Just watching the news and seen that the Pope has been re admitted to the hospital from complications of the flu and SOB (Shortness of Breath).
He'll be going to surgery sometime tonight.

Vatican sources tell CNN that the Pope has undergone surgery and will release a statement shortly.

I've never really paid too much attention to the Pope, but with all his recent health problems, I wonder if maybe its time for him to retire. Is he still an effective Pope, or just basically a figurehead?

Man, there's a lot of ways to go with this.

I imagine we'll (sorry, I'm Catholic so I say "we") have a new Pontiff soon.

FOX and ABC are quoting the Vatican saying that the surgery was a success.

Hospital spokesman says Pope had "elective tracheomoty" and was a success. The pope will spend the night at his suite in the hosptial.
He took no questions.

If this guy wasn't the pope, he'd have been given up for dead by now.

Isn't he Pope for life? It isn't something that he can retire from, is it?

He can't be forced to quit or anything, from what I understand, but he can voluntarily step down.
He won't resign.

If you are that religious, and God calls you to that office, do you resign?

I think there's more to this than what The Vatican is telling us.

The main stream media has been writing his obituary for more then 10 years. Most recently our friends at the history channel on their website yesterday posted a tribute to the "recently deceased Pope".
The ironic thing is most of the men and women over the past years who have wrote such articles are dead themselves.
The Holy Father has much work left and to the disappointment of many Cardinals, Bishops and other modernists in and outside the Church, he is not going anywhere anytime soon. He has stated that he will not leave the Chair of St Peter until death takes him.
If anyone can pull through such adversity it will be the Papa.

It's still a job, right? If you can't effectively do the job, then you should step down. Maybe this is God's way of telling him its time to retire.

When I got over to my parents yesterday and learned what was happening, the first words out of my mouth were "HOLY CRAP!"...then I realized what I had said and cracked up :)

Almost certainly the Pope views his office as a charge from God, and one that it is God's responsibility to terminate, not his own.

Terminate how? By death? What if the man can no longer get out of bed? What if he can no longer speak? What if becomes senile and talks nothing but nonsense? At what point does the Pope (or his senior aids) say enough is enough - the man can no longer carry out his duties as the Pope?
