With a little persistence, I (like to think I) helped Wright State get on www.thefacebook.com
It is as addicting as people from other schools (UC, BGSU) told me. I have been finding people for hours. Any current college student on it? If so, Facebook me!

Great...now you will spend all of your time that you used to do things that were fun browsing the facebook. Pretty soon you will only sub-conciously log in and spend half an hour on the website whenever you turn on your computer. You will tell yourself it is stupid, but continue to log in...happens to everyone.

It's basically one of these friend network things, like friendster.com. Thefacebook.com is only for college students, who can then look at other people with their interests, etc. It's basically an online stalking website when it comes down to it.

Just like college.
I'm on it. It was a big thing everybody talked about when we first got on it, but now its something that you happen to check every once in a while or when you get a random friend invite.
Still a great site. On a personal note, I started the "Fuck the Rutgers Business School" group, and its grown to something like 80 members. One of my finer collegiate accomplishments.

My school is on the College Facebook, but not the Facebook. I had no idea there was a difference, but apparently my school found a way to mess it up.

I didn't drink much in college or make/accept challeges to duel, so I don't have that many classic stories. My motto was - you're going to law school, so the fewer stories, the better.

My old school didn't have it. Then I got here and so I was on there because I know lots of random people that I've lost touch with or just haven't talked to in years. Easier than any of the other sites, because everyone is there.
It'd be better if you could have groups across schools, but then it'd be nuts. I think people like that it's generally private, compared to other sites where you can't really be anonymous if you choose to.
Then my old school got it, so it was like "more people". I dunno..it is addictive, but like most of these things, it'll run its course eventually.
Hopefully sooner than later :)

Buddy of mine wrote this-
Ahhh Facebook, the best way to flirt over the internet…kidding. You can see whose taking the same classes as you or who enjoys the movie Napoleon Dynamite. Maybe even meet up with the one person that likes Dave Matthews. Regardless, it’s the best way to keep in touch with the incoming freshman, you know?? Yeah..the kid that wants to add you because you went to the same high school. STOP DOING THAT!!! You were in 8th grade when I was a senior! Anyway, Facebook gives us something to do when we have nothing to do, and I’m not gonna lie, I check it all the time, along with 99% of the college population. But while you’re waiting to refresh your messages, you have a little extra time. Just fartin around, looking at everyone’s interests, favorite books, or even those silly quotes. “Live life for the moment and always follow the flower patch that leads us to the end of your heart, keeping us from ever losing touch with inner peace, spring break 05 was killer!” You know who you are! And last but not least, good ol’ pictures. It started out you could only post one picture of yourself, now it has evolved into a cheap tabloid you see at the Meijer checkout line. I mean it’s getting out of control. The other day I was walking my dog and I heard a ruffle in the bushes, didn’t think anything of it. Next thing you know there’s a picture “tagged” by Tom Roberts saying “Bryan stealing a dog” What the hell!?!?! Do I even know you? You better believe I’m coming to your econ 205 class to kick a little ass… What I’m getting at here is that maybe Facebook is making everyone a little more honest..or cautious. If you tell your girlfriend you’re gonna be at home studying all night, and then to her surprise she sees a picture of you playing beer pong…naked. Ohh and the girl next to you is too, there’s no way out! Thanks to Tammy “takes a lot” of fucking pictures, you’re in deep shit. With each day more photos start to surface and now Facebook isn’t that fun is it??
I know I know “pictures are memories that we’ll always have” But honestly do I really want to remember the time I passed out, pissed myself, and then someone duct taped me to the big red sculpture in the middle of campus? NO!! But thanks to Tammy its now tagged on my profile…..son of a.. This could get bad if it doesn’t settle down guys. Everyone will turn into perfect little angels at parties for the fear of being “tagged”. That means no more topless keg stands, white shirt water fights in the kitchen, strip beer pong, or even making out with a random person. It’s all gonna go down hill if we don’t do something about this!

I'm not saying this to try to sound like I have people flocking to be friends with me or that I'm too good for the practice, but out of all my friends on Facebook, I believe 4 were because of requests I've sent. One was my brother, one was a girl I grew up with but moved away, and two were girls I was trying to bang (failure on one, close on the other). Just a personal preference I guess.
Yeah I've never gotten a friend request from someone I didn't know. I don't send many out, either.

This screwed me over. Changed my relationship status, even thought I removed it from the newsfeed (by clicking the little 'x' - turns out that just removes it from my feed), came in to work on Monday and everyone is phoning me up asking me what happened.

I released my first Facebook app officially today (http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=21885440558). It's really just a rudimentary version of a game I co-created in the late 1990s online. Here's the description:
The National Government Simulation is a game where your voice counts! Add ideas to make the country -- or the world -- a better place. Have your friends vote on your ideas, propose new ones and more! The more people you add, the more people who vote on your ideas, the better your score.
It's intentionally simple to draw an audience. So check it out..if you want. Even if you don't want, add it anyway, the more active users, the better. ;)

Click on "add new idea" and then add it. Then people vote on said idea. But right now, we're working on a points problem that's making the scoring act all wonky. But ideally, you get points for adding it to your profile, for adding people and for voting on other ideas, as well as people voting on yours.
We'll continue to tweak it and improve it.

I added some FOFCers on facebook today. I went to the 'people you may know' page and added anyone whose screen name I was able to recognize. I think I saw Mrs. Leafs on that page too (I'm just guessing, since it was someone from Canada, and friends with Pumpy and bsak), but I didn't add her. Anyone who I missed, feel free to add me.
In other news..I mentioned upthread that when I joined, I added everyone in my gmail contacts, and it included my mom without noticing. At first it was no big deal, since someone sent her an invite just a couple weeks before and she didn't know what she was doing, but now she's an addict! She's even signing on and chatting with people when she's with family. Crazy.
A lot of people who poo-poo facebook don't really understand it is a seriously useful thing. I had an argument the other day with someone who thought if he got a facebook profile he might get fired from work. He says "it happens all the time!" For some weird reason a lot of people think it is some sort of blog where you are required to post everything that goes through your head or something.

Yeah, I have a friend that's constantly disabling and enabling his account. I find it useful to send mass messages to people and just generally keep up-to-date with some people that I don't see regularly... so I don't get why someone would "hate" it.

I hate it because I'm at the age (21) where I do a lot of stupid shit. Therefore, a lot of stupid shit gets caught on film. Therefore, a lot of stupid people decide it's funny to put all that stupid shit on facebook.
And not to mention, and I'm sure this is because my crowd is younger, there are a lot of facebook stalkers out there.
This can be prevented, yes, by not doing "stupid shit", and by not putting everything on facebook about your life, which I don't, but it annoys the hell out of me to hear this all day, " I saw this on so and so's facebook the other day! Can you believe it! Yea! It was under his Halloween album, about the third row down! "

I've found Facebook fairly useful for keeping up with some people I otherwise don't find the time for. I don't use it heavily though. I introduced my wife to it and now I can never tear her away from it. It seems to be a great tool for really keeping us in better touch with people, doing more socialization, etc. And judging by my family it's spreading out from teh college crowd quite quickly.

My sister gave me a lot of...flack this week for not being on Facebook. To be honest, my main reason right now for not being on Facebook is laziness. I feel like I spend enough time here, on Twitter, on Flickr, and on another message board that everybody who needs to hear from me does. Admittedly, I am mildly concerned about being "invisible" in case work ever looked for me, but I know there are ways to keep things private/unsearchable. But, really, when it comes down to it, I'm not on FB because I'm lazy.
What do y'all think? Is it worth my time to give it a go? What are the advantages of FB?

I'm the same way. One of my other policies is that I never add a current student of mine as a friend (I am a teacher). Once they graduate, if they add me, I will accept, but I won't request them. This seems pretty safe. Some of my other teacher friends obviously add their students constantly, and from what I can see of their main profile page, it looks scary as hell as far as things a teacher should be staying the hell away from with regards to their students.

Yeah, this is why I don't add students of mine as facebook friends until after the class is over and then only if they've requested me.
...Of course, that didn't work out entirely as planned when two of the students ended up in one of my sections for this semester, but that's all right in their case.

Can anyone explain to me what use a socially awkward guy in his late forties would have of Facebook?
I've got a bunch of people telling me to get on it and I can't figure out why.....

In all seriousness, to stay in touch with friends and get in touch with friends from years ago. I've found a couple of friends from high school thru Facebook.

did they change something?
I used to be able to click on friends and see people with recently updated status. Now I go to friends and it brings me to a page where it wants to search for new friends.

Yeah they changed it. I have no idea why. I used to always do the same thing and go to "recently updated" for a quick check on what's changed because I hated using the tabs on the left hand column but now that's the only want to do it now. I hate the new Facebook. I never minded the changes in the past but really spend less time on the site now because I find it such a mess.

Now that I'm on at home, I noticed that, too. When I'm at work, I use wakooz.com to get to facebook, since facebook blocked. When I use wakooz, the feed is pretty much just like clicking 'friends' used to be -- status updates only, and none of the stupid quizzes.

I just noticed them now, but....if you look on the left side of your facebook page, you should see them. The top one is probably news feed, then the next few are whatever networks you have -- I apparently have one for Chicago and one for Michigan, though I don't recall making them. There's also photos, links, and video.

Really I just want a way to see friends who have recently updated their status

Kind of like Lathum said (I think), I don't see anything on the left until I go to Friends tab (at the top) and then there's something about making lists on the left of the ensuing page.
I think what may be throwing me is the phrasing, I was thinking "tabs" that look like the ones across the top rather than little bitty text links.
At any rate, I'm pretty sure I'm tuned in to what Lathum is looking for, a way to see any/all friends recent updates without having to click each one individually. If that's going to be the only way to see what's going on then I figure my use of Facebook is going to be pretty brief. I was only vaguely interested enough to scan through the list of updates for everybody once every day or so. Clicking each individual name just to see if maybe they've added something? Fuck that.

I guess I don't use facebook as much as some of you, but I don't understand what you all are trying to do.
I just load up Incompatible Browser | Facebook (www.facebook.com) and it defaults to the page where it lists all of my friends most recent posts/comments. If I go to some other page, I just click on "Home" to take me back there.

Yes, when I meant tabs I meant what people are calling lists here--on the left hand side of the screen you should see lists for all of your networks plus any additional lists you created, which are useful if you want to limit certain people to only seeing your limited profile, not have access to your pictures or that sort of thing.

I swear to you that following your link just produced a different result than me typing the same exact url in manually earlier, namely I see the updates I'm used to seeing (in my brief time on Facebook) as opposed to virtually nothing in that center frame earlier. Subsequent attempts to type it in are acting normally. It's like it restored some setting or something that was wonky an hour ago (and yes, I was definitely logged in earlier since I could navigate to my friends list).
Weird.

what Alan is using will have to do, but it is WAY more cluttered then it used to be.
I like seeing updates and thats it, not all the comments, etc...

If you just want status updates, use Twitter for gods' sake (and no, I'm not saying that is the only thing Twitter is for).
Hell, the quizzes and responses to my status update (changed through Twitter) are really the only thing that keeps me going back to Facebook these days (I guess I also use it b-day messages)

Nobody I know uses twitter. My twitter account is mainly just to take a peek at what celeb personalities are up to while I'm trying to waste a few minutes making deposits in the bathroom.
This facebook change is really annoying though.

it gets kinda annoying sometimes, y'kno?
I don't mind the changes, they are usually for the better. The only thing I don't like about it is it prompts half the people on my friends list to gripe about changes.

Really weird to talk to some people on FB,which I don't do all that often.
But chatting w/ my longest running ex for the first time about 5 years and only maybe the 3rd time since we've both married was pretty f'n weird even by FB standards.
Just felt ... odd.
And no, nothing inappropriate odd, just weird & even moreso with Sirius Hair Nation playing in the background 'cause that's a good bit of the right era.
