"And in closing, a high-powered passing offense operating in the manner I described is the wave of the future. I guarantee that if you give me four big play wideouts, a riverboat gambler QB ready to air it out seventy times a game and a dedicated coaching staff, my team could hang with anyone in the country. Thank you."
I stepped down from the stage in the Hickory Room at the NACFC convention in Nashville, amid tepid applause from the fifteen assorted assistant coaches in attendance. Gary Sanders, my coach at UAB the last four years, didn't even bother coming. Oh well, I thought. I could go and try to land an assistant coaching job at a Birmingham high school and work on a graduate degree in my spare time. As for right now, I'm going to the bar.
"Mr. Adair?" The voice behind me causes me to whirl around.
"Yeah, that's me. What can I do for you?"
"Bernard Wells, athletic director at Thousand Oaks College. That was an interesting talk you just gave. Can I have a few minutes of your time?"
I was on a flight to LAX the next morning.
RULES:
(1) The maximum run percentage I will set is 12%, with run n' shoot my offense. No exceptions.
(2) Almost all recruiting is in the greater LA area for as long as I hold this job. If I go elsewhere for talent, I have to spend at least $1000 to get there.

The Georgia game mercifully ended at 5:15. At 5:16, Wells called me on my cell phone. I wasn't even in the locker room yet.
"Billy, do you realize that we just set history? Tiny Thousand Oaks College is going to be on SportsCenter all weekend!"
I thought he was going to be pissed. Actually, that's an amazing understatement. I thought my coaching career was going to be one game long, with the biggest Division I loss in a quarter-century on the line right below my name.

So here I am after realizing that my little school is 0-3, we've been outscored 169-29, and have suffered the largest defeat in Division I football since the late 70's. And my AD isn't even a little upset! Wells told me that a gimmick offense with a quirky young coach was the only way the school was going to get any pub in a town with USC and UCLA fighting for headlines.
Speaking of the paper, the Times just informed me that Anaheim and San Francisco, two other schools in the California League, haven't won yet either.I now have a new goal: crack the win column before they do.

With 9:10 left in the fourth quarter, we're comfortably leading San Francisco 28-7. :D My first coaching victory is in sight. Then BOOM!!!!!
San Francisco scores 21 points in the final nine minutes to force overtime.
Luckily for us, we kicked a field goal on our first drive and they imploded first, as Derek LeBlond sacked SF's Bautista on fourth down to seal the deal. We won!

WHO ARE THESE GUYS?
CL Doormat 1000 Oaks Clobbers Anaheim 72-13
According to Thousand Oaks coach Billy Adair, all his team needed was a little seasoning. "We knew that going to Georgia, North Texas, and West Virginia wasn't going to be easy, but that it was necessary to build the program," Adair said following his teams 72-13 victory over Anaheim College Saturday.
Senior quarterbacks Rod Rodriguez and Dex Brooks combined for an amazing 628 yards and eight touchdowns, setting new school records for offense in one game.
Adair and his team have a new entry in the record books: The first team in sixty years in Division I to score 70 or more in one game and give up 70 in another. "We're 2-0 in conference play right now, and nobody saw that coming a month ago," Adair stated. "We just need to keep this up and good things will happen." Adair, at 25 the youngest head coach in Division I, looks to keep his team rolling when they visit Bakersfield next weekend.

UPSTARTS LEADING NCAA
Thousand Oaks College made national news in their 87-0 loss to Georgia in their first game in Division I football. Now, the team is turning heads with a five game winning streak and some of the leading passers and receivers in the country. "It's a fun offense to run," said QB Rod Rodriguez after his team knocked off Stockton 45-13 Saturday. Rodriguez is apparently enjoying himself with 477, 625, and 487 yards passing in his last three games, vaulting him into third place nationally.
Sophomore wideout Wesley Hanson leads the country with 74 receptions in only nine contests. "I may have all those catches, but look at the opportunities we get here," says Hanson. "I could have had a hundred by now."
Not all is sunny for 5-4 Thousand Oaks, however. Rodriguez has been sacked 44 times this season, ten more than any other QB in the nation.

CL's 1000 Oaks, Riverside ready to rumble
Thousand Oaks has the leading passer in the nation in Rod Rodriguez, the top reciever in Wesley Hanson, and a brighter than expected future with young coach Billy Adair. Riverside has no fancy offense, no camera crews filming for SportsCenter, and no losses in conference either. With last week's defeat by Oakland, TOC is in a must win situation to continue its season.
Riverside is no California League pansy, though. With losses to solid Northern Illinois and Virginia Tech squads and one to the ACC's Wake Forest, they are already looking forward to national prominence in the form of a bowl game.
Thousand Oaks and Riverside play in Riverside tonight at 7:30, televised on ESPN3, "the trio".

Riverside shuts down 1000 Oaks 49-0
Thousand Oaks will have to wait another year for a chacne to get to the postseason after Riverside humbled them 49-0. Rod Rodriguez threw three interceptions in the first quarter and was promptly yanked by a furious coach Billy Adair. Dex Brooks was no more effective against a very talented Riverside defense. Riverside will play Hawaii in the Guinness Bowl in Corpus Christi, Texas, in a rematch of Riverside's 30-24 victory from Week One.

Notable season ending stuff...
Georgia, the team that thrashed TOC 87-0, won the national title with a 16-13 victory over USC. The Bulldogs finished at 13-0.
Riverside beat Hawaii 31-13 in the Guinness Bowl.
Penn State QB Derrick Barevics won the National POY award.
Roderick Rodriguez won the CL POY and CL offensive POY. Freshman WR Zack Manning won top offensive freshman.
Rodriguez, WR Wesley Hanson, WR Chester Rusk and S Rusty Ivans were all 1st team All-CL.
My 16 man recruiting class features 14 players from the greater LA area, one from San Jose, and one from Sacramento. None were in the top 100.

I'm having a tough time scheduling opponents that I feel we can hang with in the preseason. Ohio, Houston, and Louisiana-Monroe have all turned us down.
My cellphone starts ringing "Sweet Home Alabama", and that only means one thing: UAB's Gary Sanders, my former coach that didn't offer me a job on staff after my eligibility was complete. Not even as a unpaid graduate assistant. Needless to say, he didn't get a Christmas card last year.
"Billy, why don't you bring your boys down here week three? I got a hole in my schedule I'm having a problem filling."
I smile at the thought of my guys throwing for 600 yards and seven TD's in Birmingham with all the alumni looking at me as the one who got away.
"Good idea, Coach. Can you fax Bernard the paperwork?"
Later that day, I agreed to go to Raleigh as well to play the Wolfpack week one.

1000 Oaks Seeks Results, Payback in 2nd Year
Thousand Oaks College starts the 2005 season with trips to North Carolina State, Marshall, and coach Billy Adair's alma mater UAB before returning home to lock horns with Riverside, the inaugural California League champion. Riverside beat TOC 49-0 in their 2004 season finale. TOC will end their second season in Division I-A with a trip to nationally ranked Syracuse.
Record setting QB Rod Rodriguez has exited to be replaced by freshman Karl Buchanan, who is a hometown product of Thousand Oaks HS. Freshman wideouts Stan Lyon, Irving Preston and RB Bart Morton are expected to contribute immediately.

Well, I got my wish to come back to UAB as a bonafide D-1 coach...as an opponent. We gave my old coach Gary Sanders a run for his money, but fell short 28-25 after scoring and getting the two-point conversion with a minute left. My freshman WRs Preston and Lyon combined for 18 catches, and Buchanan was 28-50 for over 400 yards, with 3 TDs and three picks. It was a bitter loss, but we were competitive and I feel I showed the brass in Birmingham what a bad idea it was to let me walk.
TOC's athletic director, Bernard Wells, took me out for a steak dinner after the game and reaffirmed his committment to my program. Classy move, but I think he likes the whole "SportsCenter" approach to our offensive philosophy more than those implementing it.
This feels quite a bit like last season, when we were losing early in the year repeatedly while trying to find an identity. TOC has a tough game at home against Riverside next week, our defending CL champion that ran the conference table in 2004. Hopefully we can keep playing our kind of football and pull out our first W of the season.

CL SHOWDOWN!
3-0 Riverside, 0-3 1000 Oaks kick off League play
Riverside has been lurking around the polls lately, as most up and coming young programs look to do. Thousand Oaks is just looking for a win of any sort after a brutal three games on the road. RCA has impressive wins over UAB, Eastern Michigan, and New Mexico State, all mid-majors with winning traditions so far this season, while TOC is struggling to assimilate its freshman skill players into the air it out offense of coach Billy Adair.
Our pick: Riverside 31, 1000 Oaks 14.

Feisty 1000 Oaks holds on 27-20
Thousand Oaks College scored on a Bart Morton 3 yard run with nine seconds remaining to defeat Riverside 27-20 in CL action Saturday. Riverside was handed their first conference defeat in California League history while TOC cracks the win column for the first time on 2005. Freshman QB Karl Buchanan was 28 of 47 for over 400 yards, and junior reciever Wesley Hanson, the NCAA receptions leader in 2004, finally broke out of his slump with 7 catches for 155 yards.
TOC goes to Bakersfield next week, who they defeated 30-27 least season.

TOC wins 4th straight, Buchanan throws for 580
Thousand Oaks College's Karl Buchanan has thrown for more yards than any other player in the NCAA this season after a 45-17 rout of hapless San Francisco Saturday afternoon. Buchanan is producing over 400 yards of offense a contest, leading Claude Garrett of Colorado by over thirty yards. TOC, now 4-3 (3-0 CL) goes to Anaheim hoping to continue their hot ways.

Five Star Picks:
***** Thousand Oaks (5-3, 5-0 CL) @ Sacramento (4-4, 4-1 CL) -8
Are you kidding me? TOC has won 47-20, 41-14, 45-17, and 59-14 after holding on to beat Riverside, widely considered the class of the California League. Freshman QB Kurt Buchanan has thrown for over 3200 yards in only eight games this season, and they've won five in a row in conference play.
Sacto, on the other hand, lost 37-10 two weeks ago to Anaheim for it's only conference loss, a team TOC beat 59-14 last week. Not to mention TOC beat Sacto 42-21 last season in a game that wasn't as close as the score.
Ten units on Thousand Oaks +8.

Small School, Big Dreams
Tiny Thousand Oaks College to go Bowling
Thousand Oaks (AP) - Billy Adair, the coach of surprising TOC, is anything but a conformist. After a four year career at the University of Alabama at Birmingham playing tight end, he set out to find out how to beat teams with superior speed, size, and skill. Adair thinks he has found a way, and it leads through the California League, a new Division I conference in it's second season.
Adair, at 26 the youngest collegiate head coach in the country, has a vision. Think of the old run n' shoot formations of the past, and play the record at high speed. No huddles, no problem. Adair has a track team in pads on his field, and a local kid throwing the ball to them.
"Coach likes scoring. We have the second leading sackman in the country (freshman DE Jerome Swafford with 20) and he even knows that the key to us winning is to score fifty." says freshman QB Kurt Buchanan, who played his prep ball three miles away at Thousand Oaks High. "We have a bad rep around the country due to one bad game a year ago, and we have to live that down daily."
Buchanan is talking about the teams first game in Division I, a 87-0 pasting by eventual national champion Georgia in 2004. While rivals such as Riverside and Oakland were playing and beating teams like Eastern Michigan and UTEP, TOC was getting rocked by perennial powers such as Georgia, West Virginia, and Big West champion North Texas.
"It was a good experience for us, even though the gameplay wasn't very solid," says Rod Rodriguez, TOC's QB from last season. Rodriguez is currently playing for the af2 (Arena Football minor league) Tulsa Talons. "When we beat Anaheim, we knew right then that we could hang with anyone in the country if our game was on."
TOC beat Anaheim College 72-13 to earn the dubious distiction of being the first team since the 1940's to give up over seventy in one game and score seventy in another. They eventually lost to Oakland to deny a winning record then to Riverside for the league title. This year, they have run amok through the California League, including a 35-20 win over Oakland and a 27-20 victory over Riverside, to earn a spot in the postseason: the Guinness Bowl in sunny Corpus Christi, Texas.
One challenge still remains before a trip to the Gulf Coast, however. TOC must travel next week to Syracuse, who at 2-7 is struggling mightily this season. "That right there might be a program defining win," stated Adair. "Seven losses or not, they still play in the Big East and look at us as nobodies."
If Adair has his way, nobody might call his team nobodies again.

1000 Oaks drops OT Thriller to 'Cuse, 36-30
Thousand Oaks kicker Dale Demeester nailed a 36 yeard field goal to force overtime against Syracuse, but failed to convert on the first possession of the extra period in Saturday's action from New York. The Orange (4-7) scored on a Derek Evans pass to Michael Rosslyn on their second play to emerge victorious. TOC quarterback Kurt Buchanan threw for 455 yards in the loss.
TOC (7-4) will play Big West champion Utah State (7-4) in the Guinness Bowl next week. In related news, Riverside (9-2), the California League runner-up, will square off against Penn State (7-4) in the Motor City Bowl in Detroit. This is the first time that the CL has sent two teams to the postseason.

TOC wins 1st Bowl Game
TOC owns something that area powers UCLA, USC, and Riverside do not right now: a bowl game championship. Well, we know that Southern Cal and the Bruins haven't played yet, but the Los Angeles area might be witness to the birth of another great program. Behind stellar performances by Irv Preston and Kurt Buchanan, Thousand Oaks knocked off Big West champion Utah State 41-15 Wednesday night to kick off the bowl season.
Coach Billy Adair, at 26 the youngest head coach to win a bowl game in forty-five years, was euphoric after the game. "We came here to Corpus to win, and to serve notice that we will be a force to be reckoned with in the future. This team has the top passer for yardage, two of the top five recievers, and two top ten players in sacks and tackles in the country. All five of these young men I just mentioned are freshmen."
Thousand Oaks finishes at 8-4 for the season, and will probably not warrant a national ranking. In other CL action, Penn State defeated Riverside 41-10 in Detroit.

Notable season ending stuff...
QB Kurt Buchanan was the NCAA leader in completions, attempts, yards, interceptions, and sacks.
WR Irv Preston finished first in the NCAA in receptions with 94. Stan Lyon finshed tied for fifth with 74.
LB Courtney Bennett finished third in tackles with 132. DE Jerome Swafford finished second in sacks with 21.5. Bennett and CB Rufus Turk finished tied for fourth in interceptions with seven each.
Buchanan and Bennett were the respective NCAA offensive and defensive freshman, CL, and CL freshman POY's. Bennett was voted second team All-America.
The most amazing stat? We had EIGHT players named all-frosh. Buchanan, Preston, WR Stan Lyon, Swafford, DT Ernest Harmon, Bennett, Turk, and S Blaine Free.
UGA won it's second straight NCAA title, this time without our scalps on their belts.

EDITORIAL:
Rumor has it that UAB, who has gone 5-17 the last two years, is casting their eyes on young TOC head man Billy Adair, a former player under embattled coach Gary Sanders. Shouldn't the powers that be make sure that Adair doesn't leave, especially with that amazing freshman class he still gets three years to develop? It would be a shame if AD Bernard Wells lets this man get away, even as Wells himself has been named a finalist for the vacant Stanford opening. His assistant, former TOC volleyball player Rachel McKnight, is widely considered to be the frontrunner to replace Wells.
Speaking of Thousand Oaks, ex-QB Rod Rodriguez has been hired by Adair as his new quarterbacks coach. Many TOC fans cried out for an older, more experienced mentor to homegrown hero Kurt Buchanan, but those same fans forget that the head coach himself is only 26, with a conference title and a bowl win to his credit.
In closing, UAB shouldn't even be given a chance at Adair, especially since it is widely known that JJ Kinsella at USC and Reuben Tucker at UCLA are both in their late sixties and not wanting to coach forever. With no NFL team in Los Angeles, we need Adair and his unique style here more than ever.

Rod walks into my office in the Nabisco Center with a smirk on his face and the Times in his hand. "Coach, you ever read this rag?", Rodriguez asks.
"No, I'm a USA Today guy myself. Wells usually tells me if there's something worth reading in there."
"Really. Huh. Well, here then." He hands me the state news section of the front page.
"SON OF A BITCH!" I yell at the news of school affiliation. "Riverside and Oakland are now state schools? Call Wells for me and tell him I'll be there in ten minutes."
Rod shuffles his feet and looks at me cockeyed. He says, "Wells left for Stanford this morning, Coach. McKnight is his interim replacement."
"Rachel? Rachel the budget-killer? Are we going to have to bus to the damn bay now?"
"Well, actually we need to talk about your jet-setting football program, Billy. Be in my office in ten minutes." She looks pretty fearsome in her grey suit and newly short, executive length black hair as she spins around and marches out of my office.
"Oh shit, Rod. It looks like she's had the job for ten minutes and I already found my way onto her bad side. This might be a long season."

Dear Mr. Adair,
This letter is a preliminary offer of employment as the co-offensive coordinator for the UAB Blazer football program. You have come highly recommended by Head Coach Gary Sanders and he would like for you to join his staff in time for the 2006 season. Upon Coach Sanders retirement, you have my word that you will be a top candidate for the head coach position. This offer contains a contract for $95,000 a year for the next four years, with performance clauses.
Please respond within the next ten days.

"You're late."
I walk into the Athletic Director's office and marvel at the changes. Gone is the picture of Rod and WR Wesley Hanson handing the game ball to me after the Anaheim game in 2004. Gone is the Guinness Bowl Trophy from last season. Now there's a autographed volleyball, a vase full of little white flowers, and classical music playing in the background.
"Billy, why am I under the impression that you aren't happy with my appointment?"
I'm floored. "Ms. McKnight, I have no problem with anything that you or the rest of the administration is doing. If it wasn't for the chance that your predecessor gave me, I'd be coaching high school ball back in Alabama."
"Which brings me to my second point. Why are you soliciting offers from UAB? That is a breach of your contract with us, and frankly, I'm a little upset."
She's got this administrator talk down cold. "Ma'am, they sent me a letter, not the other way around. To be some sort of coach in waiting until Old Man Sanders hangs up his whistle. Here." I walk over and give her the letter from McNamara.
"$95,000. What are we paying you now, Billy?"
"I am paid $55,000 a season, with performance incentives. My contract expires in 2007. Last year with the bowl victory I earned around $75,000. That still ranks dead last in the California League, in case you were wondering." Take that, ice queen.
"Coach Adair, I am prepared to make an offer to you for three years with a total payout of $200,000. The regents have already signed off on this, but we need to set some rules."
I'm listening. If I can get a raise and only add one year to my deal, I'm going to take it. I can see all my freshman stars dominate until their eligibility is gone, and by then I'll only be 29, ready for the big time.
"Ms. McKnight, you have my attention."
"This school can't afford for you to be flying to places like Raleigh, Syracuse, Birmingham, and the like. From now on, you have to play all games in the Pacific Time Zone unless you make a bowl or it is already scheduled through my department."
Check. We can do that.
"Same with recruiting. Unless they come to you, you must only recruit in California."
Hmmm. OK, I guess. Check. Thank God this isn't Wyoming.
"One final thing. You must cut any player who violates team rules, goes on academic probation, or expresses an interest in a transfer."
Rachel the spinthrift AD assistant has been replaced by the new Rachel5000 - administrative model. I'd rather have a new whirlpool in the trainers room.
"Fine, Ms. McKnight. It's your department."

Offensive Coordinator Skip Calhoun walks into my office with a crushed look on his face.
"Billy, we gotta talk."
"Yeah Skip, what's up?"
"I'm done. I can't handle the crap from the administration, cutting players with grade problems and the like. Here's my resignation."
Calhoun throws an envelope on my desk and storms out the door. Rod walks in and asks, "Do you want me to call Carlos or do you want to?"
Carlos Snyder is an offensive genius from Denver. He's coached NAIA ball there for at least fifteen years. Rod and I know him from football camps over the years. He's a genius, but he hits the bottle a little too hard. Otherwise he'd be coaching Colorado State by now.
"Naw, I'll do it."

"Ms. McKnight, it's Billy. We're going to UCLA week one and to Fresno State week three. Syracuse and Marshall are both still coming here this season."
"Did you cut Preston and Bennett?"Irv Preston led the NCAA in receptions as a freshman, and is currently on scholastic probation. Courtney Bennett was a second team All-American and is in the same boat.
"No, I haven't yet. Final appeals dosn't start for another week. If the NCAA finds out we're cutting players like this we'll go on probation." I'm lying, obviously.
"I'll be watching. Don't let me find out you're doing something behind my back."

4-1 TOU Pops Rival Riverside 28-13
Thousand Oaks scored 21 points in the 4th quarter and rallied to defeat Riverside 28-13 Saturday afternoon. With wins over Riverside, Marshall, and Fresno, does coach Billy Adair think they deserve national recognition? "It's hard to tell right now", said Adair. "If we beat everyone that we play, our record will speak for itself." QB Karl Buchanan continued his masterful play of late as he threw for 363 yards.

New Sheriff In Town?
Everyone knows by now that USC is 10-0, #1 in all the land, and a lock for the title game in San Antonio. A great many Angelenos know that UCLA is 8-2, #12th in the country, and is building on a young defense. But do you know about Thousand Oaks, the Loyola Marymount of college football?
Last year TOU put an unprecedented eight players on the NCAA's All-Frosh team with a pass-happy offense, a brash young coach, and a big bowl game win over Utah State. This year, they are even better, if that can be believed. TOU's only losses this season are to abovementioned UCLA and #19 Syracuse. They own big wins versus Riverside, Marshall, and Fresno State, and are looking to climb the ladder even further.
"We'd play SC tomorrow," said head coach Billy Adair. "After what Georgia did to us a few years back we aren't scared of any of these big names. Hell, most of my players competed and beat their players in high school."
After a 41-16 win at Stcokton this Saturday, 3-8 Bakersfield comes into town next week.

1000 Oaks Seeks 2nd Bowl W
Corpus Christi, TX (AP) - The highly unconventional pass-happy play of tiny TOU takes on Middle Tennessee State in tonight's Guinness Bowl. TOU, 9-2 this year, is looking for the first ten win season in school history and it's second consecutive Guinness Bowl victory. MTSU, 8-3, utilizes a power running game that was effective in a 30-27 over the California League's Bakersfield, a team TOU dispatched 41-14 two weeks ago.
TOU is led by QB Karl Buchanan, who needs 209 yards to break the NCAA season passing record he set last season and DE Jerome Swafford, currently tied for 6th in the nation with 16 sacks.
ESPN pregame will begin at 7:30 EST.

Cantu (3 TD's), Buchanan lead way over Blue Raiders
Corpus Christi, TX (AP) - Amazing sophomore QB Karl Buchanan broke his own single season passing record with 482 yards as TOU triumphed in the Guinness Bowl Wednesday night 27-21. Tim Cantu caught all three of Buchanan's touchdown passes while fellow wide reciever Stan Lyon snagged nine passes for 198 yards.
Buchanan's new mark of 5,101 passing yards broke the previous record he set as a freshman by 273 yards. With this victory, TOU head coach Billy Adair improves his career record to 25-12.

Subject: Coaching Opportunity
Dear Coach,
We at the University of Missouri have been most impressed with your performance at Thousand Oaks University. Over the past three years, our Tigers have gone 20-14 with a bowl win last December, a very impressive mark in the Big 12. I believe that you are the man to take Mizzou to the next level and would welcome the opportunity to discuss this matter further.
Please contact me at your earliest convienence.
Go Tigers!

Rod and Carlos Snyder walk into Cowboys, a dimly lit bar about a mile from the stadium where they see me, about seven empty shot glasses, and a sheet of paper on my table.
"Billy, we have got to talk about this, right now." began Snyder. "The answer is no, no, and no. There is no way you can leave with the group of players we have now."
"And the Mizzou alumni would eat a young guy like you alive if the team struggles, especially in a state with football mad cities like St Louis and Kansas City." Rod chips in. "You've got to stay a little longer or take a lower profile job, if you're that intent on leaving. The Big 12? You're crazy."
The waitress brings three shots of Patron 3G's to the table.
I take a deep breath. "Guys, I'm really hamstrung with Rachel though. No recruiting outside the state? No trips out of the Pacific Time Zone? And sooner or later she's going to find out that I didn't cut Preston like she told me."
"Why not go to Hawaii?" All three of us turn our heads at Mandy the waitress. "Hawaii may not be in the Pacific Time Zone, but you can't get more into the Pacific, right?"
The TOC coaching braintrust explodes into laughter.
"She's got a point," I say. "I'll give this place another year."
The empty shot glasses hit the table with a resounding thud, as did my ass when I slipped off the stool onto the floor.

"Billy? We need to talk."
Great. Now this is where I learn that we can't leave greater Los Angeles to play this season.
"Why didn't you take the Missouri job?"
"Uhhh, well, I couldn't let these guys down, especially since we're returning virtually everyone from a 10-2 team. We could make a run at a major bowl if Kurt can hold up."
"That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. You turned down a Big 12 school to stay here? What the hell is wrong with you?"
"Call it my conscience. Or whatever. Besides, who else would you have coach this team, this offense? I'm the best fit right here, and I'd have to adapt at Mizzou. No thanks."
"This will go down as one of the dumbest moves in this school's history."
"Well, then don't renew my contract. Or fire me. I'm a hot commodity, remember?"
I slammed the door on the way out. I see Rod sitting on a couch outside the AD office, apparently waiting his turn to face Hurricane Rachel.
"Rod, take the damn lei off before going in, OK?"

According to Saul Goldman, publicity director for the magazine, McKnight was offered $15,000 for the shoot, with the understanding that the photos may appear in any issue for the next ten years. The magazine will pay her an additional $20,000 for use of the photos.
"We are big fans of Thousand Oaks in general and the California League in particular," said Goldman. "Many gentlemen around the country want to see art in this context, and as always we are happy to oblige."

"And with that, I hereby resign as athletic director at this great university. I appreciate all of the support I have recieved over the last couple of days. Thank you. President Rivera?"
A crushed Rachel McKnight sits next to me on the stage at the press conference, thoughtfully held in the gymnasium where Rachel led the TOC volleyball team to three seasons without a victory.
"Rachel, I can save your ass, but we need to get a few things straight. Right now."
"WHAT?"
"Listen to me. The travel and scouting restrictions are gone immediately. You get more seats in my stadium. And you pay me like a major college football coach, and my staff too. I'll work with you on the academic standards, but we need more leeway."
"Fine, but how the hell..."
"Hey Lennie, can I say a couple of words?"
Dr. Leonard Rivera glares at his young football coach, namely me, but steps away from the mike.
"Folks, we're just a bunch of kids with some skeletons in the closet. Ms. McKnight made a mistake when she was an undergrad. Big deal."
The Nabisco Center is absolutely silent.
"There's something bigger at stake here. This university. Me and my staff are trying to put this place we love on the map with our football team, and without Ms. McKnight, it's a much longer road. She's a local girl, came to the school on an athletic scholarship, and has never left, working her way up the ladder."
I said that entire statement without rolling my eyes once.
"If you let her just quit like this, you're showing me just how much you think of our athletic department, our school, and our future. So I tell you this: if Rachel goes, I'm out the door right behind her. I'm 27 years old with two bowl wins, a ten win season, and the most prolific passing offense in the country."
I take a deep breath, thinking of my parents in Birmingham watching this on ESPN later and wondering if I'd lost my mind.
"You keep Rachel McKnight, and together we'll put this place on the map. That I promise you."
I sit down as the arena explodes in noise.
"You owe me at least a bottle, maybe two. We have some issues to iron out, boss."
"You got it, Billy."

REDEMPTION
1000 Oaks looks to pay back 'Cuse
Thousand Oaks (AP) - TOU head coach Billy Adair's team has clinched the CL title, beaten ranked opponents such as Riverside, Sacramento, and Marshall, and are near the top of the NCAA's in every passing category. He's stood up for his embattled Athletic Director, gotten his team in the Top 20 in the country, and played #10 Cal within a touchdown for his 17th ranked 9-1 squad.
But he hasn't beaten Syracuse.
The Orange at 6-4 would like nothing better than to get a win over a highly ranked program and vault into the bowl picture, but Adair wants this game. Badly. "Once we show we can beat major programs consistently, we can start garnishing the national respent we're seeking. Defeating Syracuse will go a long way toward that."
Thousand Oaks is a five point favorite.

I'm wearing a ill-fitting suit I borrowed from Rod as I sit with Carlos Snyder and Rachel McKnight in the back row of the Downtown Athletic Club in New York. Many eyes are on Karl Buchanan, who threw for over 4900 yards and 47 TD's this last season. Even the LA Times listed him as a darkhorse.
"And the Heisman Trophy goes to..."
I close my eyes and make a wish. Rachel chartered a plane for us to get here, for Christ's sake. Pleasepleasepleaseplease.
"...Jeremy Marsh, quarterback of the national champion Florida Gators!"
The hall erupts while I look at Rachel and Carlos and shrug. Karl wound up finishing third behind Marsh and LSU's Ross Richmond, but both of the other guys are seniors.
"The bar's downstairs, Coach," said Carlos. "You guys coming?"

Well, we got the schedule we wanted for this year. Week Two, UAB comes to town. I found out that Rachel scheduled them as a gift for accepting my contract offer. Since we didn't beat them last time we squared off, I'm really anxious to show Coach Sanders how we do things now that the team has played with my offense for a while.
Marshall comes to town the following week. We haven't really had a problem with them the last couple of years, but they're always dangerous and a win will definitely help our weak strength of schedule.
Sacramento and Riverside are both ranked above us in the offseason polls, and we have to go on the road to both. Both should be awfully tough.
We close out the season with back to back trips to #22 Syracuse and #13 UCLA. I love this idea and our fans message board seems to as well. If we're playing solid football before we head off to New York and get a road W, we'll have serious momentum going into the UCLA game. They don't own the town anymore, especially after the reemergence of USC, but we still owe them a fight after last season's game.
If we can match last season's record, I'll be pleased. But everyone else around here thinks we can run the table and maybe crack the BCS. I don't know about this right now, but with pretty much everyone returning this season, it has to be a possibility. Even with two opponents scheduled we've never defeated.

If you would have told me in August that the toughest stretch of our schedule would be going to #20 Sacramento, then hosting a 5-3 Bakersfield team, then a battle with #7 Riverside, I would have pointed at the season ending trips to UCLA and Syracuse and dismissed you as a fool.
Apparently I am wrong. We're actually a two point underdog to Sacramento this week, and I have another huge concern. We still haven't signed a QB to replace Buchanan. Junior Hunter Napier might be a bridge candidate, but we really need a stub QB to operate this system, and Napier hasn't even performed well in mop-up duty.

In a exciting Saturday night game in the state's capital, #11 TOU threw early, often, and for effect in a 43-30 CL League victory over #20 Sacramento. QB Karl Buchanan once again showed the form that has made him the leading passer in collegiate history, throwing for 540 yards and 5 TD's. Thousand Oaks, now 6-0 (4-0 CL), welcomes 5-4 (1-3 CL) Bakersfield to town next Saturday before a huge game with #7 Riverside.

CL Titans Ready To Square Off
#5 Riverside, #9 1000 Oaks to battle
Two newly dominant, undefeated teams will square off in a top ten battle in the California League, of all places. 9-0 Riverside, ranked 5th in the nation, welcomes #9 Thousand Oaks, now 7-0. Even with a three game losing streak to TOU, Riverside head coach Bryan Kincaid sounded confident in this game outcome.
"We're 9-0 already," said Kincaid, who has a 44-12 record at Riverside. "I'm confident we can handle that offense this time around. A lot of our guys have been watching them air it out for four years already."
TOU coach Billy Adair thinks differently. "We've won seven in a row and seventeen dating to last season," Adair stated. "I'd hate to break it now, especially with so much at stake."
Kincaid and Adair share a mutual affection for each other, however. "I'm proud to see a young guy like Billy doing this well this early," said Kincaid of his 28 year old counterpart. "I was still washing jocks at Stanford at his age."
Adair looks at Kincaid as a role model. "Coach Kincaid came in with about the same talent we had four years ago, and won a bowl game when we couldn't even scrape up a winning record. Riverside is amazingly consistent and always shows up to play." Riverside has finished 9-3, 9-3, 8-3, and 9-3 since the program began Division I play in 2004.
Thousand Oaks is a five point underdog entering Saturday's nationally televised game from Riverside.

Four in a Row for 1000 Oaks
Throttles #5 Riverside 41-16 on Road
Los Angeles (AP) - Some habits die hard. Thousand Oaks showed as much in the young program's biggest win in history, a 41-16 whipping of archrival #5 Riverside (9-1, 5-1 CL). TOU, now 8-0 (6-0 CL) used a steady diet of Karl Buchanan's passing (538 yards); Stan Lyon, Tim Cantu, and Bart Morton receiving (all over 100 yards); and run stuffing (1.6 yards per carry) to stymie Riverside.
Thousand Oaks looks to continue it's winning streak, now at 18, when Stocktom comes to town next week. TOU finishes the regualr season with games at #11 UCLA and at Syracuse.

Buchanan's jersey retired
Karl Buchanan, the all time leading passer in NCAA history, had his number 17 jersey retired at halftime of Thousand Oaks' victory over Stockton Saturday. Buchanan, who's 19,464 yards through the air shattered the old record set by BYU's Ty Detmer, had led TOU to a 9-0 record this season and is 38-7 in his four years under center.
TOU is a seventeen point favorite at Syracuse next week. Syracuse, with victories over nationally ranked Tennessee and West Virginia, is 4-5 on the season.

TOU ROLLS OVER BRUINS
27-0 1st Q Too Much For UCLA to Handle
Los Angeles (AP) - Billy Adair's Thousand Oaks squad not only has a chance at the mythical Los Angeles championship after dispatching of #8 UCLA 44-19, they will now play in the Alamo Bowl against 2nd ranked USC (10-1) for the national championship. Karl Buchanan threw for only 370 yards and got picked off six times in the victory, but the TOU defense held the Bruins to only 280 yards and got five interceptions of their own.
"I'm just too proud of these guys," said an emotional Adair after the game. "They knew what they had to do and they did it." Adair has set a few records of his own after this game. Not only does his team own an undefeated regular season record for the first time in both school and California League history, he will become the youngest man at 28 by more than a decade to coach a national championship finalist.

Big Stink in the BCS
Central Florida, Florida Contemplating Lawsuits
Overland Park, KS (AP) - Central Florida is 11-0 this season, ranked sixth in the coaches poll and in the voters poll, and is sixth in the most recent BCS standings. Defending national champion Florida is 10-1 with a lone loss to #10 Tennessee, ranked first in both the coaches and fan polls, and is third in the BCS.
Both schools want to know one thing: How did mid-major Thousand Oaks, only ranked seventh in both polls, wind up in the natonal championship game?
In a press release by the NCAA here in Overland Park, the following is stated.
"We welcome Thousand Oaks University to the Alamo Bowl as the second ranked team in Division One football. They have victories over top ten teams Riverside and UCLA, both on the road. TOU has also defeated top 50 teams Sacramento and Marshall. With a total BCS score of 8.84, they only trail USC's 5.98 in the nation."
Florida's 10.97 and UCF's 16.25 are well behind both schools, but that is not deterring either university from strong words. "While Thousand Oaks is a great story, they are not the second ranked team in the nation. The CL is certainly an up and coming league, but not the Southeastern Conference. We plan to explore the possibility of legal action," said Florida AD Curtis Lowery. Central Florida will release a statement tomorrow.
Thousand Oaks Athletic Director Rachel McKnight and Head Coach Billy Adair refused to comment.

"On behalf of the Thousand Oaks University Athletic Department, I'd like to welcome the members of the Fourth Estate to our campus. Mr. Adair will be available for questions shortly."
"Ms. McKnight, Freddy Doyle of the Oregonian. Can you comment on yesterday's statement by Central Florida AD Cutter Starks?"
"**laugh**"
"Certainly. If you have a problem with the BCS decision, you can talk to them. Or UCF can accept our request for a game next year and we'll settle it then."
"Rachel, Vinnie D'Onofrio, LA Times. How can your team hope to compete with a juggernaut like Southern Cal?"
"Well, we handled UCLA pretty well on the road and USC lost to them at home. Coach Adair and I think we can play with anyone in the country. Next?"
"Ms. McKnight, Lonnie Sadler of the San Antonio Express-News. Can you comment on the University of Florida lawsuit?"
"Well, we hope that the federal court will look at our accomplishments in a fair and impartial manner. And Florida's. Personally, I think they should try and get past UCLA in the Coors Bowl before judging the strength of our team. One more, and then it's Billy's turn."
"Ma'am, Quinton Davis from the New York Post. Your quarterback, Karl Buchanan, has passed for more yards than any other man in NCAA history. What are his chances at a Heisman Trophy?"
"Pretty good, I'd guess. In eleven games this year, he's thrown for 5,345 yards and 59 touchdowns. Even in what your paper considers a gimmick offense, Mr. Davis, those stats and an undefeated record are pretty hard to ignore."

"Now it is my pleasure to introduce head coach Billy Adair of Thousand Oaks University."
"Thanks, Rachel. Who's first?"
"Coach, Tom Blight, Denver Post. Who is Billy Adair? How did you, at age 28, get to where you are?"
"Well Tom, I played tight end at UAB from 1997-2002. When I was redshirted as a sophomore, I started researching upcoming opponents with our scouting staff and realized that most schools in our conference would be ill-equipped to deal with a pass-happy offense. I tried to sell the concept to the coaching staff and didn't really have much luck. Bernard Wells liked what I had to say and gave me a shot."
"Billy, I'm Hannah Golden with the Birmingham Post-Herald. UAB went 3-8 with losses to five top 25 teams this season. There's a lot of pressure on the UAB athletic department to 'bring you home', so to speak. Any comments?"
"Right now I'm not interested. There's a good chance I never will be. But people change their minds. Mine is focused on Southern Cal."
"Coach Adair, Todd Nolan, Boston Herald. If you win the Sears Trophy, where do you go from there?"
"Hopefully right to a beach, Todd. I'll cross that bridge if I ever get to it."
"Sir? Jack Vivian, Kansas City Star. With all the talk about Karl Buchanan going in the top five of the NFL Draft, who's going to replace him?"
"That's a great question, Jack. We have a kid named Benny Rose coming in from Santa Ana in the fall. He and Hunter Napier will probably battle it out for the job. One more, and I have to go to practice."
"Coach, Erica Tharp from the Orange County Register. Will you be back next season?"
"**laugh** I plan on it, ma'am. Someone will have to make a helluva offer even to get my attention at this point. Thanks everyone."

Kinsella & Trojans get 2nd national title over 1000 Oaks
Record-setting Buchanan held to only 274 yds passing
San Antonio, TX (AP) - The Battle of Los Angeles may not have a clear-cut winner, but the University of Southern California has the hardware to claim that they're the best team in all the land after a 29-22 victory over Thousand Oaks Monday night.
USC (11-1), who lost to a UCLA team that 1000 Oaks beat in their quest for regional superiority, used a focused pass defense and a ball control offense to drop TOU (11-1), who had won their previous 22 games dating to the 2007 season.
Junior RB Willie Joe of USC carried the ball 45 times for 168 yards and was named Alamo Bowl MVP. Senior QB Karl Buchanan of Thousand Oaks finished his career with 20,457 yards passing and 190 touchdowns, both NCAA records.

I'm sitting with Carlos, Rachel, and Rod at Durty Nelly's, a bar in downtown San Antonio, drowning our sorrows after the loss.
"We had 'em, guys. We shoulda won that damn game," I slur.
"Billy, ease up. We weren't ever supposed to be here, remember? Small school, big dreams,", said Rachel.
Everyone laughs. "Billy, ferchristssake, you shouldn't even be a coordinator yet at your age and you just coached, and nearly won, the goddamn NCAA title!" said Carlos.
I wobble to my feet. "Age has nothing to do with the fact that we just lost the game, Carlos."
"Rod, go get Billy another drink, will ya?"
Rod gets up, and Carlos speaks. "Listen, Billy. You cannot start feeling sorry for yourself now. You are the face of this program, and you are going to be on every damn network in the country in the next month. The press loves you, not me and definitely not Rachel."
"Carlos is right. We need you now more than ever. You think we can handle all this hoopla? Rivera would throw us out to the wolves."
Carlos continues, "You can tie one on tonight and we'll handle the morning press conference. Stomach flu is my early guess. But as soon as we touch down at LAX it's back on your shoulders, boss."
Rod comes back with four shots of Patron. "We're not going to let our fearless leader drink alone, are we?"
We raise the new glasses. "To the program!" I say.
"Screw the program, this is to us, for us. Let's get back here sooner rather than later."
The TOU braintrust clinks glasses and pours down more tequila.

The first thing I noticed was how much better our seats were this year than last year at the Downtown Athletic Club. USC head coach JJ Kinsella, who beat us for the national title, is sitting on my right in the third row. Rachel is sitting on the left.
I'm actually wearing my own suit this year. Karl looks pretty comfortable up on the stage next to guys like OU's Lionel Kumar and Florida's Allen Hawkins. Then again, next time I see a guy with 60 TD passes in a season he should be here.
"And the Heisman Trophy goes to..."
No wishing this year. I know better.
"Karl Buchanan, quarterback, Thousand Oaks University!"
Rachel hugs me as we jump up and yell. JJ shakes our hands. Karl looks like he won the New York state lottery as he accepts congratulations from the other finalists.
This year does end on a high note, after all.

Three Star Picks:
*** #21 Sacramento (4-1, 2-0 CL) @ #10 Thousand Oaks (5-0, 2-0 CL) -17
The local California League isn't the soft mid-major she was four years ago. Last year's national finalist Thousand Oaks has a gaudy resume with victories over Ohio State, Marshall, and UAB, while Sacto owns victories over #14 Kansas State and Hawaii.
Satco will have a tough time shutting down freshman QB Benny Rose, who has 2,764 yards passing in his first five collegiate starts along with 30 TD's.
Four units on Thousand Oaks -17.

TOU Crushes Sacramento
Rose passes for 666 yards, 7 TD's in romp
Thousand Oaks, CA (AP) - This season, Sacramento has usurped struggling Riverside for top challenger in the California League to TOU, winners of 26 straight conference matchups. Can the do what Riverside hasn't done in four years, and themselves have never done?
They'll have to wait at least a little longer.
#10 Thousand Oaks scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to overcome a game Sacramento squad 52-27 Saturday. Benny Rose continued his torrid passing with 666 yards, and five different TOU recievers had over 100 yards recieving. TOU (6-0, 3-0 CL) travels to 1-5 Anaheim next week.

Battle of Undefeateds
Thousand Oaks, CA (AP) - #9 Thousand Oaks (7-0) will face its stiffest challenge of the season whey they welcome #11 Syracuse (6-0), who is looking for another notch in their belts after knocking off #21 Tennessee, #17 Boston College, and #8 Louisville.
Benny Rose, TOU's freshman QB, has thrown for 3,861 yards and 42 TD's already this season, leading the nation in both categories by a comfortable margin. Twenty of those TD's have gone to WR Tim Cantu, who's TD receptions and yards (1,240) both lead the NCAA. DT Leslie Meadows is third in the country in sacks with 14.5.
TOU has defeated Syracuse three straight times and leads the overall series 3-2.

Remember last year, when we were ranked eighth in the country and still made the title game? And Florida protested, and Rachel and I dismissed their claim?
Well folks, TOU is in a real strange situation regarding the Gators and the BCS one more time. #2 Florida this season is 10-0, with games against Vandy and the SEC championship game still, and have a BCS score of 9.98.
TOU, on the other hand, is also 10-0, with one game remaining in the regualr season against 2-8 Bakersfield. Our BCS score is 10.08 and we're ranked third in both polls.
Usually this would add up to a clash in the title game of massive proportions. But #1 Notre Dame has a vise grip on the #1 BCS spot with an unreal 3.38. They've beaten Michigan, Michigan State, Southern Cal, Virginia Tech, and BYU, all ranked in the top 25. The Irish have games against UConn and BC left.
There's a really good chance that we might get stuck on the outside looking in this year, and we're afterthoughts when the country is salivating for a Notre Dame - Florida title game.

BCS DEBACLE!
TOU sent to Coors Bowl despite 11-0 record
Thousand Oaks, CA (AP) - Forgive Thousand Oaks head coach Billy Adair if he's a little upset with the BCS this season. "We were robbed," said Adair. "This is a humiliating experience for this team, this school, and this conference."
TOU finished the pre-bowl season with an 11-0 record; victories over ranked teams Ohio State, Syracuse, Riverside, and Sacramento; and a final BCS score of 11.63. #1 Notre Dame has a 4.16 and #2 Florida rates a 9.57.
Adair believes that the CL's weak reputation was the death knell for his squad. "People forget that we have three teams in the top 25, and that's not my fault," said a visibly angry Adair. "We played and beat everyone we lined up against, and our alleged conference strength is keeping up out of the Big Game. That's totally unfair. Go see if Florida could beat us, Sacto, and Riverside in the same season. Heck, they even ducked my schedule request for this year."
Adair is referring to the CL's bottom four teams, all ranked lower than #110.
#12 Georgia Tech is a team that Adair would love to face under any other circumstance, a 10-1 ACC powerhouse whose sole loss was to Virginia Tech 10-9.

Frustrated 1000 Oaks Burns GA Tech
Preston/Cantu/Lucas - 27 receptions, 463 yds, 7 TD's
Denver, CO (AP) - As the best Thousand Oaks can finish this season is second, they sure did it in grand fashion. Benny Rose passed for 513 yards and 6 TD's as TOU knocked off Georgia Tech 56-27, giving the team it's first undefeated season.
"I think this program has arrived," said TOU coach Billy Adair. "We've played for the national championship, gone undefeated, haven't lost in conference in four years or so, and have our names all over the NCAA record book." Adair, at 29, is already 57-14 as a head coach and is rumored to be in the running for a major program's job. He turned down Missouri previously.
Adair will say adios to three of the greatest recievers in program history: Irv Preston, Jack Reed, and Tim Cantu. Cantu caught 117 passes this season for 2,382 yards and 32 TD's. Reed had 212 catches in his career, Cantu 318, and Preston 264.

We're sitting in our third row seats at the Downtown Athletic Club, this time with former winner Karl Buchanan, who is in his first season with the Chicago Bears. He hasn't played yet this year, and is looking forward to going to Europe in the spring. We have a new twist this visit, though. Benny Rose and Tim Cantu are both on stage waiting for the announcement. Carlos passes me his flask and I take a deep swallow, hopefully unnoticed.
I voted for Tim. Benny has three seasons left to get hardware.
"And the Heisman Trophy goes to..."
"C'mon, Timmy," I mutter under my breath.
"Leonard Hitchcock, quarterback, University of Northern Illinois!"
Tim looks crushed. 117 catches and 30 TDs, and still no love? I feel his pain. Maybe I can talk Rachel into retiring his jersey next season.
"Bar's this way, kids," Carlos slurrs as we pour out of the auditorium.

Notes from this season:
Florida ripped Notre Dame 41-17 for the national title. We did finish 2nd for the second consecutive year.
Benny Rose is voted top offensive frosh in the country.
I decided that I'm going to at least look around this offseason. Unless it's truly a job I can't pass up, I'm staying.
