ESPN is doing their typical, "best weekend of basketball ever" hype job on the weekend games. I think there is an argument this was the best round of 8 since the tournament expanded to 64 teams. However, I'm wondering where it ranks in terms of sweet 16 weekends as a whole (all four days of games). It's certainly up there.

One other great one that immediately comes to mind for me is 1990. There, you had:

Thursday night: Tate George's shot to beat Clemson. A down to the wire finish between Xavier and Texas.

Friday night: Minnesota upsets number 2 seed Syracuse. Alabama plays slow down basketball against Loyola Marymount in the first half. LMU is able to run in the second half to take a 62-60 victory. Ball State starts fouling UNLV with about 9 minutes left on the clock and erases a double digit deficit. They miss a 3 at the buzzer and lose 69-67. Kenny Anderson hits a shot at (or just after) the buzzer to send the Georgia Tech-Michigan State game into overtime. Tech prevails in OT 81-80.

Saturday: Laettner hits a shot at the buzzer to beat UConn. Arkansas outlasts Texas 88-85 (I think).

Sunday: Willie Burton misses a shot at the buzzer for Minnesota to give Georgia Tech a 93-91 win. UNLV runs LMU out of the gym 131-101.

Any others come to mind for people?

I think this weekend's games were the best Elite 8 games I had seen, but the games on Thursday and Friday were pretty bland.
