View Full Version : Best computers for complete novices...

My mom's a senior and expressed an interest to get on the internet and learn to e-mail. She phoned me up telling me about one of my old computers so I thought that might have done the trick but it's ancient - Pentium II, 433MHz, Win 95, IE 3 and a 28.8 Modem!

She won't be (I doubt anyways...) playing games and just wants to browse and read Hollywood gossip. So what's a good starter system for someone completely foreign to computers? Is a notebook actually a better solution?

I was thinking maybe an eMac since it seems to be all-in-one and is the least expensive thing I've found so far.

I would say a desktop is a better choice for novices, and the emac is certainly a good option (mini macs are even cheaper, but I don't like them as much for a first computer for someone). is there someone in your family who has some experience with Apple who can kind of show her around a bit? it's a little bit different to operate than a Windows-based system - I know I'm lost whenever I touch one.

I've worked with Macs before so it shouldn't be too bad. Maybe I'll spring for an iPod while I'm at it...

if you've fooled around with macs before, then yes, eMac is a great choice for your mom.
