Better than the first, definitely scary and a truly unique twist near the end that will truly scare parents everywhere. I do recceomend it if you like a scary fair.

Personally, I didn't think it was as scary as the first, but I did still enjoy it a lot. I would have enjoyed it a lot more if the theater hadn't been filled with douchebag teenieboppers who were talking through the entire thing, though...

Did anyone else get a promotional videotape before the first one came out. My wife got one from a scifi convention, and when we put it in the VCR it somehow made our telephone ring and that message play. It freaked her out. I'm still not sure how that technology worked. We still have the tape in a lead box that she bought for it, because the tape scared her so much.

I give you my word that I'm not lying about the tape. No BS. Yes, she really bought a lead box for it too. It scared her, my mother-in-law, and most of her family. I mean it REALLY scared her. I spent a week trying to comfort her. I'm still not sure how the heck the technology works as the VCR is not connected to the phone in any way. However, our VCR is connected to a cable box. I'll send it to someone if they really want to verify it (of course, I'd have to have it back as she would be angry if I lost the tape.) Even though it scares her, she thinks it is very cool.

Just to make sure it wasn't a friend or someone playing a trick on her. I took it to a friend's house, and it did the same thing there. She took it to her father's house, and it did the same thing at his house as well. Each time, it called their number and played the freaky message from the movie.

Warning....cranky review, possible spoiler.
Some things I simply cannot do. I can't fly. I can't turn water into wine. I can't make Salma Hayek love me. And I can't adequately convey just what a horrible, mind-numbing experience it was trying to sit through this film without diving from my seat, head-first, into the concrete floor.
Didn't Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts) and her freaky-ass little kid Aidan (David Dorfman) solve the mystery of the ring and the videotape that kills people at the end of the first film, when they figured out that the pre-teen goth chick haunting everybody was thrown down a well? I sure thought so.
Now, wouldn't you think that after the bad experiences with video, Rachel might get Aidan hooked on books or phonics or simply throw out the television altogether since it's the only way goth chick can potentially suck them into her world? Or at the very least, after the first signs of trouble, like when somebody comes out of the TV, you pitch the thing in the trash. It's really a sign of our sick society that this is never an option.
The scariest thing about the entire movie is that the new town where Rachel and Aidan have moved seems to have massive wiring problems. There's nowhere the two of them can go where some light isn't suddenly going out. It's also a good thing that Naomi Watts is a MILF because no single man in his right mind would go near her and her devil child if he didn't think he could get laid. Clearly, Max (Simon Baker) goes on pheromonal overload and completely ignores the fact that Aidan is a head revolution away from being Linda Blair.
Annoying images of water pervade this entire movie. I thought of the classic "L'Avventura" and concluded that director Hideo Nakata might be Antonioni's long lost retarded son. Scenes and dialogue are pieced together in some sort of ADD stream of consciousness. There's a scene I call "Fun with Deer" where vicious deer attack Rachel's car because Aidan is possessed or he smells like berries. It's like watching the video the ranger might show you before letting you embark on the nature trail from hell. Then there's the string of painful cameos. Elizabeth Perkins is the first. Gary Cole is the second, which made me hope against hope that the movie would turn into "Office Space" for a few moments. The last, by Sissy Spacek, simply made me feel sorry for her like somebody is sorry for a squirrel that's just been run over by a bus.
Put "The Ring 2" on a tape with "Blair Witch 2" and there's some video that could actually kill somebody

Did the tape have a title? I want to buy one...No. My wife is kind of geeky but beautiful (I am geeky too so that works out well) and she goes to the scifi-fantasy convention that comes to town every so often. In this case, Crescent City Con. She was given the tape at the door. She thinks the first few hundred people there got a copy of the tape. She wasn't told anything about the tape. She watched the first few seconds of the tape, and thought it was odd and turned it off (it had images from what people see in the movie.) After we watched the ring together, she said in the theater "I have that tape." Everyone turned around at us, and looked oddly at us. She continued to watch the movie, but was a little freaked out. We went home and watched the whole tape making the connection of the movie and the tape.
Only after the tape plays all the way through, does it make the phone call occur. When she took it to a friend's house, it made her friend's cell phone and house phone ring almost simultaneously (which I didn't know til I asked her today about it.) There goes my theory that it is using the cable lines. The technology is fascinating. She said that the call didn't occur unless the tape was watched all the way through. We haven't watched it since the first movie was in the theaters to see if it still works.

She did duplicate it, because it freaked her out so much. She wanted to show copies to her friends. The copies don't make the phone ring.

The tape we have doesn't have any logos. It has bigger reels than usual, and it barely has any tape in it. Just enough tape to play the wierd images which lasted a minute maximum. Other than that, it has a little red clip like thing in one of the reels (which might contain the technology?) Other than that, it looks like a generic blank tape.

This one doesn't seem to have too much reel in it.Impossible to say for certain in the picture, but that looks just like it from what I can see. Big reels or whatever the central piece is called that holds the tape. Huge reels, only a little bit of tape and it is the right length. I think that is what she got.
If they did this stunt for the original movie, I'd imagine they would have repeated it for the sequel.

Maybe the tape has some kind of GPS technology that is activated when the it plays. The gps signal is picked up by a satellite that transmits the info to a computer that then looks up telephone numbers associated with that address. Then an autodialer attached to the computer calls the numbers and delivers the message.

Your wife is playing a practical joke on you;

RFUS, I wasn't a very active member of this board when the original ring came out, and I honestly didn't think about mentioning it here until I saw this thread.
JeeberD, I do like a good practical joke with my friends, but I don't think this would be a good practical joke. Really, it would just be a bad lie. It is not.
Judicial Clerk, I seriously considered the possibility that my wife was playing a practical joke on me. It's possible she pulled one over on me, and I'm really tempted to play the tape now. I've never done it since the first time. She wouldn't know that I was doing it so it would be a good empirical test. I'm going to do that now.
Ok, It played 1 minute of 46 seconds of wierd images from the first movie. Then it went to a snowy screen. Then 30 seconds later, it flashed a web site address. Now it is just a black screen and it has been going for 3 minutes and 40 seconds with no call yet. Of course, Mrs. Eaglesfan let it run til the tape stopped before we got the call. So, I'm still letting it run.
If I don't get a phone call, she either played a great prank on me or it was some GPS.. I just got a call, but it was the New York Times wanting to know if I wanted a subscription. I did jump for a second when the phone rang though.
Anyway, the timer has gone to 5 minutes and 10 seconds and it has stopped moving. So either my wife played a great practical joke on me, or the technology that made this tape work before is no longer active. *shrug*
The tape is rewinding now. I'll let you know if I get any creepy calls soon.

To throw another wrench in the whole thing, maybe since this was for the promotion of the first Ring movie, the whole satellite idea no longer works. Meaning they could have possibly shut it off by now.

ROFL :)
I had just woke up from a nap when I checked this thread, and I'm always a little disoriented when I wake up from a nap. So I'll blame that on me actually jumping when the New York Times called. I'll give it 5 minutes, then I'm running to the store as I planned.

I was considering that when I said the technology might not be working anymore.
I really don't think my wife was acting and playing a joke on me. If she was, she is a much better actress than I ever knew. That is kind of a scary thought

So, either Mrs. Eaglesfan is a great actress and I should be worried about what else she has fooled me, or the technology is just not active any longer.
