In 1986, I can remember watching Jack Nicklaus win his 6th, and final Masters championship. I was 8 years old at the time and that's my first memory of probably the greatest golfer ever. A lot can be said about today's golfers and how great they are but Jack did it in a time when there were no metal woods, golf balls didnt fly as far, and the courses were not kept in the shape they are today.

There were thoughts where he might not play at all this week because of the death of his young grandson who drown in a pool a few months ago. He will play one more "competitive" tournament round at the British Open in St. Andrew's. Dick Enberg asked Jack if he would come back to be an honory starter in the Masters and his response was no. Jack said that it was time for him to fade away and let the young guys have their time. Jack said he did not want to come back and embarass himself, and he cant see himself doing any better than he did these past two rounds. He didnt want the big fanfare goodbye and just wanted to go quietly.

Nicklaus leaves the game with 18 major championships (6 Masters, 4 US Opens, 3 British Opens, and 5 PGA Championships) to go along with 2 US Amateur titles. He also finished runner up a record 18 times (give or take a few). Records that may never be matched. Thank you Mr. Nicklaus for the memories.
