I have said this in the past. It is truly sad what happened to Al Lucas. However, Force = Mass x Acceleration. In football, mass and acceleration are going up every year. Strength of static structures like bone, ligaments, and neural tissue are a constant.
The collisions now are unbelievable.
I predict in the next few years, we will see a death in the NFL right on the field; just like AL Lucas.

Maybe. I guess that is why you see rule changes every now and then to limit certian hits (like the attempt to ban 'clothes line' type hits right now). But, overall the sport is not going to change much, just like people do not stop driving cars. They will only make small changes to curve injuries.
