasy draft (and finished in last) I saw him in person or on TV for every game and he is not the Marshall Paulk of old.

Here's a good question: Did the Colts end up on the better end of the deal taking Edgerrin James and letting Marshall Faulk go?

I see this in two ways: production and salary cap.

Production-wise, I'd take Faulk. Salary cap, though, I'm unsure.

I dunno. That's a toss-up. I think perhaps Faulk would have been more complimentary to Peyton Manning's offense, but, who knows?

Faulk, two Super Bowls with the Rams (1 ring). James = 0 rings.

I'd say no. Imo, Faulk in his prime is clearly the better running back.

How can a decision like this be made now? Shouldn't the starter be whoever is the better back come the end of the preseason?

My guess is Martz is trying to give Faulk plenty of time to decide if he wants to retire or not.

That and put a stop to those, "Who's the starter next year?" "Who's the starter this season?" "Who's starting x game?" questions.

The Colts did worse. Was this a straight up trade of Faulk for a draft pick (which turned into Edge?)

I think this is the best situation for Faulk. it will extend his career by maybe a couple of years.

Faulk went for a pair of picks. It was either a 3rd and a fifth or a second and a fourth. I can't recall exactly.

The Rams made out like bandits. James was something like the fifth overall pick. The Colts could have gotten a different impact player, maybe a defender there.

yeah man, i was in a league with Faulk for 10 years and each time he wiped the floor with us. he always knew who to trade for, and who to pick up off the waiver wire. that Faulk. a great fantasty football player.

i guess he was ok at the real thing too.

Looking at the Draft order, the Colts could have drafted Champ Bailey or Chris Claiborne perhaps at #4, but any of the other defensive players would look to be a pretty large reach at that time.

James before the multiple Knee surgeries looked to be an elite back compared to the one that he is now.

Thank goodness the Bears traded down to get Cade McNown. Otherwise they would have been forced to take Champ Bailey!!

They could have gotten New Orleans entire draft that year. They then could have picked up a boatload of players.

Wow. Three of the top five picks from that year are effectively out of football. (I don't know if Couch or Smith is technically on a roster as a 4th stringer somewhere).

I heard Smith was going to NFL-E this year to try to regain a career.
