Anyone else think it's a stupid idea? With all the FM/soccer people around here, I'm surprised there hasn't been a thread devoted to expressing disgust at it.

So I know I'm not the only person here who saw the preview of the movie with their significant other and had them look at you and say, "Remind you of anybody?"

Well, speaking as a FM/Soccer fan.. it sucks.
As a Sox fan, it makes us look lamer then we already do... so.. it sucks :D

Ebert liked it.

I highly recommend the original (with Colin Firth).
A few months after I first met my wife, I gave here Nick Hornby's High Fidelity (same author as Fever Pitch) and told her "everything you need to know about why men act the way they do is in here. Let me know if you have any questions." :)
Now, I didn't think the movie version of High Fidelity, with John Cusack, was bad. I thought they captured the spirit of the book well, and it survived its transplantation to Chicago.

Yeah, High Fidelity was the only one of his movies I saw, and Fever Pitch is the only one of his books I've read. And, I guess I can kind of see switching soccer to baseball and making it about the Red Sox, but why add the cheesy romantic comedy? And I always thought the book was more about how he doesn't fit into 'normal' society, but the commercials make it seem like this woman is trying to adjust to him and HIS community is upheld as the norm. Oh, and Drew Barrymore as an accountant? Right.

I won't see that movie just because they allowed Fallon and that chick on the field during the real World Series celebration. I also won't see it because I have kids and thus no movie-going life, but if I could, I'd spend that $15 elsewhere.

Sure, Ebert liked it, but I thought Roeper's review was more poignant.
"Fever Pitch? Fever Shit."

They must have edited that out of my broadcast along with when he reportedly got Ebert in a headlock and gave him noogies.

Siskel gurgled something about needing "brains" and/or "the flesh of the living". It seems like all of his reviews have been the same for a few years now. What a hack.

A couple of the guys in my league were cast in the movie. They had open casting as extra ballplayers. One guy in my league is the one who throws the pitch when Drew Barrymore gets tagged with a foul ball. I would've gone, but they had open casting during the day and I...well...work.

I guess my problem with this movie is that someone must have said "Let's make a movie based on that soccer book. But no one wants to see a movie about soccer, so let's change it."
Has there ever been a movie as far away from the book as this?

Has there ever been a movie as far away from the book as this?Uh...isn't that called an adaptation? As in, "Let's make another Romeo and Juliet movie (musical), but no one wants to see the same boring Romeo and Juliet, so let's stick it in 1950's NYC." I realize the musical came before the movie, but still, same concept. It happens all of the time.

that doesn't mean they have to be shitty about it and make it's star be Jimmy Fallon.

Ditto. Although I blame Sox management for allowing it, I think it was a bs move. Also, seeing Fallon in a Red Sox cap made it a no-brainer.

My favorite part was a flashback where jimmy fallon beats on a tree after the red sox's lose yet again.. talk about unrealistic.. who would do such a thi.. oh wait

A weird thing to me is that the Farrellys had the movie planned for Boston to lose and Fallon to I guess "choose" Barrymore, but when the Red Sox started winning they had to change the whole ending.
Arsenal wins toward the end of the original, so I guess they made it closer to the book, even thought they didn't want to.
Another funny thing is the boxcover of the Colin Firth version. It's a naked woman with a pair of cleats hanging over her chest, and the catch line on the box says "There's more than one way to score!" WTF? I guess they wanted to trick guys into renting it.

Bourne Identity and sequel were way off from the books. Basically his name and the fact that he had amnesia were the only things the same as the books.

And that anyone who ever read the books instantly pictured Matt Damon as Bourne.

I thought Damon did a decent job of it, although, I had pictured someone much older. Same thing with Jack Ryan and Afleck, if you scratch the decent job part.

Who here actually saw Fever Pitch?
I saw it on Saturday, and I enjoyed it. It had some pretty funny moments, and the story was nice, if predictable. I thought Fallon and Barrymore pulled their characters off pretty well.

I'll agree with Chief. The movie was harmless, and was not nearly the ass raping many envisioned it would be. Fallon almost made me remember why I occasionally found him funny on SNL. But damn, Barrymore just keeps getting uglier and uglier.

Heh...not a big fan of Drew Barrymore's looks either, but I did think she was almost cute in this one (and that's a stretch for me with her).

She looked horribly famished in the movie... I almost believed the vomiting scene was real and she just had a big meal

I'm not sure I'm ever going to be able to forgive him and Barrymore for being on the field and making out as the Red Sox won the World Series (filmed for this movie). Tainted the moment for me. :(

so in 86 years or so from now. .when boston still hasn't won another world series.. will it be called the "Fever curse" or "Fallon's Folly?"

That could be an interesting double header with Cubs fan's bbq'ing bartman's corpse
