The landscape is changing as City of Villains is on the horizon and PvP (player vs. player) is on the test server and soon to be delivered unto the masses.
A new era is dawning as only a few of us remain. Our own fellowship is crumbling at the very foundation. What will be in store for our heroes?

Kieran and Gwain (me) cancelled his account as being a tanker = slow exp wait around for a group, simply put i wasn't around same time as the other fofcers so the monthly fee wasn't worth it to me. I really wish i worked a later shift sometimes.
I play alot on the Test server. What is the FOF server of choice?

Bonegavel and I are on Victory. I have:
Silver Streak, Level 50 Electric/Electric Blaster
Sweet Bubbles, Level 38 Force Field/Energy Defender
White Napalm, Level 17 Fire/Fire Tank
Sweet Sugar, Level 12 Peacebringer
Just add us to your friends. From what I read on the official forums, they may allow the Character Copy Tool to copy characters from more than your server to the test server. Don't know if that will be in Issue 4 or not.

I (Cometflash) am back on COH for the time being after long flirtations with EQ2 and WOW. (still playing WOW) Still having the same damn frequent mapserver problems that drove me away from the game in the first place in frustration though so I'm not of much use to anyone. Blue Boltman and Plinth are mine as well.
I'm definitely hanging around until City of Villians, just may not be logging in on a consistent basis until then. The good news is that Cometflash doesn't have to go through &*(!^&^% Terra Volta now to get a respec as he still has the "freebie" they apparantly gave out after I left. (How do I go about getting that?)

Carl Bistro is retired, I guess. I don't really have any urge to renew my subscription. I liked the concept of the game, but it just never fully clicked with me. I do wish all of the remaining players the best of luck, however!

MxO is extremely frustrating. Interface is very cumbersome. I am thinking about a return appearance when CoV comes out. WoW doesn't really interest me. CoH is still the best MMORG in my opinion.

I cancelled my account because I couldn't justify the $15/month when I was only finding time to play once or twice a month.
If I find that my evenings open back up I would like to re-join, but for not that just ain't possible...

Same with me- its hard to pay $15 when I was only able to play a few times a month...I am really looking forward to City Of Villians. Does anyone have any idea of when that will be coming out?

FWIW, I had trouble with my internet connection last night and it's still out. Unfortunately, I can't play at work, so I'm going to have to fix it hopefully at lunch.
Also, you cannot cancel your account online for MxO. You must call a 1-800 number. I find it funny since they are violating their own EULA.

Cannot get into MxO. Good to hear about the 800 number. I'm canceling soon as i stop being lazy about it.
After playing CoH for a year, the way MxO functions isn't up to my MMO standards. City has raised the bar for me as far as character movement/controls and shit like that.
Sorry to hear about your online troubles RA. I figured something was up when you didn't show back up last night. You were my Mentor and I was wondering why i was only doing 5 damage. :)
700k away from 47 with Albino Claw. After 50, i'm spending time with my tank and controller. They are nerfing the be-fucking-jesus out of regen this next issue and I will probably shelf the Claw at 50.
Is Don still around?!? Hoopsguy!? Miss ya big man.

dola, funny that all our folks that were GMs have quit. Only me and Raiders Army remain.

COH.game->quit = 1;

Still around, hoping to free some hours up now that the NCAA tournament is over. Work continues to be really, really busy and every non-work hour was devoted to following the Illini over the last three weeks. I'll show up one of these night; have not cancelled the account.
I'll make an appearance again as well. Probably will pick up CoV.

If everyone would gravitate back to CoH that would be grande!!!
I am not overly fond of the "other" folks in the "new" Super Group (with the exception of Penolope and maybe Gamma Rae).
RA and I are thinking about splitting off and only having the 2 of us as GMs since we are pretty determined to stay for the long haul. Having a person of GM status quiting without exiting the SuperGroup is a quick way to clog the SG list without recourse.
I've always loved Penolope. I count her as one of my friends from that game. She will do anything for you if you ask her.

Can you solo in the higher levels? I played for a while, but I hate grouping. Occasionally it can be fun, but I mostly like playing when I have the time. I don't like feeling that I'm "falling behind" or dependent on other people to play.

It's not the same without the old gang.
Even if you just logged in for a minute to get rid of the "568 days since last logged on" status. :)
Seriously though, between your Ilinniniiilini in the title hunt, work, home life, and just general boredom with the game I figured you had packed it in. Good to see there may still be hope left for Don to once again cast his 3rd eye gaze upon Paragon City.

I'll echo those sentiments, and to your question, yes, it is very soloable in the higher levels. At levels 45-49, I played for about an hour each morning in PI and gained a bub per hour. In the evenings it was different because hunting wasn't as good, but that's when I looked for a team.

For me, I hate soloing in the later stages of the game, but it is VERY do-able. Of course, different builds will solo differently.
High Level Fire-tanks are MACHINES! for leveling. Other Tankers level like Turtles Fucking regardless of level.
High Level Controllers with Pets are MACHINES!
High Level Blasters (electricity, fire especially) are MACHINES! but be prepared to die a lot as you are very fragile until very late game. Silver Streak (elec/elec) can wrack up impressive numbers when solo.
High Level Scrappers (DM, SPINES especially) are Very Hardy but lack of AoE (except Spines) can make the going slower than the AoE blasters, but you die less.
If you don't like grouping you most likely aren't a Defender and they are very reliant on teaming even though they can still solo their share.
I'd say a lot of it can also be related to experience because I used to think lower levels were so hard but going back to my lower level characters it seems easier because i have a more intimate knowledge of the game.

Fire/Fire is a powerleveling machine if you can work it. I was moving right along with White Napalm, but the biggest jumps in xp gains were at level 18 (got burn) and 22 (SOs). That's so far. Right now, I can stand in the middle of 6 same level guys and just burn them. They do little damage to me and burn doesn't require much end. I should get 24 tonight, but Survivor and the Apprentice are on.
Been a tough week at work. Pain Cry and Mind Cry will not be able to arrest evil-doers till friday.

Raiders Army, if you don't mind i have a level 5 elec/elec blaster (littlewatt)
you mind posting what you would recommand as a build?
any do and don't and how to avoid getting killed solo?
here is my current plan you can call me an idiot just let me know why :)
1-lighting bolt
1-electric fence
2-charged bolts
4-ball lighting
6-hover
8-hasten
10-aim
12-zapp
14-superspeed
16-hurdle
18-health
20-stamina
22-build up
24-stealth
26-tesla cage
28-short circuit
30-grant invisiability
32-thunderous blast
35-power sink
38-shocking grasp
41-phase shift
44-voltic sentinal
47-lighting clap
49-swift
(i didn't make this up i got it from a messageboard)
i like the stalth + superspeed combo should allow to get off a short circuit+power sink, which leaves most non boss types without endurance, right?
tesla cage+shocking grasp is supposed to be able to hold a boss
I noticed there is no conserve power in the build which i thought was like the best thing since sliced bread (acourding to what i have read) is it not an option or should i get it, or is endurance not an issue for an elec/elec blaster with power sink?
Raiders Army

My condolences on your many deaths to date and many more to follow. ;)
The build I would use is:
1-Charged Bolts-Accx2,Dmgx4
1-Electric Fence-Acc
2-Lightning Bolt-Accx2,Dmgx4
4-Ball Lightning-Accx2,Dmgx4
6-Hasten-Rechargex6
8-Aim-Rechargex6
10-Hurdle-Jumping
12-Zapp-Accx2, Dmgx4
14-Super Speed-Spd, End Reduction
16-Health-Health
18-Build Up-Rechargex6
20-Stamina-End Recx6
22-Stealth-End Red
24-Short Circuit-End Drainx6
26-Invisibility-End Red
28-Phase Shift-End Red
30-Hover-Fly Spd
32-Thunderous Blast-Accx2, Rechargex4
35-Power Sink-End Drainx6
38-Fly-Fly spd, End Reduction
41-Repulsion Field-End Reduction
44-Temp Invulnerability-Dam Resistx5, End Reduction
47-Force of Nature-Dam Resistx2, Rechargex4
49-Shocking Grasp-Accx2, Dmgx2
The powers I don't consider worth getting are Grant Invis (you need to worry about yourself), Voltaic Sentinel (it's a pet, but I respecced it out), and Lightning Clap (never used it, so take it for what it's worth). Starting at level 41, you can get the epic powersets, of which Temp Invulnerability is the best (you become much less squishy). Force of Nature is good as well, and you can actually tank. I would take Repulsion Field over the Personal Force Field because you have Phase Shift.
You want to use Thunderous Blast as much as possible on big groups so the recharges are good there. Don't worry about end, as Power Drain will come back quickly with Perma-Haste. I bolded the "essential" powers that you need to get (at least according to me). In the lower levels, I would get Stealth to work with Super Speed so you'll be invisible to most mobs. Hurdle is also a good power to get out of the Fitness powerset since you want to get Haste and Superspeed (this will allow you some vertical play in travel).
Power Sink with six-slotted End Drain SOs will drain a boss of your level. You'll need to use Short-Circuit to get bosses of higher levels. The only mobs your End Drain will not work on are Monsters and Arch Villians. Hope this helps a little. This is not by any means a "textbook" build, but it is the one that I find to be the most efficient.
Raiders Army
04-15-2005, 10:34 AM
Dola, also remember that you have respecs at 24, 34, and 44. You might want to play with your build so that it provides the most offense and defense at level 15.
For example, you might want to take fly as your travel power at level 14 instead of super speed. Why? Well, hasten doesn't do much for you (IMHO) when you have to worry about endurance requirements. Once you get Stamina six-slotted, you don't have to worry as much about endurance. Respec out fly for Super Speed at the level 24 respec.
Also, have a healer with you. :)

This actually isn't always the best thing. In all seriousness, I died far more with an empath than without. I always assumed that they would heal me, but sometimes it didn't work out that way. I think that psychologically, knowing you have a safety net, you take more risks than you would normally.

We finished up that mission and then hunted on the streets for a bit before someone trained some level 20's on us and getting Doubleneck killed. Still, it was good fun and good exp.
I returned later with the Professor and knocked off a couple door missions. I leveled to 16, got my travel power (teleport) and first title (The Startling Professor Ion!) and netting my first DO for finishing a vaz mission.

Levels are 12-15, which was a nasty little surprise for me. I had to exemplar down to take the mission. We weren't able to finish the mission because one of the clowns in the pickup mission dropped, thus killing the person who was exemped to them. No full party of eight = no mission.
Here is everything that I know about it at this point:
1.) Need full party of eight
2.) Levels must be between 12-15. So at least four in the party must be at the right level range to do this and exemp four others.
3.) Timed mission - think it was 90 minutes.
4.) Foes we saw were bigger groups, level 15-16 and a lot of them.
5.) Invis and teleport are really key for getting everyone to the obelisks in 2nd part of mission. Not a lot of action this way, but probably the best chance for success within timed mission.
So, I would recommend if we are thinking about doing this that we have at least two teleporters, one person who can drop invis on a teammate or the whole group, and a bunch of awakens.
I've got a few different characters that I can make available for a group to do this that are in the 12-15 range (Doc Evil, Bulletproof Ike, Ms. Revlon, can level up St. Helen) if someone else has the mission and wants to bring in some people to help out. Or if we are going to run the mission for ThePanther then I am hoping we can find other people in our group in the right level range, hopefully with as many of the above powers as possible. Let me know if/when people are interested and lets try to do this.
Finally, I think we may be running the Positron TF this upcoming Sunday afternoon.

Heh, welcome back Jeebs.
Taskforce was bloody last night. Based on our levels it was Synapse, not Positron. We had five alts, ranging from 15-18th level. The first mission was loaded with 20th level Clockworks, with most of the packs having two bosses. Brutal. We eventually decided that there was no way we were going to finish this one in a timely fashion.
I may give the TF another try tonight if I'm up for a late-night session. ThePanther should hit 19th level soon and won't be stuck with Vaz disease, so it should be a better go for me.
Also, I'm hoping to take down Dr. Vaz on Tuesday night if people are interested in coming along for the ride. It is going to be an 18th level mission, so plan the alts accordingly if you are planning to attend.

Is Project Virus (ageofquarrel) still around? Haven't seen him on in forever. School? Work? Both?
Last night was BRU-Fucking-TAL. Taunt was 15 when he started, dinged in the middle of the mission and then I almost solo'd him to 17 before I hit the hay.
Watching 'Our Lady de Blanco Napalm' going to town in Bricks was sweet as hay'll.
If you don't have one, I suggest you roll yourself a fire/fire tank and use it as a release valve. I am so close the Burn (18) i can feel it and that is when the party really gets started.

Made a spines/invuln scrapper and got him to level 8 all ready. Wow! Another awesome build. AoE is King.

We haven't had the organized date/time set up for a few months now. I would recommend putting the names of heroes on your friend list for the alts that are not in the super group. Then just catch up with whoever is on at the time.
I'm probably going to be going after Dr. Vahz tonight with ThePanther, who is a Level 19 Martial Arts/Reflexes Scrapper. If Bonegavel is on tonight he could probably bring Ramble along and sidekick you up to around Level 20/21 so your guy would be more competitive on this arch-villain mission.
Hoping to get on sometime around 6-7 PM CST tonight.

I'm enjoying the MA/Reflexes alt, but then again I enjoyed the heck out of an invulnerable tanker, which isn't one of the premium builds. So I wouldn't take my endorsement of a build as anything resembling an uber-build. But it has been a fun powerset to play with.
Hit 20 last night, set to do the cape mission next time I'm on. Then figure out whether I want to spend money on a costume or not. I'm trying to play this one clean in terms of not spending influence I haven't earned, so my 25k isn't going to do me much in terms of a costume change right now. But it could help me with purchasing a couple of 20 DOs and getting rid of some of the training ones still floating around ... maybe 40-50 percent of my slots. At this level I'm starting to get a few DO drops, so buying them isn't mandatory anymore, but still the best use of influence I had prior to the costume option.
Oh, we dumped Dr. Vahz last night with the quickness. It was a pretty short mission. We dropped the hammer on him at Level 18 and about 5000 hp with Professor Ion (21), my guy (20), an exemp'd Beej and an exemp'd Sweet Bubbles. Bonegavel and Jeebs came online shortly thereafter, but too late to partake in the savage dismissal of the good doctor.
Come on back, Qwik. And is Blackie coming to join our little group anytime soon?

I dont' think there is ever a shortage of any type. Everyone has tons of alts and/or people are logging on/off all the time.
Build whatever you want and we'll fit it in. That is actually part of the fun: trying to do missions with the rag-tag bunch that are logged in. A poor man's difficulty slider in a way.
We always seem to have a decent mix (if not always optimal).
Our lower levels (1-30) seem to be pretty devoid of blasters and controllers. We have tons of scrappers, a few fire tanks, several invuln tanks. Other's can verify my guesses but the lack of blasters doesn't help with the killing stuff. The more Damage the better!

Speaking of Fire Tanks... hit 18 last night (thanks to hoopsguy and ThePanther) and Burn, even without slotting, is PHENOMENAL!
I don't want Taunt to be my main character, but I can see it being a very fun diversion or a good alt to have in my back pocket. I wouldn't mind a few power selection/slotting tips from Raiders Army as White Napalm appears to have what it takes.

With the brothers writing parts of the continuing story for this game, the orginial actors doing voice work, this game is supposed to continue the story. For fan boys, this is great. Gameplay issues can be ignored for content/story. I know people who are doing this.

I just don't know how they do it. Paying $15 a month for a continuing story that you can read about in their message boards? That seems a little excessive to me. I guess the gameplay issues far outweigh the content/story for me. But, to each their own.

Not saying that scrappers aren't doing the job, it is just that blasters are supposed to be the kings of damage.

Silent Partner 18 mind/transfusion controller

After doing a count the other day, I have characters on 9 of the 11 servers. It seems the more I delve into the game the more I need to try out different combinations.
Last night I went from Level 7 to 10 on my Peacebringer Kheldian.
While in atlas (at Level 7) I got 2 relative n00bs on my team and we managed to take down 2 missions dealing with the Council. I may have hit 8 during the mission and after training and grabbing a mission to see the Security Officer for Perez Park my 2 companions dropped off.
So, I head into Perez by my lonesome. I used to be xenophobic, apart from our Super Group, and would only join groups in the rarest of circumstances. Now, I open the Find window and invite any player that is +/- 2 Levels to me and not on a team. By doing this, I built a powerhouse team in the Park that proceeded to clean up the Hellions and proceed to help me to 10.5 in the Level dept.
The core of the group was comprised of 3 Kheldian PBs. This was my first time teaming with other khelds so it was interesting that by the time we rounded out the group with Blasters/Controllers/Scrappers (no defenders were in PP) we were an unstoppable grinder.
In the end, Midnight acted as the curtain call for my participation in the group.
Which brings me to this point about CoH. With each Issue that is released (currently at the 4th since release), the game complexity/dynamics increases and whereas much of the gameplay remains the same, there seems to be more and more life to squeeze from this.
??
Well, my above experience is one example. I have found a way to make building a team into a mini-game. Trying to get the most out of each member. Helping n00bs understand the game a bit more. Inviting any and everyone that I can to the team and seeing if it can work.
And, doing the above in a manner that isn't preaching or condescending. Let the player see he isn't having success and letting him ask. That is when they open up and let your experience trickle in. Best of all is the learning from them. While the game mechanics are relatively easy, there are a plethora of subtleties and there is nothing like learning something new from a kid that just purchased the game a week ago.

i like the game a lot. currently lvl 12. can't wait till 14 so i can finally fly. i'll admit i'm powergaming a bit, only because i hate seeing every TP or run fast or jump far, so i want to get to 14, train to fly, then i'll play at my normal pace. i'm doing the same missions over and over just to get xp (with different groups of people), after i get 14 i'll go back to concentrating on my own quests.
the game is great. i only have Dean Houston, and i'm not too fond of having like 10 alts, so look for me on Victory, i think Dean might be the only character i'll use for quite some time.

I am having trouble getting into this game. I find it extremely sterile and boring after coming from WoW (which I still play more), and Guild Wars (which I play on occasion). There just doesn't seem to be a point other than adding new powers (which aren't unique to anyone), or compiling badges (silly IMO) and Enhancements (which are the same other than the Origin/Power). I just feel like a clone in a suit. The most fun I have is designing my costume, but I just don't think that alone is worth the monthly fee. Hopefully, it'll grow on me.

If crafting is one of the differences, I would rather etch RVNES into my scrotum than spend a minute doing that.
Loot means nothing to me. Combat is what it is all about. Maybe this comes from my 8 years of devotion to FPS games, but the only MMO that has fun combat is CoH.
The selection of powers and the slotting thereof is the true meat of this game (beyond the fighting, of course) and you can run 88 simultaneous characters across the 11 servers.
You can solo very well in this game and it is easy to team up.
Sure the missions get boring but I'd be willing to bet that WoW is the same. Kill X of Y. Take this message to Blabbodar. Gather 20 snail shells. Same same same.
How do you find it sterile? I went through periods of extreme disappointment in the game but there is a deeper game under the hood if you take the time to see it.
Of course, YMMV and this is why there are dozens of MMOs out there. I've tried a lot of them and they all are monotonous time sinks. It just so happens that CoH adds just enough fun into the combat to make it worth the investment.

I can't speak for Schmidty, but I feel very much the same way he does. What's lacking for me is...atmosphere. The zones I've been to - all 5 or so - all look very similar. They're just not very appealing. I'm already tired of the concrete jungle and I've been able to group (mentored) by a bunch of 40th level character...and they're adventuring in the very same instanced buildings that I've been in since level 2!!! It's very unappealing to me. There's no surprise around the next corner, no real eye candy.
The mobs that I fight are all the same, too. They all are humanoid. Whoopie ding-dong...more gangs to kill. I'm a superhero...why don't I feel like one?
Beyond that, I haven't been able to find any real storyline. I'm running a bunch of seemingly endless random missions.
Does this mean I hate CoH? No. In fact, it's one of those "very close" games for me. But I don't quite get it and have never really been sucked into the game.

you might feel more like a character once City of Villains comes out and you're actually fighting against "evil" characters who can kick your ass.
and save the "i don't like PVP" crap. if you don't like even a small element of PVP then there isn't a reason to play MMORPGs. you can play games like The Elder Scrolls or something. i don't like griefing (or the concept of it, i haven't ever been griefed), but the goal of these types of games is that eventually you're going to have to face a human controlled character. if you don't find that appealling then you're into the wrong type of game.
content-wise, sure, it might be lacking, but this game is fun to play. i'm on it fairly often, because i want to build my hero's powers up and have him ready for when the real baddies come (the Villains). this game makes it very easy to play with your friends, regardless of level due to the side-kick/exemplar options. you can play at your own leisure and no matter what level everyone is all your friends can be in a group together.
it might seen like the environments are the same, as well they should. the game takes place in Paragon CITY. not the planet of Paragon. i would assume being in the same city would mean you're going to run into the same parts of town often throughout your adventures. that's my take on it.

Sure, I like PvP a bit. Not just all the time.
The game makes it very easy to play with friends.
I'm not arguing that. I'd probably like CoH if the monthly fee was $5 or so. I just don't think I'd get enough out of it to justify the $15. It's a change of pace game, not a primary game for me.

I agree. It's just so sterile and........I don't know....amateurish. I need content. If I only wanted to "make friends" or whatever, I'd just play a really good one player RPG and log onto AIM at the same time. CoH just isn't worth the $15 a month for me. Maybe it'll get better when CoV comes out, but for now it seems extremely bare.

Blackadar and Schmidty I understand where you are coming from (well not the amateurish part). I've been with COH since the beta, and I really worried about it surviving the first few months due to the concerns you've mentioned. I brought it up at the time and posted on their beta boards about how disappointing it was that they spent so much time on creating a living breathing city, and then failing to give it much "substance".
There's very little color outside of grey, white, black, and brown in the city zones themselves and the more remote zones (that I've been to at least) don't look all that different from each other. The geometry of the buildings are almost all squares or rectangles. I could overlook that because they did so many details "right"-the civilians who talk about the heroes as you walk by or click on them, the variety of cars and trucks, the road signs and ads and signs on buildings, the tram system (even if it is a bit ridiculous for superheroes to be taking the tram) and much more. So while the similar looking zones bothered me a lot at first, I've learned to look past them.
The one thing I could not look past was the abysmal decision to use "mix and match" interiors for the missions. I've created a character, run the tutorial, and then in my first mission outside of it, had the exact same layout as I did in the tutorial mission. And the lack of color applies there even more. That just boggled my mind. How does that appeal to the person who just bought your game? And worse than that there was almost no human villains with superpowers in the early game. (that's changed a bit for the better) Fighting robots with electric powers or zombies with "vomit" powers just wasn't what I was looking for. I really thought the game might go under with these design decisions.
But the good news is that things get a little better as you go up in level. You get a few more interior types, new villian groups, some human, some alien, and some in between. Story lines that began with your first level character develop and in some cases come to a conclusion when you face an archvillian. There are Trial group missions, where you run a series of interconnected missions with a story behind them, and more beyond that. You have more powers to use giving you more strategic choices.
The bad news is that the upper levels just drag and drag on even with all this. It helps to be in a group at this point, but even still it will take forever to go up a level if you are a casual player like me. I think in my experience its the MMORPG that takes the longest to go from 1-50. Too long perhaps in my opinion.
I left the game for a while because of the dragging and the allure of WOW and EQ2. But I've come back because I love the genre so much. If you aren't such a comic fan, the game probably won't have the same appeal.

I guess I really should try WoW just to be able to compare, but no Fantasy based MMO can appeal to me because I am a dyed-in-the-wool tabletop PnP RPG guy. I remember when Baldur's Gate came out and it was hailed as some sort of greatest game ever and it isn't 1 billionth of a single sit-down session of AD&D.
With that said, I can still enjoy these games (picked up Guild Wars and I think there is promise there) just in a different way.
I definitely think that $15/month is waaaay too much for the game but I have the money and with the time I spend in game I get my money's worth by the first day of the billing cycle.
If you are looking for pretty colors and vividly rendered environs, this isn't the game for you. If you are looking for endlessly varied instanced missions, this isn't the game for you.
I still have to ask how different the mission structure is in WoW? Are they that varied? Isn't it a nightmare to move around in that game? Blackie, you have yet to get a travel power, i think (not 14 yet). Once you get Super Speed or Fly you may have a hard time playing another MMO again. Before CoH, I accepted that traveling around an MMO was slow and painful. No longer.
I understand that everyone comes to these games with different expectations, desires, and goals. I can't get into the fantasy MMOs because they pale in comparison to PnP RPGs. I can get into CoH because the Comic/SuperHero genre is far less complex and more about beating the shit out of things and following relatively simple plots and schemes of villains.
What does WoW do that CoH doesn't?

Bone:
It's not easy to describe. WoW has a helluva lot more atmosphere - beautiful areas to explore, monster diversity and the like. Add in a more NPC interaction, more quests and backstory and you have a gameworld that's much more "alive". It has a lot to do with presentation - something Blizzard excells in.
Now, CoH's combat is more interesting and it's MUCH more party-friendly. In addition, WoW has some serious issues with endgame content, player base (annoying 13 year olds), population imbalances and so on. So it's not perfect by any means.
As for travel, I don't really mind it so much in WoW. Yes, it can get annoying at times. But it's not the old 20 minute EQ runs. And the world is pretty enough to enjoy the trip.
For whatever reason, in CoH I feel like even at level 11 I'm running around beating up thugs - the same guys I've beaten up for the last 10 levels. I don't understand a darn thing about the backstory except there are gangs running around. And I've just seen the same concrete jungle over and over.
If I invested the same time in WoW, I'd probably be close to level 20. I've probably seen a couple of very different zones, killed no less than 10 very different types of mobs, done countless quests and have a much better feel for the backstory and my "contribution" to the world at large.
My guess is that WoW between levels 1-30 blow away any other MMO and that CoH probably starts to get really good after level 25 or so. I just don't think I can get through the grind to get to the good stuff in CoH.

word of advice - don't go to Brickstown then. i partnered up with a couple guys from here to level (trying to get to lvl 14 so i can fly). the mobs in Brickstown are no joke. sorta felt like the Matrix in that zone. there's some definite badasses in that zone. i died 3 times trying to escape that zone.

Blackie,
Cool and yeah, the atmosphere in CoH is "sterile" compared to that. It has its pros/cons.
CoH definitely has great looking character models (important for the genre) great power effects (important for the genre) and a superb combat experience (important to the genre).
However, also important to the genre are colorful villains (both figuratively and literally) and that is somewhat missing.
If CoH could simply put more emphasis on new content, new missions, new plots, new Archetypes, new powers, new new new, the game would be much better off. The only bone thrown your way for reaching 50 is the unlocking of 2 new Archetypes. Other than that, every new character you start has the same set of missions available depending on your origin.
Once I got over that hump (i went through a "i'm quiting phase" a few times), I discovered that I really enjoyed the process of leveling, even though it becomes slow and painful, and the building of a character through the power selection and the enhancement slot allocation. You really can play 2 characters with the exact same Primary and Secondary very differently.

I'll post this again on a different thread, but...
Believe it or not, I've gone back to WoW. Since I sold my account (something I do NOT regret), I'm starting over. And my hiatus from WoW and my experience with CoH were just the trick. I've also devoted myself to RPing more and leveling less. We will see if that holds.
What I liked most about WoW - and missed in CoH - was the story and feeling of "culture". For example, I started off with a troll priest. Within my first few levels, I know that my tribe was overrun by murlocs and there are few survivors. That we are indebted to the orcs for taking us in. That we're an aggressive but honorable race but that we've been exiled and hated by other trolls because we struck an alliance with the orcs. As a priest, I don't quite fit in with my other trolls, so I'm a bit unusual. This character is on a medium-pop server.
So I started another character - a tauren druid. The backstory is even better. That we're a peaceful and proud race, a plains people who are mystic by nature and love the land. That we're not much different from the Night Elves, but not as haughty. That the orcs helped us to drive off the centaurs and that's why we're allied with them. And as a druid, I'm very much in character with my noble race. This character is on a low-pop RP server.
Both starting areas are visually very striking. I really love the Tauren plains. Since I got my new monitor, the colors of the game stand out even more. It's quite beautiful.
I'm sure I'll run into some of the same problems that I encountered before towards the endgame. Hopefully, many of them will be resolved before I get to level 60. The Battlegrounds seem very interesting - PvP with a purpose, many of the 12 year olds have moved off to Guild Wars and I've selected character types (priest, druid) that are always in demand in groups.
CoH is a good game, but I doubt I'd play it enough to justify the monthly expense.

I have yet to have anyone comment on the few bios I've made and have yet to truly role-play because, frankly, there isn't much to role-play here.

I hit 33 last night. Although it takes longer to level post-30 I am still having fun. Currently I am pursuing story arcs involving the Council, the Freakshow and Nemesis, and trying to avoid missions involving the Circle of Thorns because, well, they get under my skin.

Professor Ion is now sitting at 36. Good missions are a little hard to come by at this point. The CoT missions are a pain, mostly because the maps tend to be more difficult to completely clear.
Ion can't kick ass like uber heroes White Napalm and Tauntological, but he does do a good job of both taking and dishing out the punishment.
I did the tailor missions, which were surprisingly easy, so now I have a cape and an aura on my main costume.

I created an account and character to take advantage of the free trial. So far, I am hooked.
Look for me on Victory. My name is Boros, lvl 10 tanker.
I didn't think I would like the game that much, so I didn't put a whole lot of thought into my build, name, or costume, so I'll probably create a new character soon once I learn some more about the game (I still feel like a noob).
I'd love to group with you guys to help me learn the ropes!

It's definitely cool right now, but I have a free month to play so we'll see how it goes.I went through many phases with this game. At first I was elated. Refreshing game. Fun combat. Then, that wore off and I settled into a deeper learning curve of the dynamics of the ATs. Then, boredom set in. The grind to 50 with 1 character nearly did me in. Then, once I hit 50 I have gone back into a play-for-fun mode. Hitting 50 released a lot of anxiety for me.
Now, I am really concentrating on slotting of powers, power selection, slotting of said powers, team configurations, tactics (of which I wish there was more), etc.
Game isn't perfect by any stretch, but it is the only one to keep my attention for more than the free month. Combat is the most fun I've had in a MMO and that is apparently the most important aspect to me as there isn't much else.
