Nobody knows yet. Doesn't sound like he's going to play again but good that's he's ok though.

Bruschi hospitalized, will undergo additional tests

BOSTON -- New England Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi was admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston on Wednesday after complaining of headaches.

WBZ-TV in Boston reported Wednesday that Bruschi had stroke-like symptoms, partial paralysis and blurred vision. A source told The Boston Herald for Thursday's editions that Bruschi lost partial vision in one eye, but the sight was returning. And a Patriots official told the Herald that Bruschi was up "walking and talking."

Bruschi, 31, spent the night at the hospital and more tests were scheduled for Thursday morning, team spokesman Stacey James said.

James would not confirm whether Bruschi had suffered a stroke. A Herald source said it was a stroke that appeared minor because Bruschi is being treated in Mass General's exclusive Phillips House rather than in a critical care unit.

"He is in good condition and will be held for further evaluations," the team said in a statement. "The Bruschi family appreciates everyone's concern, but requests that you respect their privacy at this time."

A spokeswoman for Massachusetts General Hospital would neither confirm nor deny Bruschi had been admitted and referred all questions to the Patriots.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who was attending the men's college basketball game between Boston College and Rutgers on Wednesday night, declined comment. Sources told the Herald that Kraft visited Bruschi at the hospital.

Bruschi, a 6-foot-1, 247-pound nine-year NFL veteran, is a key member of New England's defense that has helped the team win three of the past four Super Bowls, including a 24-21 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Feb. 6.

Bruschi, selected in the third round of the 1996 draft out of Arizona, was second on the team in tackles during the regular season with 122, behind only safety Rodney Harrison with 138. He also had 3½ sacks and three interceptions during the regular season.

He had two fumble recoveries in the team's 20-3 divisional playoff win over the Indianapolis Colts, and an interception in the Super Bowl.

He has 753 tackles, 25 sacks and 11 interceptions in his career.

He also played in last weekend's Pro Bowl in Hawaii for the first time.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Not a stroke (which is indicative of a blood CLOT), apparently a blood vessel in his brain just plain BROKE.

Wow.

Tedy Bruschi will remain in Massachusetts General Hospital while he undergoes more tests after suffering a broken blood vessel in his head, a Patriots team source told the Globe.

Bruschi is "sitting up in bed'' and talking, the source said.

The Patriots' Pro Bowl linebacker was admitted to the hospital Wednesday after suffering from persistent headaches and partial paralysis. The paralysis is now gone.

A Patriots spokesman said Wednesday night that Bruschi was in "good condition.''

A stroke can involve either a clot or a burst vessel.

Yikes. A bleed in the brain is never a good thing - blood destroys brain tissue on contact. My heart goes out to him.

His ability to his recover will depend largely on the size and location of the bleed. If it occurred in the meninges and pooled enough to put pressure on the cortical motor areas (that were obviously affected), then he may make a full recovery after that pooled blood is drained (as no brain tissue would be destroyed). But if it occurred in the brain proper...well, let's just hope that's not the case.

This just proves my theory that having to listen to Freddie Mitchell, can in fact make your head explode. I certainly hope he recovers fully.

A stroke can be either ischemic (clot in a blood vessel) or hemorrhagic (a blood vessel breaks and starts bleeding in the brain.) This sounds like it was a small hemorrhagic stroke from what I've heard. I'll be praying and hoping for him to have a full recovery.

As far as his football career, it is hard to speculate without knowing the cause of this event.

Dola -

Unless this was an odd cause that can be treated, my guess would be that his career is going to be over.

If that were the cause, I would have thought Rodney Harrison would have died after the first media day.

I agree. I can't imagine any physician would clear him to go out and resume violently banging his head around, given that he's already suffered a bleed (mild though it might have been). That's asking for all kinds of trouble.

For Bruschi's sake I hope he never plays again.

I hope Bruschi's O.K. I was at U. of Arizona at the same time he was, and I met him on one occassion (this was the year that SI picked them to be #1 and had them on the cover). He's a good guy.

That said, I hope he retires. There's no sense in risking his health, and he's got a fistful of Super Bowl rings at this point. I'm sure he's got a career in broadcasting if he wants it - either locally, or maybe even nationally.

Dude, I hope you're a Pats hater or something...even then, there's no excuse to throwing salt on the wound....especially when somebody's life is in the balance. You just lost quite a few cool points with me. And that's hard to do.

I saw a couple of people upset with the remark in question, but I get the feeling I must have read it differently than some people.

I took it more as a "you better get all you can while you can, because you never know when the opportunity might be gone ... and here's an example of why some players take that approach" observation (which seems pretty valid IMO), rather than anything disrespectful or inappropriate. I don't know which, if iehter, he actually meant, but I think there must be more than one way to read the remark.

As a Pats fan, this news has hit me pretty hard. As I said before in this thread, I read about this around lunch time, kind of not believing at first, not wanting to believe that this dude, whom I just like to see on the field, whom I follow on a weekly basis, could be in the hospital... 31 is pretty young to suffer a stroke. Heck, I'm 34! My thoughts go to him...

How very sad:

USA TODAY

Bruschi in good condition after suffering mild stroke
BOSTON (AP) — New England Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi suffered a mild stroke but is walking, talking and in good spirits, the team said Thursday. Bruschi experienced temporary numbness, blurred vision and headaches Wednesday night and was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital.

"It has been determined that these symptoms were the results of a mild stroke," team spokesman Stacey James said. "Tedy is in good condition and, as always, his spirits are high. He is walking and talking normally and stressed that he would like to thank everyone for keeping him and his family in their thoughts and prayers."

The Patriots said Bruschi could be released as early as Friday.

"The outpouring of support has been overwhelming and the Bruschi family is very appreciative," James said.

A nine-year NFL veteran out of Arizona, Bruschi is the centerpiece of the Patriots defense that helped the team win three of the past four Super Bowls, including a 24-21 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Feb. 6.

On Sunday, Bruschi played in his first Pro Bowl.

Bruschi, 31, was selected as the AFC's Defensive Player of the Week three times, including the first-round playoff victory over the Indianapolis Colts. A second team Associated Press All-Pro selection, he ranked second on the team with 128 tackles and tied for second with three interceptions.

He had two fumble recoveries in the team's 20-3 playoff win over the Indianapolis Colts, and an interception in the Super Bowl.

I hope he comes out ok. I would feel very sad for his family if anything happened to him. Seems like a very loyal and geniue father and person.

Mass General is an excellent health care facility (I would say hospital, which it is, but that place is huge), so I'm glad he is in good hands.
I don't get what this means, "A Herald source said it was a stroke that appeared minor because Bruschi is being treated in Mass General's exclusive Phillips House rather than in a critical care unit."

I thought you went to ASU?

I did. For two years. Pops thought I needed a change of scenery after four semesters of really crap grades, and had me move down there to give pre-law a try. I was there a year.

I hated every minute of my life in Tucson, and I was never happier than the day I left for good.

I'd assume it means that the doctors don't, or didn't if he's been released now, consider it a life or death.
