View Full Version : Does this annoy you?

It's really starting to annoy me that announcers and pundits in general compare players exclusively within their race. Whenever there's a white point guard who is a proficient passer, they always say something to the effect of: "Man this kid's game reminds me of Stockton or Steve Nash". If the same player was black, they'd say Isaiah Thomas or Mark Jackson. You would never hear Micheal Vick compared to as Steve Young, even though they are similar players. An announcer would be more likely to compare Vick to Cunningham, even though Vick is a lefty and runs the west coast offense.
Has anyone else noticed this? Should it even bug me?

What's worse to me is when people say something like "He's the white Mike Vick!" or "He's the black O.J. Simpson!" oops. sorry. I forgot for a second that OJ became black again the second he killed a white woman...

Gilbert Brown reminds me of that wide lady in the mall.

I've noticed it, but it doesn't bother me. I think when people say those types of things, it makes them sound ignorant, sure, but there are lots of ignorant people, and people say lots of ignorant things. I feel rather indifferent about it.

RFUS, I'd say it probably isn't worth worrying about, and here's why ... as a matter of practicality, I imagine the cross-racial reference is avoided in order to avoid having someone point out the rather obvious difference in race (which I'd say is about a 100% chance of happening).

I dunno. Did Young give someone an STD? Maybe if he did, you would have a better argument. :)

I hate the whole compare thing period. I don't think Mcnabb is the next anything but Mcnabb, not Cunningham not Jawarski he is Mcnabb and will re remembered for what he does on the field. Maybe i am wierd but i don't need some guy who played a generation earlier to identify with a player who is playing today. I don't look at Tom Brady and think wow he reminds me of Joe Montana. I don't look at Ben Rosenberger and think wow he reminds me of Bradshaw. Bradshaw was Bradshaw, Montana was Montana, Elway was Elway. Every play has his own legacy.

I wonder if that real Ron Mexico will be calling himself Mike Vick now.

I think people use comparisons because they lack the imagination to describe someone using adjectives.
