Crowded House drummer dies

March 28, 2005

SYDNEY, Australia -- The drummer from 1980s rock band Crowded House hanged himself in a park in Australia, an emergency services spokeswoman said Monday.

The body of Paul Hester, 46, was found Saturday in a Melbourne park.

Mr. Hester joined the New Zealand group Split Enz in 1983. He and Split Enz singer Neil Finn formed Crowded House in 1985 with bassist Nick Seymour. Their hits included ''Don't Dream it's Over.''

Crowded House was one of those bands I wouldn't touch with a 10-foot pole back in high school/college, but grew to appreciate long after they had been popular. Apparently, this guy suffered from depression and was known to be up and down. The lyrics from "Never Be the Same" seem pretty appropriate here:

Don't stand around
Like friends at a funeral
Eyes to the ground
It could've been you
Why do you weep
For the passing of ages
You slip with the back of your hand
You're taking it out on the one you love
I couldn't believe it
But we might still survive
And rise up through the maze
If you could change your life
And never be the same
How long must I wait
For you to release me
I pay for each mistake
While you suffer in silence
I could still have an easy life
But the lie ain't worth the living
Once more will I hear you say
We might still survive
And rise up through the maze
If you could change your life
And never be the same
Don't stand around
Like friends at a funeral
Eyes to the ground
Don't suffer in silence
'Cause we might still survive
And rise up through the maze
If you could change your life
And never be the same
Everytime I hear you
Never be the same
And everytime I mess up
Never be the same

amen to that. I think the Crowded House Greatest Hits cd has to be one of the best "best of" compilations I've ever heard. Terribly sorry to hear about this.

I thought Sixpence None the Richer wrote that song? (Just kidding, had a debate about a month ago with a young coworker who was explaining all of Sixpence's contributions to music and I had to google Crowded House to win the free lunch)
