View Full Version : What happened to sleep mode?

I just noticed that my computer, which is running XP Home, no longer has a sleep mode. The "standby" option is greyed out on the Windows exit screen. I did not adjust any options on my computer, and have had no problem putting the computer in sleep mode for long periods of time last semester. What's going on?

I think it's pretty clear that your computer has developed intelligence. I would stock up on canned goods and head for a cabin in the mountains.

Perhaps, someone switched the option off that enables computer standby. I think it is an option under Power Consumption in the control panel.

*bump*
I checked to see if someone accidentally turned off a power save option, but I couldn't find where anyone might have messed with my settings. I know I didn't.

Doesn't sleep mode use up some harddrive space for temporary saves of programs that you have open? Are you low on harddrive space?

Nope, I just checked and my HD space is fine. This is very odd...

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Power Options -> Hibernate -> Enable Hibernation
Guess they decided to change the name of it in XP, does the same thing as 98 though.

Did you upgrade to SP2? I know that changes some settings, but not sure about that particular one.

I did not upgrade to SP2, and I am not able to enable or diable hibernation from the power options menu. My options are: power schemes, advanced, and ups. On the power schemes screen it has a drag down option to choose when the monitor will automatically shut off, but no option to allow me to click-control the computer to go to sleep.

Something I pulled off a message board.
I have had a similar problem with an Acer Travelmate 223 which was running XP home, where standby was enabled. Having wiped and gone for XP pro, standby now greyed out. After much digging have discovered that the VGA driver installed by XP pro was insufficient, have now installed that suggested by manufacturer, and hey presto Standby now works, it has even now enabled more options inside power options which weren't there previously! Weird
