I'm sure one of the brilliant minds here can point me in the right direction. Where can I find software that will allow me to pull music off of an iPod onto a PC?

Is that music you're stealing?

Then you shouldn't have to ask...your ipod will still be recognized by the computer you originally set it up on.
You can use itunes, or Musicmatch. Both were offered with ipods for PC, Depending on when you got yours.

ever heard of a hard drive dying?
If you won't or can't help me, stay the fuck out of here. Just don't bust my balls about copyright law.

I know on my Iriver that is not possible, due to the chance that I could *gasp* hook up to another computer, upload tracks, then transfer them to my computer. I can only upload. Then when I want to change tracks, I have to delete the old ones to create room.
Not sure if ipod is the same.

WAAAAY out of line on your part.
First of all, it's not a private post. Second of all, I can speak my mind if I wish. Third, you can be asked to 'eat my ass' if your attitude toward me continues.
You are SOOO not rock n roll with this. Too bad.

when you plug in your ipod, go to my computer
the ipod should show up as an "f" drive. just open up the drive, and copy all the folders to your computer.

I don't think you can. My hard drive died, and when I hooked up my Ipod to my new hard drive I got an error message saying something about overwriting existing files on the Ipod.
If anyone has any help on this I would really appreciate it too.

iPod works like a one-way street, you can put tracks on but cannot pull them off (you can only delete them).
Now here's a scenario:
1. You invest tons of time putting songs onto your computer (1000+ CD's)
2. You put those songs on your iPod
3. Your hard drive/computer die
You're now faced with either re-ripping 1000+ CDs to get all your music back on your PC, or finding a way to circumvent the (silly) iPod software which doesn't allow iPod-->PC transfer.

YAWN...
First, I accept your apology. Second, you didn't indicate your problem before you dropped the f-bomb (hard drive).
Troll schmoll. Don't be trying to look for something that isn't there. It's a waste of your time and a clever insinuation to hide behind.
And lastly...(in the most sincere way) you should always back up your ripped cds on a regular basis. This problem of yours will never happen to me because that is what I do.

The iPod Shuffle I just received I was able to do this with iTunes.

Its pretty easy, they just don't make it possible from within iTunes (as far as I know)... When you plug in your iPod it will show up as just another hard disk. If you go there and display hidden folders one of them will be music or something similar (there are two hidden folders - one of them has the music). Navigate into tat folder and you'll see a bunch of numbered folders... all the music is in those folders. You can copy and paste from there.

I'll extend this procedure...
make a folder and drop all the numbered folders from the iPod into this folder.
Clear iTunes completely
Start a new library but make sure to turn on "let iTunes organize music"
Add the folder you created to itunes
After iTunes does it's business all of yor music will be in nice neat folders :)

thanks. Upon further reading it appears that while this used to be easier to do, newer versions of iTunes don't allow you to move files in the same manner, so this sort of work-around is needed.

I had to use this procedure to recover some music I got off napster a long time ago...err... i mean bought from iTunes Music Store.

The one i was happiest to find is a plug-in that will go search for and import the artwork for the albums you have.

Apple hasn't bothered much with security on ripped music. If it's ripped, as opposed to purchased, then you can, as Daimyo said, just show hidden files and then grab it. You just need to make sure that the PC you pull it to can read the format it's in.
If it's purchased music, well, you want to make sure you've deauthorized the prior computer, because you only get 5 authorizations, and Apple will *usually* not reset those, although occasionally they'll make an exception.

Yeah, that's awesome for the stuff you've ripped. It's not so cool when you're transferring a file to your iPod (assuming it's not an iPod photo) and the file size is burgeoning because it *also* includes the artwork info.
