I've posted before about an online game I developed, but I thought I'd pimp it again since a new version is starting this weekend - Music Maven 3. The game is basically an online Music Industry simulation game. Music Maven 2 was very successful and was around for about 2 years, with thousands of bands playing. It has taken me 18 months to complete MM3 so I'm very excited about finally being able to launch the game. (It took so long not because of the huge enhancements - but mostly because I took several hiatuses along the way.) As always, I strive to make the game as realistic as possible - for example, it contains hundreds of real music clubs around the world in which your band can play.

Music Maven 3 (http://www.music-maven.com/mm3/)

For those that enjoyed version 2, here's a partial list of the new features for MM3:

New feautres in version 3

-Completely customizable band lineups with up to 6 musicians (no longer just guitar/bass/drums/vocals)
-Many enhancements to record labels, including record label contracts
-Maven Mall: Can now purchase instruments & stage effects
-More Record Studios added
-Core ratings of record studios now hidden
-Core ratings of practice spaces now hidden
-Interactive map to locate venues by country
-Added genre-level awards
-Musician photos
-Musician bios
-Streamlined method of scheduling Resting activities
-Added ability to upload images for band photo
-Musicians ages are now more varied
-Each song can now appear on a single AND an album
-Track order now saved for each recording
-Made it more difficult for lesser known bands to play large venues
-Label details page now displays bands on tour
-New cities added (can now tour Europe and Australia in addition to N.A.)
-New clubs added
-More ways you can promote your band
-Set list now shows which album and/or single your songs appear on
-Added new rating for band: Stage Presence

The first sim is Sunday night, so I encourage you to sign up now to not miss any sims.

I know I had quite a lot of fun playing and anyone who didn't give it a go and likes text based web games check it out.

to lighthousekeeper:
I had one problem that probably caused me to stop playing and was wondering if you had addressed that. After a couple of months of playing, you had maxed out your musician abilities through practicing (the musical ones). However, the other attributes could only be changed in unbalanced fashion by resting (ie the max you could get from one ability would be 3 so that attribute on all your musicians would always be low while another you could raise 7 or 10 points in a day and so it was better to raise those). So, once your band became more "mature" in the game, the easiest way to advance your band was to go audition a new set of members because the points would be redistributed and it's much easier to raise the musical abilities because you practiced every day. So, basically, the best way to get the best band members was to completely replace all of your members and that reduced the "stickiness" of the game for me.

I'm not sure how long ago you stopped playing but at one point in MM2 I added many types of resting activities that allowed the musicians to raise a variety of attributes. But, I will definitely take a look at the balancing of resting activities to improve and addresss unbalance issues to try to make it more balanced (either have less improvement each month, or introduce more factors to reduce certain attributes).

It'd be cool if we had like a buddies system, like add group to a certain list to keep tabs on people we know.

In a way there is a buddies system in the form of Record Labels. Groups of friends typically create and join the same record label. (You won't be able to create a record label though until you've played the game for several days because you need at least at 20 rating in Popularity to create a record label.)

I started off making a solo game, but never finished - now the technology is outdated (VB6). link (http://www.sigmamusic.com/sigmastudios/mmpc.htm)

I would need to start from scratch and I've been telling myself that after I get MM3 up and running and stable that I'd go back to that.

For now, I'll just offer the max 5 album/5 single contract to all of you with a whopping $0 help from the label ;)

EDIT: I've offered 5/5/0 to about half but I was thinking that there might be a down side to being tied down so long so the rest of you will be 1/2/0 since that will keep you on the label a long time (gotta get 8 songs) and it'll give us more time to check out labels. If you got a 5/5/0 and are worried about that, just reject the contract and try to join again.

Is that allowed? I know I had a second band in MM2. That said, I think we should probably hold off on extra bands for a while and give people a chance to get their first bands in. Maybe we can look at this after a week or so.

I hope so, I read in the MM forum where a guy said he had 4-5 bands and I never saw a posting that I couldn't, guess I'll find out...

Yeah, I was wondering that after the label gets 20% of the profit, will we get backed pretty nicely next time we sign? Because I would think the label will have a ton of mony by then.

We better because The Man is giving us a pretty good screw job right now. ;)

Yeah, it would be wise to do that. Maybe we could create another label that pertains to a specific genre.

i guess i should say, are those editable where you choose those certain aspects while creating it?
You get to choose three things:
Number of singles
Number of albums
Cash from label to help promote

Right now, we've got a bunch of bands starting out so I think it would be foolish for us to pool our money and then redistribute it in some way. So, I figure we give $0 from the label. Maybe at some point that will change, but we don't have the resources to start doing that for quite a while.

Wait? The label gets that kind of cash from stuff? Then I'll try to just churn that back out to the people in the label. Any suggestion on how to do that?

I think we'll have to wait and renegotiate. At least I assume that the label gets 20% since the contract said we keep 80% of the profits.

Ummm, I didn't decline the first one because they gave me money. :D I've got a 1-single deal with Apathy Alliance where they've fronted me $300 to make a single. Once I take their money, then I'll go for FOFC. By the way, FOFC has 17 members. I think the next largest label has 5.

Well, if there's someone popular enough, I think it might be time for them to start a new label. FOFC has 17 members and I've offered 3 contracts to the three first bands to apply (Canadian Myth, Jive Turkeys, Incapable). If they don't accept, I'll keep going down the list of people who applied in chronological order but I guess we're hugely popular and have run out of room (Murders in Mega City and Rising Hayabusa top the waiting list).

Hm... I wonder if FOFC Live! and whatever the other label is will have to compete for bands. Probably should keep it friendly, tho. The other thing is anyone can go between labels so maybe we can just share bands depending on who has openings and who wants in.

I got a message from "your bass player" complaining about my practice area (I've chosen my garage). The problem is I don't have a bass player since I'm a West Coast Rap group. Is this a bug, in that I should not be getting a message from a guy I don't have in my group or a bug which in one of my guys is complaining and the game is incorrectly calling him the bass player?

Following two weeks of solid sell outs of all the copies produced they will be pressing another two thousand copies due to popular demand. This will be the final production of the number one single "Zero To Sixty."

Edit -- I scheduled the single to be released before I was offered a position at FOFC Live!, though both occured the same game month. So sadly our sales haven't registered with the label and are doing nothing to boost FOFC Live!'s reputation and position.

That's ok, tho. People need all the money they can get early on so that's no tragedy. Congrats on the release :D

I don't think I've flat out rejected any bands but since I'm trying to limit it to FOFC, I'll only give out offers to bands that I've seen people post here about or someone has sent me a Maven Mail of who they are.

That said, we still have 19 bands and there are now offers out to everyone who I know is a FOFC band (The Truth, Jive Turkeys, Insane Dripping, Rising Hayabusa).

Also, The Clap, Twilight, and Gorettos have all applied but I don't know who they are so they have not been offered a contract so if it's anyone here, I'll extend one if the spot doesn't get filled.

With the lack of documentation I would love to figure out what all of the different kinds of rest do. Here's what I've gleaned:

General Rest -- Health and happiness
Catch up on sleep -- Health
Play music maven -- Happiness
PBS -- Songwriting
Weights -- Looks

I'm also guessing about the following but don't know for sure:
Read a book -- Intellegence
Fliers -- popularity

Anyone know any others?

Your band did not have enough money to pay for all the time they wanted to practice. Until your band scrapes together more money, they will not be allowed to practice here.

I started documenting these and then I shut down my old computer and backed everything up. I'll look up that file once I've got it back up.

Fascist Eagle raked in some really good dough this month. Got about $150K on tour so now it's time to hit some hardcore practicing so we can release some stuff.

Actually, no clue. According to the "Manage Label" menu:

Free to spend: $6

And that's what's left of the $21 I put in there originally.

How do I do re-presses of a single?

Had no idea how it'd go so I only put out 100 copies of my single, trying to figure out how to mass produce the suckers now.

Happy though, finally started raking in some cash, made about 6.5k this last month.

EDIT: Cancel that, found it..don't know how I missed it the first look through.

Looking at the earnings of my single, it appears that each single brings in $2, but that the label doesn't get any money until the band's cost is covered.

Last month I sold out my intial pressing of 3000 copies, I have 4 fields for earnings:
Label Cost - $0
Band Cost - $6100
Label Gross - $0
Band Gross - $6000

So this month, the label should start seeing some income as mine and the other singles start to cover the band cost.

Go to "Band Details"
Go down to your "Band Discography"
Then click on your single, and you'll be able to order on the next screen.

As for the second question, I don't have a clue.

I'm thinking your stuck with that label until you apply to another. Which kinda sucks because then you can't do independent releases.

If it lets you, you could create your own label and then transfer whatever funds back to your band.

So, whenever you guys reup with FOFC Live! just tell me what you guys have in your "Label Gross" columns. I'll double check the math (since I can't see who sends the cash to the label) and send it in your new contract.

Don't you also have an option when you offer a contract that states how much money you'll spend on promotion? Maybe instead of just funnelling it all back to us, we can pool our funds and have the label spend on promotion? Just a thought.

Well, it would have been a cool idea.

If all you can do with the money is help out with the production costs, the whole contract is just plain silly. The band has to pay back all production costs to the label before it sees any profits, of which the band will only keep 80%. So all the label is really doing is fronting the band the money.

From what I can tell, the purpose of labels is to see which label can make the most money and to help fledgling bands get a single out. However, it has been shown that with a little touring, an independant release isn't hard to acheive. If that's the case, I'm not going to keep track of how much I've paid to the label, you can just keep it and use it either for prestige or for new bands.

I think I just don't get this part of the game.

Mainly my post was to see if I was the only one who saw things that way.
Not at all. And I would say one problem is that a lot of the regular players don't seem too interested in seeing the game become more realistic (based upon what i've read and written in the forums over htere).

I like seeing a Russian name for the band leader. Makes me think I created a mafia member who is running things ;)

As for money to the band, it's not much but it's a start :D

<table align="center" border="0" cellpadding="2" width="600"> <tbody><tr><td class="tabSubHead" width="210">Record Label Name:</td> <td class="tabCells" width="376"> FOFC Live! </td> </tr> <tr> <td class="tabSubHead" width="210">Funds:</td> <td class="tabCells" width="376"> Free to spend: $57
Tied up in record contracts: $14
Transfer Funds (http://www.music-maven.com/mm3/label_transfer_funds.php)</td></tr></tbody> </table>

I wish there was a way for label leaders to see which albums brought in which funds.

Wonder if it takes a month to filter in or something (ie this is from last month).

My label got money as soon as the first band released a single last month, we went to $500, now with two more releases we're at $1,500. Seems something is screwy. Who's our accountant anyways?:D

Are we sure that playing Music Maven gives happiness?

I just did 11 days of that and I lost happiness.

Not sure, personally. Did you abuse them in practice? I did this past month and my bands went from 95-100 to 75-80. But if you did 11 days of rest, that leaves a lot less days of practice than I did to them.

I used a 7 on that laid back to boot camp scale, maybe it was that.

Watery Hands have got another single dropping this month. We should be ready to drop a full length of entirely new material in 2-3 months.

Any of the guys running labels figured out how to resign your bands after they have fulfilled their contracts?

I've looked all over and can't seem to find it.

Crap, knew the Pasty White Thighs should've printed more than 2,600...damn it all!

Things are going well though, happy.
