My Uncle is the head coach of the girls basketball team at my alma mater. He has had some great seasons and this year is no exception. Going into the section championship game (one level below 16 team state playoff) his team was ranked No. 5 amongst all california Div IV (small) schools and was ranked No. 2 in the local area amongst all schools. The team's only loss was to the area's top ranked Div. I(big) school and his team avenged that early season loss with a double digit win.
So in the section finals, my uncle's team is playing a tough team but a team who my uncle's team beat by 22 points in the regular season. The game is played at Arco Arena.
To start the second half of the championship game, my uncle's team is ahead by 14 points and goes on to score TWO points in the third quarter. Apparently my uncle's team finds it almost impossible to score with both hands wrapped firmly around their throat. The opposing team keeps gnawing away at the lead and when the final buzzer sounds, my uncle's team lost 64-65.
This was my uncle's last game coaching. At the beginning of the year he decided to coach this last season b/c he promised the girls on the team he would coach them through to graduation.
It was just one of those games where everything started to go wrong, and you just knew that the other team was going to catch up before time ran out.
