W and BR like it, OB may or may not I dunno. BF and GW both like it, tho GW is a bit of an ass. BR#2 went to a bowling festival in kentucky last summer inspired by the movie.

The movie is sensational. By far my favorite and most quoted movie.

I agree, one of my favorites but I cant believe the split...I just never knew that some people think it is awful. I just think the story and the dialogue and the way everything interconnects is wonderful. Im still in shock that soo many people dont like it.

For me it is like a lot of cult movies. If I saw them before they became cult favorites, like Office Space, then I love it. But for movies like the Bog Lebowski my friends kept telling me how great it was so I went in with unreasonable expectations. I think I probably would have liked it a little if I just ran into it on cable, but after all the hype I have to admit it was very disappointing. (see also Rasing Arizona)

Big Lebowski isn't bad but it doesn't hold a candle to Oh Brother Where Art Thou?, The Man Who Wasn't There, or Raising Arizona.

Ditto. My roommate talked this movie up to godlike levels... by the time I saw it the movie had zero chance of living up to expectations. I didn't find it entertaining at all.

I'm firmly in the "great" crowd.

I thought it was boring and pretty lame the first time I saw it, then I saw it again and laughed pretty hard, and I've seen it about 20x since then and loved it.

Walter is one of the all time great characters in film, with The Jesus in the running as well.

The Big Lebowski is one of few movies that takes multiple viewings to fully appreciate. The characters are so particular that the first time through it takes a while to pick up on what makes them work and be funny. I didn't realize how funny the early scenes were until I had watched it a second time. "Donny, you're out of your element!"

it really does get funnier with each viewing. only film i know that does that.

Agreed completely, although I wouldn't say that it's the only film like that, but it is certainly a prime example, in my opinion.

The first time I saw it, I thought it was mediocre and vastly overrated. I've seen it about six or seven times since then, though, and I honestly do laugh more and more each time.

Maybe it does get more funny, but I'm firmly in the "It's Ass" camp.

I actually think a lot of movies are like that for me, especially the more intelligent comedies. My enjoyment of a lot of Woody Allen movies increases the more times I watch them (ex. Bullets over Broadway).

Another one that I recently watched again is Wag the Dog. I've seen it many times, but I find a lot more of the subtle humor the more I watch it.

Two more for me: L.A. Story and Defending Your Life

These are just ones I can think of off the top of my head, probably because I watched them again recently.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that one. I would definitely agree. I saw it the first time in the theatre and found it a tad painful. I've seen it about twenty times since and love it now. :)
