Remember him?
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Ron Powlus, touted as a surefire Heisman Trophy winner when he arrived at Notre Dame in 1993 but never came close, is going to try to help the Irish find their next Heisman recipient.
Powlus was hired Tuesday as Notre Dame's director of personnel development, where he will organize recruiting. The position does not allow him to evaluate players on film or leave campus to recruit, said John Heisler, senior associate athletic director. But Powlus will be allowed to meet with recruits on campus.
"I'm very excited to be returning to what I believe to be the pinnacle of college football," Powlus said. "I've been itching to get back into the world of college football.
"I can be a good resource for what it's like to play college football at Notre Dame."
Powlus had many highs and lows during his five years at Notre Dame, breaking his left collarbone twice during his freshman year.
The next year, the first in which Powlus played, the Irish dropped out of the rankings for the first time since 1986. Notre Dame went 30-17-1 during Powlus' years as the starter.
He set 20 school marks, and still holds Irish records for total offense (7,479 yards), passing yards (7,602), pass completions (558) and pass attempts (558).
I wonder if he had to pawn off any of his eight Heisman Trophies, yet?

Come to ND. You could be the next Ron Powlus.

What is this guy talking about? Beano said that Powlus was gonna win three Heismans, and Beano is never wrong...

He can't evaluate players on film... but he also can't leave campus to recruit. Sounds like a candidate to join us here at FOFC all day, every day, to me.
I wonder if they are going to force him to wear an ankle monitor, or whether he has to have the express written permission of Charlie Weiss to take a piss off campus or use his VCR.

You beat me to it. That struck me as quite odd.
We're going to hire you for X job. Here's a list of everything your job does NOT entail. Now get to work!

All he has to do is smile and wave his little hat when recruits walk by.

Why? To remind recruits of the glory years?

I wonder if he has to wear a minimum of 10 pieces of Notre Dame flair when he does that.

No, to remind the recruits that he is not dead.

That's the odd part. Kind the wrong message. Come talk to Ron, he was overrated and the team stunk but hey he got a scholorship and look at him now with his own office and all.

I'm happy for Ron. He gets kind of a raw deal, mainly due to the Beano quote that put a lot of pressure on him early.
The kid had all kinds of hype coming out of high school. Two shattered collar bones later, he still was able to break 20 passing records at ND. It's not really his fault that outside of Derrick Mayes, he had nobody to throw to during his career, yet he still managed to put up numbers.
In reality, even during his best years, Holtz and staff weren't churning out NFL QB's and Pawlus never really developed as a pro prospect. Outside of his injury and the massive hype, his biggest problem may have been selecting the wrong university if what he wanted was a career as a passing QB. While he put up numbers at ND, he was not ready for the NFL.
I wonder what would have happened had he chosen a different school. He had to know this might happen coming in and ND fans should be glad he chose the school anyway.
Anyhow, I think he's a good person to put in this position. Listen, every hot shot high schooler thinks the hype will last all the way into the NFL. Most of them never make it. What's wrong with showcasing a guy who translated his hype into a good education and a solid career?
Lou Holtz used to tell recruits that ND was not a four year decision, but a 40 year decision.

Well, 10 is the "minimum" number of pieces, yes, but we like our recruits to express themselves.

I don't know how much "recruiting" Powlus will do. I believe the position is more administrative.
There was actually talk about Tim Brown getting involved somehow but he's not sure yet if he's going to play another season or not. That would be a nice selling point having a Heisman Trophy winner meeting with recruits on campus.

Look at it this way... big shot recruit comes in... sees Notre Dame... sees Ron Powlus... and the thinking is, "Even if I flop, good ole' ND is gonna take care of me..."
