Yeah....

Im not one of the tools that abuse it..I get my work done and only use it to talk to two people, and keep the lighter side of a day of documentation.

Well, today they announce, IM is no longer available to employees citing compliance issues, security issues, bandwidth issues.

Nothing about abuse....just that.

I hate my job sometimes........

You should kick the ass of one of those tools that abuse it. We know you can do it. You're huge. It would make you feel better.

You know....the funny thing is, right now....that sounds almost satisfying...but since I am up for promotion, I will wait until the tool reports to me, then make their life miserable.

Did you try right clicking on the icon and go to preferences? On the "Sign On/Off" there is a button on the right that says "Connection", and then press the Auto Configure. My last job firewalled AIM from connecting and sometimes when you press Autoconfigure it connected, for me at least, for some reason.

Yes. Vegeance can be a luscious fruit... when allowed to ripen!

Either that or you can wear a mask and assault them off company property like a vigilante, Hooded Justice style.

Nope...not going to work....I am in IT development, sat down with the MIS Manager, who is a buddy of mine, and was working every angle for it....basically, we are going to be audited by our CIO, HR, COO and if they see IM traffic on there after today, heads will roll.

Well then, I guess you are going to have to unplug the servers, and blame it on this new firewall that wont let you on AIM as the root of the problem as to why the servers keep shutting down.

Anonymizer.com

Might be a solution...

What are they using to monitor the traffic?

They likley just blocked the default port that AIM uses, though the autoconfigure finds an unblocked port and then uses that.

That is what I thought but Indoor said no.

They are using Websense right now..

From what I understand, Websense has the ability to block it all...however, I am fine with searching the ports and finding one open, it's not worth losing my job over.

I just like it as a form of communication with my friends and teammates to talk when I need a break from documentation.

Fucking websense.

We have that at my office. It blocks FOFC.

I use anonymizer to get around it.

not supposed to have IM at work, although every other sales dept but mine has it. it's not so much having or not having it, it's the frustration of losing access to something you used to have - I flipped out recently when gmail got blocked, but it only lasted a day (I think it was a mistake). you get used to a certain information routine, and changes like that throws everything off

actually, I do have IM, but not officially - they maintain a wireless web-only network that I can access with my laptop.

When we move at the end of may, the new building will have that as well, and then, it's how I will get it.

My worked blocked IM but I found a way around it. I went into the AIM folder and changed the AIM.exe file to math.exe and it worked! Well I guess they just blocked access to AIM.exe. Also if you go to preferences, SIGNON/OFF and then connections you can have the program find an open port so the program will open.

We use IM to communicate with each other at work.

And bandwidth concerns? Is your company fueled by an 80's era analog modem?

it's simple to get around this. just tunnel AIM through an HTTP proxy. You can do it from within AIM, and then your AIM-traffic will just look like HTTP traffic. You just have to make sure that nobody can walk by and see you on IM. It's so simple even a monkey could do it.

No, it's just a way to say, we have to do this to justify it.

Honestly, thats the main reason, the CIO is anti IM....

security issues is a good one.. can easily leak out sensitive corporate information.

we use it in my department to talk to our vendor's engineering team...

that said, you can also tunnel it through an ssh tunnel. but it's really not worth losing your job over.

So a few VP's bitched and an email goes out saying, it's not blocked, but we will be picking a standard within the week, and purchasing the secured version.
