The Thrill of a Text Sim

I had another "YES!" moment with a text sim this morning.

You know what I mean. The moment when you are simming a game and in the midst of a tight, dramatic game something very good happens from your team and you pump your fist in exaltation or jump out of your chair and go "YES!"

I've had several over the years. Most memorable of all was in a TCY WSU dynasty, when my underdog Cougars were giving the 7th-ranked UW Huskies all they could handle in the Apple Cup, and in the waning moments of the game we scored to get the game in reach, then kicked off...only to have the Husky returner fumble the ball and a walk-on Wazzu player grab the ball and take it in for a TD (and the win).

This morning it was in FBCB. This is my first real dynasty, and I started with a rather pathetic (prestige 11) Coastal Carolina squad. This is year four, and we are gaining respectability after winning the conference last season. But we have been lit up pretty good early this year in our non-conference games. We're playing Dartmouth (big whoop, I know), but it's a physical back-and-forth struggle. I don't think the game went beyond 4 point leads either way. Dartmouth is up by 2 with 27 seconds to go when we get the ball and I call a timeout. I put my best shooters in, and set the offense to "run the clock" in hopes of getting the last shot.

I realize this happens all the time in text sims, but I got so excited for this one. 'Tis a cool hobby we have. :)

Mine always seem to go the other way. I had 3 of my punts blocked in my last office FOF2k4 MP League game, 1 for a TD, in a 14-10 loss.

I just nod my head and go, "ah yeaaaah". In contrast, I beat the living crap out of the only hat I wear (a Yankees one that I've had for almost six years now). It's pretty fricking scarred now. And no this doesn't mean I'm a Yankees fan. The hat was black and I've always liked the NY logo.

Yeah, I've chucked a few baseball caps across the room in frustration. Usually when the AI does something stupid, like throwing an interception when they should be running out the clock. :mad:

Yeah, I can relate to this with my high school dynasty. It's far more exciting than I figured, especially now that I'm not just writing box scores :)

I somehow don't have the patience to play FBCB in the coach mode. I think I'd like to, in order to more fully enjoy the game. I just don't feel like my input "matters" much beyond determining who is in the game at any given time. I think my teams probably perform better when I just quick sim the games.

You're missing a really fun part of the game. I like it a lot because i really feel it makes a difference what i tweak on the tactics etc. IMHO is one of the best games for that.

the 2D engine of FM2005 is just amazing to keep you on the edge of your seat... I mean, I've had fun with FOF in the past, lost of fun, but I don't watch/coach my games, simply sim them, week by week. The suspense isn't quite the same.

0-0 after regulation time, what would you expect, it's soccer!!! But then, all hell broke loose, they score in extra time, we scored back, and it happened again, now 2-2 after extra time and on to penalty kicks! :)

We ended up winning the playoff and promoting to the Championship, out of a 6th place finish, so barely in the playoffs :)

This is exactly how i feel. In FBCB your adjustments and decisions do affect the outcome more than any other sim i have but i just think i'm a terrible coach at times and just end up quick simming through the season.

I'm in a BBPro '98 league (how's that for old school?) and typically we just sim games weekly but in the playoffs, as a reward, the owners get to manage close games (2 runs in the 7th, 3 runs in the 8th or later). I do the "play-by-play" since I have one of the few Windows95 computers and we have some of the coolest, most dramatic moments (I just hope I convey them better).

Well, for FOF, even if you don't watch your games in-game, you can always use 3ric's viewer. It's a great utility and really makes you more immersed in the game; almost every single MP game I 've watched had one of those moments described by Coug...

Coug, believe it or not but I get the same thrill (in FBCB, of course) just by fast simming a week - like when I get a tough 3-game week and end up going 3-0 and to see the improvement in the standings, polls and RPI come Monday. It is then that I go to the box scores and see my team winning on fundamentals, knowing that will carry through into March.

Hey, atleast your not out chasing women. :)

I think FM 2005, you really get into it. The whole media aspects, the player personalities, and the differnet prizes your going after, and the team building, I think it can really be easy to get attach to players and teams.

The whole "football universe" that is built around your FM2005 career is simply awesome. I was honestly, seriously upset when I got sacked at Luton. It took me a couple months (game time) to start caring again about my new team, but now I would'nt go back...

I can't wait to get it. I'm sure this game is so much better then CM 03/04. It would be awesome to find a player via scouting, and land him. He would turn out to be a hard-working, loyal talent that you just would get crazy if he was successful, and be heartbroken if he did bad or gets hurt.

Now, with players speaking out, ect..I can't imagine it.

for me most recently i managed to get a great FA cup run with Barrow beating Fulham before getting knocked out 5-0 to Manchester United, but beating a premier league side in my first season with Barrow at their place was huge and getting the game at Old Trafford again was huge i think the club made more money in those 2 games then it did the entire rest of the season. Clinging to a 1-0 lead at Fulham with them dominating possession had me in fits every time they would launch a shot.

I think soccer may be the most "live or die" sport to watch. It doesn't stop play, so once a team gets a drive going, and launches or gets ready to that shot at goal, everyone holds their breath.
