It is unlikely the Eagles will be willing to accommodate him. In Banner's 11 years as team president, he has never renegotiated a player's contract after one season. Rosenhaus did not rule out that Owens could miss some or all of the Eagles' off-season workouts or minicamps, and possibly training camp should a new deal not get done. This is a new agent for him, after all, and talking about one of your players contracts can't be that uncommon of a situation. I'm inclined to give TO a pass on this one until more details are out there.

I think it's more the precedent. You rework TO's deal then every good player is going to come in and say "Hey, you signed him last season to a bunch of money and are now redoing his deal. What about mine that we signed three years ago? I've gotten a lot better since then."

Maybe, but still it's the PR angle to me. It's been about one year since he signed that contract, and there is already the threat of a hold out. Even if it was just a change in the guaranteed money, it looks really bad to already be playing the hold out card.

Owner: Owens has received 'self-destructive advice'

PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Eagles (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=phi) will not renegotiate the contract of star wide receiver Terrell Owens (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=3664), The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Wednesday.

Owens fired longtime agent David Joseph in April, hired Drew Rosenhaus and started asking for a renegotiation just one year into a seven-year deal worth almost $49 million.

The Eagles have intimated they wouldn't redo the contract, and owner Lurie told the newspaper, "It's not even an issue."

"It's a non-issue," Lurie said. "There are a lot of things I spend time thinking about, but that's not one of them."

Lurie criticized Owens' new agent for giving him "self-destructive advice."

The flamboyant Owens helped the Eagles reach the Super Bowl in his first season in Philadelphia after eight years with San Francisco.

Owens, reached at his offseason home in Atlanta, declined to comment.

Rosenhaus also declined to respond. "My policies are not to comment, so I have no comment," Rosenhaus said.

Owens skipped the Eagles' mandatory minicamp April 29, in a holdout that could extend into training camp, which starts in late July.

"I know I'm a top player in the game, and my current contract doesn't justify that," Owens had said after hiring Rosenhaus.

"Every player is both fragile and talented," said Lurie, who was traveling Wednesday with NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue to a conference of chief executive officers in Beijing.

"Unfortunately, we're seeing around the league certain agents who take advantage of the fragility of the players, and are less worried about their continued success and stability than acting self destructively. It's too bad," he said.

Asked if he expects Owens to be with the Eagles next season, Lurie said, "If he wants to win a Super Bowl, he should be."

"At this level, with multimillions [of dollars], you're just trying to leave a legacy and win Super Bowls, as far as I am concerned. And he's got a great opportunity," Lurie said.

This is what's known in the insurance industry as "churning" - taking someone's existing policy and using it to buy them another policy, simply for the commissions to be earned for the agent. At least here, such a constant reworking of contracts is usually beneficial to the player, since he gets more money up front. But basically, the concept is the same - it's driven more by the need of the agent to keep a constant stream of income flowing (particularly in TO's case, where Rosenhaus has yet to cash in on him) than it is a need of the player/insured to receive a new contract/policy.

That Owens is a greedy and selfish player is not suprising, but I'm certain that the whole thing is driven by an agent who wants to cash in, and has talked the player, albeit one who probably wanted to listen, into going along.

I hope the Eagles stand their ground, but I would be surprised if they do nothing.

For some reason I can't envision this as one of Rosenhaus' toughest sell jobs.

It's weird what TO has become. I can still remember him with the 49ers, crying after he caught the winner vs Green Bay in the playoffs.

If they give into 1 of these guys the guys who feel they are just as "important" will be holding out and its an endless cycle. Staley who had a great year held out and became part of a "3" headed monster when he was a go to guy the year before.

i hope someone jabs a hot poker up his ass. I used to admire the guy for his talent, but now I am SO beyond sick of his act, and all the crap like this, that honestly, i just want him to go away. I was hoping last year that he'd broken his leg and would have to retire. And I'm not a mean guy, I'm really not. But he really has gotten to me that much. Considering how the Poston brothers have poisoned their reputation in the NFL by holding out players. Rookies, like Merriman, are afraid to sign with them before the draft knowing it will cause them to drop. I find what Drew Rosenhaus is doing bizarre. I seams like he is destroying his agency. Maybe he knows he is done as an agent after this year and getting as much as he can.

You have got to believe that Drew Rosenhaus isn't due to make much money on the 6 years remaining on a contract he didn't ink. I would imagine the bulk of an agents money comes in taking his cut on the players bonus and annual salary. That leaves him with no signing bonus cut (on TO) and a base salary of just over 700k to skim off next season.

It's no wonder Drew Rosenhaus is pushing for a salary restructure.

Owens simply miscalculated who he was dealing with. Say what you want about the agent, but TO did this to get a new deal.

His problems are numerous:

1) He DEMANDS to go to the Eagles. As someone wrote up above, the Eagles have a history of not renegotiating contracts.

2) He calls out McNabb. Didn't say his name. . . but he calls him out none the less. Big mistake. It'd have been like Shannon Sharpe calling out John Elway. If you want to make your case with the Philly fans, shredding McNabb was not the way to do it.

3) The timing. Again, as pointed out, the Eagles have a ton of guys in this situation right now. If TO does this after another solid year (maybe a SB win) and at a time when there are fewer big ticket Eagles looking for deals, maybe he can go behind the scenes and work something out.

As of now, he's DOA. The Eagles aren't renegotiating the deal. I think he's pretty close to burning his bridge with the team. A couple more idiotic comments should do the trick. What TO seems to be too stupid to realize is after that he'll be considered damaged goods.

There are teams who take players like that. The Raiders. The Bucs. The Ravens will do it on occasion. The Broncos too. But none of those teams have cap space (and calling Ozzie a racist pretty much destroys his chances of Baltimore).

He'll get his contract from somewhere eventually. But it likely won't happen this offseason and if he continues his idiocy, he'll be lucky to get one next year.

I guess you're probably right. T.O. seems to know what he wants and is like a baby who gets it. I hope the Eagles hold steadfast here and fine him heavily. I know I would. Even if the team lost.
