Is anyone watching the Yankees-Red Sox game? The radio said that the Red Sox did something to Mariano and he played along. Anyone know what they're talking about?

The Sox fans booed every Yankee player as he was announced. When they announced Mariano he got a standing ovation

And Rivera played along by tipping his cap to the crowd and smiling. Nice touch. :)

Is it just me, or did the ESPN crew try super, super hard to spread David Ortiz's (new?) nickname: "Big Pappy" (or "Big Poppy" depending on what inning it was)?

I kind of liked "Cookie Monster."

I enjoyed the Red Sox fans cheering immensely when A-Rod made a simple play. I didn't hear any "Year 2000" chants that the Sports Guy suggested.

i just watched the replay cuz I was at work earlier, and I gotta say, I'm not a big Pesky-fan, but when Johnny came out to get his ring and hugged and had words with every guy on the team, I'm sitting here watching the guys from now greet the old timers, and I am literally...I have tears in my eyes. Even though this song totally sucks, I have tears in my eyes. Wow. Honestly, I didn't know if I'd ever see this day, but wow. There aren't words enough.

edit: after listening to this crapass song, the thing that I think makes me more sad than anything else is that Ted wasn't here to see this. I don't know if I'd say he deserves it, but I guess in some way he really does. At least as much as Yaz, if not moreso. I miss Teddy.

dola

it sickens me that there's a guy on the yankees with my exact name (IF Andy Phillips)

I wish they'd keep the number 9 cut into the leftfield grass. That was so touching after he died.

And there's no shame in tears, i'm sure nearly every life long Red Sox fan broke down to some degree today

I was at the game. The only bad part was coming home with a nuclear level sunburn.

Well, the song by the guy who did "Talkin' Baseball" was kind of shite too. But everything else was fantastic. Everybit of the ceremony was classy, giving guys like Dave Roberts and Derek Lowe a chance to bask in the adoration one last time. Everyone was choked up when Pesky came out and got his ring.

And the whole Rivera thing was perfect. It's hard not to like the guy. He even tipped his cap again when making his way out to the bullpen.

A really fun day, and well worth the skin cancer I'm inevitably going to develop in the next two weeks.

Dude, he's been Big Poppy for at least two years now. I think he got the nickname very soon after joining the Sox.
