The "nice guy victim" dude certainly did not deserve a beating, but who knows if he said something snotty to the lady. If he was a jackass, then I could see why the other patrons would keep their distance.

So you are saying, when the news guy says "and in comes her boyfriend, a 6 foot 4....." etc, you think they say ex-cop? I would figure the media would say ex-con to add to the effect that the guy is/was a felon. Why would the description of him matter when describing an ex-cop? Plus, neither guy looked that old or at least old enough to be an ex-cop.

Also as an ex-cop, you would think he wouldn't cause a scene like that, but an ex-con would be more likely to.

Maybe not jump in, but at least throw some trout from across the room at him. Those guys who were standing there were awfully close, and seemed like they were a bunch of deer in headlights. I would've at least moved out of the way.

I hope to god that the victim said something horrible that prompted the woman to go off, because if everybody else just stood there like that for no good reason then they are just as big of a tool as the ex-con (yep, it was CON). Nobody made a move. You don't have to take the guy on, just get behind him and grab him while yelling things like, "The dude's not worth it, man!" I agree, they could have taken him as a group.

In a bizarre way, the moral of the story really is to keep your mouth shut and not to get involved. The perpetrators are going to jail, but if the cell phone guy didn't make a backhanded comment when the lady cut him in line--he wouldn't have had to endure the physical and emotional trauma he went through and probably has to go through today.

Cell phone guy almost had Darwin work his magic on him, while the people who didn't get involved lived to see another day unscathed...
