Five words, five letters each, five bad days.

Below are five words. You’ve been given the starting letter B, as well as one other letter in the word. The remaining letters have been replaced using a simple cipher.

B1a23
B4a35
Bu623
B4a78
B90b3

Each word is a clue to identify a bad day in American history.

These events occurred on different days of the month, in different months of the year, and in different years. They are listed in chronological order. As a clue, the gap in years between these events starts large and becomes progressively smaller.

The dates for each event have been replaced with a simple cipher as well, and are listed in the same order as the word clues above:

ABCDDE
FCBCGHG
CEFHCHFH
BICHAD
CFDCHJC

What are the five events?

I've tried every combination of these five events, and haven't been able to log into WSUCougar.

The day would not happen to be July 17th 1944. The Port Chicago disaster.

Damn, I had the dates and events cracked as well. I wanted to be first. I think I have 4 of the 5 clues, but how do I white them out for spoilers?

Ah, found the white out. Here are the four I got.

Beans
Blast
Burns
Bla78
Bombs

I'm not positive about number 3.

Beans for bean town of Boston
Blast for the blast the sunk the Maine
Burns for our friend Montgemory Burns that lived through the depression. (I think :) )
Blaze for the inferno of the Hindenburg
Bombs for the attack on Pearl Harbour.

Looks like this has all been solved before I got to post :)

My guesses which have already been published by other brighter posters.
