Burger King debuts Enormous Omelet Sandwich with more calories, fat than Whopper.
March 28, 2005: 11:34 AM EST
NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Burger King has unveiled a new breakfast sandwich that's a huge bet not everyone is looking to watch their diet.
The No. 2 fast food chain debuted its Enormous Omelet Sandwich Monday. The sandwich has one sausage patty, two eggs, two American cheese slices and three strips of bacon.
That works out to 730 calories and 47 grams of fat -- more than a Whopper burger, which the Burger King Web site said has 700 calories and 42 grams of fat.
While the new breakfast sandwich goes against the trend at some competitors to offer healthier fare, some analysts were quoted as saying the new sandwich is likely to be a sales success.
"The critics will still label it food porn," Sherri Daye Scott, editor at fast-food magazine QSR, told USA Today, which first reported the story. "But the average male fast-food customer does not have a problem with this."
Scott was right -- the new breakfast sandwich was quickly criticized due to health concerns.
"Eating like this is a step on the way to a heart attack," Fred Pescatore, author of The Hamptons Diet told the paper. "It's irresponsible."
Morgan Spurlock, who ridiculed McDonald's in the documentary film "Super Size Me," told the paper that Burger King's new breakfast sandwich, "should come with a $5-off coupon for your first angioplasty."
Still the paper said the new offering could also make Burger King more of a player in the breakfast market, where USA Today reports it is quite a bit behind McDonald's (Research).
Burger King has been privately held since it was sold by British food conglomerate Diageo to a group led by Texas Pacific Group in 2002.

How is piling 2 eggs, sausage, bacon, and cheese on some bread an "omellete"? Did they qualify on a technicality by folding the cheese inside the eggs? Bacon strips and an entire sausage patty aren't omellete ingredients, they're side dishes.

Saw the commercial for it last night. Sort of freaky with Burger King making an appearance. The end of the commercial was sort of funny though with a bird sitting on Burger King's head.

Judging by BK's latest commercial, that's the angle they are going for.

BTW, I know the picture never matches real life, but each egg layer looks to be about 2 eggs in that picture. One egg spread thin enough to fit the full length of that bun would NOT look like that pic.

I don't know, Ksyrup. Back in high school when I worked at BK the eggs we cooked were pretty thick. Cooked them in a pan and then folded them over kind to double the thickness.
Of course, I think they've changed the egg cooking process since my day...

I think we actually got eight "eggs" out of one pan cooked. If they just cut them in half instead of in fourths like we did then it would be just about the perfect size...

They actually had one of these breakfast sandwiches on the desk in front of them this morning on the early hour of Good Morning America I think it was. Before 7 a.m.
Anyways, they did a little piece on it and ended with comparing it to the Big Mac, the Whopper, and the Whopper w/ cheese. Then they threw in a bit of a surprise to me. So I went and checked it out myself.
Several Starbucks' Frappuccinos are even worse for you then this sandwich. More calories anyways....
I guess if I had ever given it much though I would not have been real surprised, but I am not a big Starbucks guy.....

Oh no, have they? We used to put the big pan over the deep fryer...I seem to remember folding them twice though, but I could be wrong. I employ the same tactic doing these at home now with the square Sunbeam skillet...just pour in the eggs, split into quarters, and fold twice. :)
