WOW.Totatally unexpected.
I don't remember the last time San Francisco cashed in that much money for a Free agent !
Arguably the highest rated OT on the market this year, Jennings has been a starter in Buffalo each of the past 3 seasons (was a 2001 3rd round pick).
He's still young, 27 years old, and entering what should be the prime of his career. Jennings is expected to come in at LT while pushing struggling former 1st round pick to RT.
OT Jonas Jennings to 49ers : 7 years for $36M and a $12M signing bonus !
So, now that we have significantly improved our pass protection...does that mean we are going to go QB with the #1 overall pick ?

I don't know what to make of the deal -- my roommate is a diehard Bills fan, and he thinks that Jennings is pretty good.
I'm a little worried that we spent that much on a guy...but this definitely upgrades our horrendous offensive line, which is one of the biggest need positions we have. Not a bad first move in FA, not bad at all.

Great pickup, we spent a lot of money on him but I'm sure he's worth it. He'll really help out with pass protection and the running game which we need a lot. Hopefully they don't get rid of Scott Gragg, he's still a good tackle and a good guy. About the QB question, unless there is someone that comes out on the free agent market, I think that the Niners will go for a QB by either taking one at #1 or trading down.

Well "duh" Sharpieman ;-)
of course they'll bring in a QB either #1 or at some point in the Draft, or on the market... ;-)
The more I read/see of Rodgers and Smith, the more I like them at #1...
I'm awaiting their private workouts (March 16-17) and from then we will probably know who's the clear cut top QB on the board. I like them both for now.
Hmmm..O line is a big problem....but that's a lot of cash to throw at one problem when the team has MANY problems it needs to adress.

True, but O-Line is an area where improvments can upgrade the entire offense. Running backs have bigger holes, QBs get more time, and TEs/RBs can be released into pass patterns creating mismatches because they do not need to stay in to help block.
If you are going to spend big in FA, O-line is the place to do it, IMO.
You also need a QB to throw the ball...and a decent RB to hit those holes :)

Barlow's a pretty good RB...and we still have the #1 pick. I don't like either Rodgers or Smith at that pick, but there are worse options.
I haven't heard much about LeFors in the off-season...which is sad, because I liked him a lot whenever I watched him play.

This looks like a major upgrade providing he is able to stay healthy. I hope they can keep Gragg as they need all the depth they can get. With the return of a healthy Newberry they should be a lot better up front.
With the plan for the defense to switch to a 3-4, they need a DT that can play nose tackle.

I guess it shows how much attention I pay to the NFL these days when a guy who I've never heard of signs a $50MM contract. I honestly thought this thread was referring to a Darkiller FOF dynasty.

This is a good signing for the 49ers no matter how good Jennings is. I never would have thought that York would fork out a $12 million signing bonus. Maybe this will help improve the 49ers image. I kind of miss having them in the upper echelon of teams, even though I don't consider myself a fan of theirs.

There are a team I love to hate, yet there is no joy in them being bottom feeders. Totally unlike the Cowboys who warm my heart the more they lose.

As a Bills fan and resident in the Buffalo area, this hurts, but it's not a big blow. Jennings was the best linemen we had, though our line was a mess to begin with.
Jennings is a good tackle, but he's not a "premier" one. He just seems to have problems staying healthy.
Barlow's a pretty good RB...
You think he can bounce back from last season?

I am a die hard Bills fan. Jonas is a good player, but definately not worth the $$$ he got. Look how many times Drew got sacked while in Buffalo. It's no coincedence. Hopefully Buffalo can pull off the LJ Shelton deal. This would be an upgrade, I think.

I think Mike Williams showed in the last 11 games that he was the best we have. Not to mention another year with our o-line coach, things could be good.

For a top five pick two/three years ago, he didn't show up until the middle of this season. If he continues to develop and play like that on regular basic, then yes, he would be a emerging talent finally living up to his hype.
I guess I'm just hoping. I don't want Losman getting killed

Definitely. Barlow posted career highs in carries and touchdowns, and also fumbled less than he ever has before. Our offensive line was horrible last year, and I'd blame his low yardage/ypc numbers on that.

I was shocked to see these numbers and hope it means York will spend money and is commited to winning. Other free agents may sign with them now, draft picks may be easier to sign. I'm also hoping it gives them more leverage to trade the #1 pick. To get value for the pick, they have to make other teams believe that they want to pick first. (Of course, the other teams also have to believe that the #1 is worth something...)
