Woohoo, I found a job!

After nearly a year of unemployment, 10 months exactly, I found a job today!

I got a call back from a company i'd interviewed with a couple of weeks ago, and the answer was positive! I'd called earlier today and had gotten no response, so I was starting to think it was just another dead end... Needless to say, I'm ecstatic right now!

Furthermore, I'd started a training course a couple of monthes ago, and I was ready to drop out to start my new job but my future boss actually wants me to finish it first, so i'm a winner on both accounts... :D

If i don't get an answer after 2 weeks, then I either call or email to know what's up (unless I 'm specifically instructed otherwise by the interviewer of course)

One thing i'm thankful for though is our social protection system. Even though i was unemployed for those 10 months, I was still getting paid 70% of my previous salary by the unemployment office. (And if truth be told, because I had a pretty good salary in my previous job, I was actually making more money than I will be making in my new job..., which is pretty stupid but there you go...).

She got laid off before getting enough hours to be eligible for unemployment, after coming back from her maternity leave. While I still have my job, a reasonable wage and all, we're in no way making both ends meet with her not having a job...

Now I know this doesn't happen often, but a friend of mine interviewed at a really nice Financial Firm in Denver to be an investment banker. It took them 6 months to get back to him. He thought he wasn't getting that job, so he applied for Grad school in the mean time, and then they randomnly called him 6 months later, after he was already enrolled in school.

Thanks Brian et all. I sent a thank you letter the minute I got home, but I was leery of calling and seeming to pushy, yet I know that you want people to know that you are interested in their position. I think I'll give them a call, thanks!

Dola...I feel for all of those out of work looking for jobs. Thankfully I still have a job, but the stress of job hunting is incredible. If I were out of work, I wouldn't be much fun to be around! Good luck to all!

It always pisses me off that my brother, with a high school diploma, had a job thus qualified for $600 every 2 weeks on the dole (and mooched it for the entire year that he was "entitled" to), yet me with my BS in physics and MS in aerospace engineering doesn't qualify because school (even grad school) isn't work.

That is a lot different than over here. When my company closed back in 2001, right after Sept. 11th, I went from $120,000 per year to unemployment in California of $235 per week. :( That was a LONG six months until the next job came along.

Hmmm...when I was out of work before Pennsylvania only would pay for unemployment 6 months out of any 12 month period. Unfortunately, I used up my whole 6 months before I found a job. However...it REALLY helped out - I was getting about $1800 a month, from what I remember. Judging from Cartman, California is a lot different than Pennsylvania.

I would be curious what kind of % a French worker puts towards taxes (all of federal/state/city) vs an American of equivalent stature.

The US tax wedge is basically 31% while the French tax wedge is roughly 48%. (Belgium was the "winner" with 56% of an average workers earnings going to the government.)

Funny you mention Lockheed, I'm having a nightmare of a time with them right now.

I got an email awhile ago saying they'd seen my resume from a career fair, and wanted to schedule an on-campus (UMD) interview, and that to sign up for the interview I needed to go to UMD's Career Center website and register. Through some stupid glitch in that system (even though I have my MS, it likes to tell me I can't apply because the requirement is for a BS..which I also have, but it seems to be looking at my most recent degree or something), I never could register for an on-campus interview.

I tried emailing their HR (from the website) to no avail, I've sort of decided that I'm not interesting enough for them to be bothered with (which I doubt on a technical level, but sometimes in this industry having a MS hurts more than it helps). I'll certainly drop a resume again if I ever get the chance, but at the same time, with no number to reach the HR by or any real direct contacts, I've brushed up LMCO as a lost cause (their loss).

Yeah, rough is the word. Yesterday was the day she had her interview and that was only one interview and she was drained last night... The first few weeks were just here thinking she was good for nothing, wouldn't be able to ever get a job... Don't know about you, but to people critical of their work (like she and I are) finding yourself out of a job is even tougher...

I've been telling her, over and over, that she's got what it takes to be successful in whatever she'll put her heart into. To which she sometimes replies (but less and less, I think I'm winning ;) ) that I've never worked with her. But crap, I've been living with you for 12 years darn it! While telling her all that, I work with people who've been working at the same freaking place, earning good money since they've been here for 20+ years and they god damn don't have aclue what it would be like outside of these walls. They go "you do this and you do that, it's not my job, because it's not in the work procedures and yadda, yadda, yadda"...

And you're also right, we need to learn something when going through these tougher periods in our lives. Glad you feel like you've learned from it... Hopefully, my wife will come out of it a better person...
