Saturday I cleaned up a spot behind my garage that had been neglected for a few years, leaves, trees, vines, and the dreaded poison ivy. So I got a little bit of poison on my arm, and by little bit I mean maybe a square inch worth. However, in the last 2 days it's started to spread a little bit, not drastically but I can notice a small difference, I've been washing it & using calamine lotion but it's just not helping.
To make things worse my wife started back to work today after her maternity leave and now I can't really get up at night or help with the baby at any time because a 3 month old with poison ivy wouldn't be a good thing. :(
Anyone have a home remedy or just any sort of suggestions? I'm desparate at this point and will try just about anything because wifey is pissed that I got it and can't help her out and I feel bad for making her shoulder the load.

There's this stuff called Tecnu that works really well. Not sure if it is available everywhere.

Great movie..oops
I am not allergic to it, which was alway fun because I would freak other people out by eating it, ect...
I belive the best way to get rid of it is to dry it out and cover it up with gauze or an ace bandage so it doesn't spread.

When I was much younger there was a kid in my neighborhood, that told us he wasn't allergic to it. To prove it to us he rubbed it all over him and even ate some of the stuff. He ended up taking a trip to the emergency room.
I'm not doubting you. It just made me think of this.

i had the same thing for the past week, a little spot on my arm- about a square inch...i got this anti-itch gel that puts like a "skin" on top of it...i would put that on, and then put a big bandaid on it and its almost all gone now.

Don't mess around with this. I'm speaking with the voice of much experience.
Go to the doctor. Get a shot of prednisone (sp?). The Dr might give you some pills to take in addition to the shot.
The iching will be gone by dinner.
You are very welcome.

Washing it after the first time does no good. A doctor told me once that all of the spreading is done before you even know you have it. If you wash it once with soap and water you cannot do anymore than that.

I once spent an entire afternoon rolling in virginia creeper before I knew what it was. At one point, I grabbed onto this vine that was hanging from the tree and swung through it, then fell into a big pile of dirt that was covered in it. Looked like a regular vine to me.
Man, did that suck. I had it everywhere, and went through about 5 bottles of calamine in 2 weeks.
She comes on like a rose - but everybody knows
She'll get you in Dutch
Now you can look - but you better not touch
Poison iv-y-y-y-y, poison iv-y-y-y-y
Late at night while you're sleepin' poison ivy comes a'creepin'
Arou-ou-ou-ou-ou-ound
She's pretty as a daisy - but look out man she's crazy
She'll really do you in
Now if you let her under your skin
Poison iv-y-y-y-y, poison iv-y-y-y-y
Late at night while you're sleepin' poison ivy comes a'creepin'
Arou-ou-ou-ou-ou-ound
Measles make you bumpy
And mumps'll make you lumpy
And chicken pox'll make you jump and twitch
A common cold'll fool ya
And whooping cough'll cool ya
But poison ivy, Lord'll make you itch!!
You're gonna need an ocean - of calamine lotion
You'll be scratchin' like a hound
The minute you start to mess around
Poison iv-y-y-y-y, poison iv-y-y-y-y
Late at night while you're sleepin' poison ivy comes a'creepin'
Arou-ou-ou-ou-ou-ound

I said it once, but it bears repeating. You cannot give it to someone else, unless you havent washed the affected area.
Can I spread it by Scratching?
"Rhus plants(poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac) are the most common cause of allergic contact dermatitis in the US. Rhus plans contain the potent antigen urushiol, which will sensitize 60% to 80% of the persons who are exposed to it. ...(It) may be carried on the fur of pets, clothing, shoes, toys, tools, or other objects and then transferred to the skin. Approximately 24 to 36 hrs after a sensitized person is exposed to the urushiol, a blistery, itching rash develops. Usually within 15 minutes of contact, the urushiol binds to skin proteins. If it is washed off with soap and water before that time, a reaction may be prevented. After the antigen is fixed, however, it cannot be washed off or transferred to other areas. Scratching or oozing blister fluid cannot spread the antigen to other areas of the body or to other persons. New lesions that appear a few days after the primary lesions represent less sensitive areas or areas where less antigen was deposited, not spreading of the antigen. Because the course of the reaction usually is 12 to 15 days, 2 weeks of medication should be prescribed. Reference [Dermatology in Primary Care 1994]

Went to the DR and got prednisolone and while I was at the pharmacy I picked up some tecnu so hopefully just a couple more days of this garbage. Thanks for the input.
Airhog, I'm not so sure it can't spread to other areas. Just last night I noticed a spot on my chest and one on my side, the whole time I was working with the weeds I had a shirt on, so unless it seaped thru my clothes or something I'm not sure how I would have gotten it there. And I'd rather not take the chance, even though your reference says it can't be spread to others, my wife would kill me if the youngun got it.

When I was a kid we had a bar of "real" oatmeal soap. Use a knife to scrape some off the bar and add a few drops of water to make a paste. Spread it on the area and just leave it. Within a day the rash would be gone.

Glad you got the Pred. You won't be needing anymore lotion, etc. The stuff works fast.
My doc has told me repeatedly that poison ivy doesn't spread....I think he's full of shit. He's trying to tell me that even though I'm so sensative to poison ivy that I break-out in a matter of minutes, there are parts of my body that will wait DAYS until they break out? Sorry doc...I'm not buying what you have to sell. Just give me the shot.
Oh, by the way, when I take a seven day treatment of Pred pills, they make me feel great. Too bad you can't take the stuff for very long without side effects, it works wonders.

Flame,
It's already starting to look a ton better, the sores that were popping up full of liquid have gone down immensely with just 1 day of the Pred and I've still been applying the cream to hopefully help dry it out even faster. Bad part is after taking the first dose of Pred yesterday I started getting extremely hot and light headed, but that only lasted a few hours before it subsided.
