View Full Version : The NBA Playoffs

I'm not a huge NBA fan. But it's playoff time!

Since I'm (sort-of) a Boston Celtics fan, I have to give props to the Cs for capturing their first Division title since the Larry Bird era.

And I am a bit smug over the Antoine Walker trade as there were a lot of nay-sayers on the board. They're 18-7 since trading for Walker (27-28 before the trade). They kept Payton (as predicted). Without that trade, the Celtics don't even make the playoff - never mind the #3 seed.

This has to be the biggest wildcard team in the playoffs. They can light it up - Pierce, Walker and Ricky Davis all can pour in the points. 4 of their 5 starters average double digits in points - Walker, Pierce, LaFrenz and Payton. That's a lot of scoring. Defense, well...it's questionable.

Ricky Davis comes off the bench to lead the second unit as the 5th double-digit scorer. They're also pretty deep with big men Al Jefferson, Mark Blount and even Kendrick Perkins getting minutes lately. Beyond Davis, the backcourt trio of Delonte West, Tony Allen (who tends to start at 2G now) and Marcus Banks can all contribute. Marcus has been getting solid minutes lately - 13 straight games of 10+ minutes per game.

That's a lot of youth mixed with some good experience. They can present a lot of matchup problems on the court depending on who they put in. All in all, the Cs have 10 guys who average 10+ MPG and Perkins isn't that far off of it.

They could flame out in the first round on go all the way. Either way, it should be fun to watch.

I've been kindof hoping for a while that Houston can slip down into #6 to face the Sonics rather than the Mavs. But now Denver is just one game back at #7 and I really don't want to drop down there and have to face SA (not that it's likely since we have the tiebreaker over the Nuggets).

So, if Van Gundy wants to rest most of the starters for the next two games, that'd be good- let the Kings win at Utah and then lose (or win) against Phoenix. Then Denver get beaten at Phoenix and win against Portland and Houston ends up #6 with 2 losses and everyone's happy, or at least the Houston fans ;)

I really hope they don't end up playing the Wizards in Round 1 because the Bulls will lose, and potentially lose badly.

I would much rather play Indiana in the first round than the Sixers. AI always comes out hard, and then there is always Korver killing us from 3. Washington I would think would be the ideal matchup for the C's, and if Jefferson isn't back w/ NJ, they wouldn't be a bad play either.

Maybe but they just beat them out in Philly in a big game. I just think the 76ers are way too one dimensional as I'm not a Webber guy. I think he's easily neutralized.

AI may score 50 a game but I think the C's beat them.

Yeah, i think they should be able to beat all 4 in a series. I think Indy and Philly put up the most difficult matchups (unless jefferson comes back w/ no rust). I'm definitely looking forward to seeing 'Toine back in the playoffs in green, he's a true leader. It certainly won't be like last year's playoff dibacle. Also hoping for an Al Jefferson 'come out and show the league who you are' playoffs. The kid is a hell of a scorer and rebounder. Defense is somewhat suspect, but he's only 20 and has plenty of time to grow.

If the Celtics play the...

Nets - Celtics in 6 with or without Jefferson
Wizards - Celtics in 5, I see the Wizards getting beat up down low
Sixers - Sixers in 7, Iverson really does pick his game up in the playoffs
Pacers - Pacers in 6, This isn't going to happen in Round One anyways though

Right now the C's are #3 and the Pacers are #6.

No way Sixers win game 7 in Boston. I really think Boston can handle them. Unless of course they decide to f-ck around on defense and not cover the 3 of Korver. I'd be shocked if that kid did anything in the series though.

I thought the Celtics were number two for some reason, my bad.

Anyways, I don't think the Celtics need to be afraid of Korver. He's a wildcard that will put up 15 points at best with little to no defense. Iverson is the guy they need to watch out for. If he gets going I don't think that anyone on the Celtics can stop him. The only guy I can see possibly slowing him down is Ricky Davis, but he doesn't always want to play defense.

It doesn't matter. Iverson can score 50 and the C's will still beat them.

That's the downfall of that team. It's impossible for a classic #2 guy to exist with Iverson and the way he plays. Great player in and of himself though.

Actually Ricky Davis has been consistently one of the C's best defensive players all season.

While I disagree with the first statement, I agree with you last two statements. Iverson scores 50, the team will almost certainly win. The Sixers are 7-1 when Iverson scores 40+. That is pretty amazing, he is also averaging around 8 assists per game. I agree that a "classic" number two cannot exist with him around but I don't think they need one to beat the Celts. To win the championship, yes I would say that Iverson would need to cut back on shots and co-exist with a guy like C-Webb. Ricky Davis has probably been the best defensive player on the Celts but the Celts let up more than 100 points a game this year! Ricky has the tools to be a great defender and he is, when he is going hard. I haven't seen too many Celtics game this year, maybe 10, but it seems like he comes out with great intensity on the defensive side of the ball in the 1st and 4th quarters but not in the middle quarters.

I guess I don't mean literally 50 points. I more mean Iverson can dominate play the way he usually does and it won't matter. Of course if he has a night where he's just in the zone it matters but his typical game in the 30s in inconsequential.

Let's face it, nobody can really guard the guy so that's not the issue since Philly didn't win the division.

I agree with the rest.

And yet, it'll all be for naught as the Pistons will reclaim the East.

Tayshaun Prince will do a number on Dwayne Wade (Who is second in the NBA in turnovers, and still not in Kobes league) and the Shaq formula will repeat.

People can say what they want, but no team is as balanced as the Pistons (in the East for sure, in the West, it's open for debate) and they're on a ten game winning streak.

I can't see them not making it out of the East.

It's interesting that there's a few out there who object to the best-of-7 format. I can understand it keeps things more interesting for those 1v8 and 2v7 matchups (better chance of an upset), but is there any other reason? Or is it just the playoffs drag on too long anyway (like the NHL playoffs)?

rkmsuf

For me it's a combination. Things drag on way too long and im a cranky son of a bitch who enjoyed 3/5 for 28 years and see no reason other than the quest for the almighty dollar to change it.

Huh i see the Sixers very differently than alot of you guys.

Iverson is going to get his.

In order for them to win a series its going to come from the defensive efforts of iguodala, dalembert and mckie. Jackson Korver and Webber will hit some jumpshots but in order for them to win it will be defensive stops that make the difference. (see Sixers run to the finals for referance)

Ummm, no. There's a much more likely chance of upsets with shorter series. That's pretty much why the NBA extended the first round series, to give the higher seeded teams a better chance to move on to the next round...

Along with Ricky, I think Marcus Banks can D-up Iverson. He definitely has all the physical tools to guard him, but Iverson is smart and can draw stupid fouls on Banks (or gets some phantom calls, whichever way you look at it).

If the young Celtics can contribute like they have the last few weeks I see them winning in 5.

Hmmm Banks. I honestly haven't seen Banks play too much. He is a shorter guy though, right? If he doesn't jump well I just see Iverson getting his shot off too easily against guys that aren't 4/5 inches taller than him. I haven't seen him much though so you could be very right.

This is kinda funny. My interest in the NBA (as has been for the past 10 years) has been 0 - about as detestable as any sport can possibly be (or has become). However yesterday for the very first time all season, I looked at the standings. Here were my reactions:
- 3 divisions per league - wtf?????
- Boston on top again????
- Chicago in the playoffs???? Last time I checked, they were winning 4-5 games per season
- Lakers I sort of knew about from glancing at threads here
- Denver I knew about because the local papers put them in big headlines. Karl must have took that stupid kid and pounded some sense into him
- What's New Orleans team called???

Sort of like a rip van winkle effect.

Personally, I think the Rockets have a very good chance of beating anyone this postseason. They've won nine consecutive games, are playing good, team ball, and can win both high scoring and low scoring games.

My only worry is that the winner of this series is gonna be worn out and winds up losing in the next round. Hopefully the Rox take it in no more than six so that's not too much of an issue...

Oh, and congrats on the Nugs win, Troy. I'm certainly rooting for them. At least until they play the Rox or Mavs, that is... :)

Were Denver to beat SA and Houston to beat Phoenix, we'd have one hell of a conference final.

I think Denver matches up pretty well with the Rockets. They were smoked the last time they played them, but the Nuggets didn't have Camby and were coming off a back to back. (while the Rockets had three days rest)

I'll take my chances with Houston if they are coming off of two running series vs. the Mavs and Suns. All we have to do is steal one in Houston. No way Yao lasts more than about 15 mintues running at altitude. :)

Oh. . . and yes, I think if the Nuggets get by the Spurs, they'll beat the Sonics/Kings winner fairly easily.

Not to mention Deng is out for the season as well.

I'm sure most Chicago fans will agree that this is such an incredibly exciting team to watch because just about *anyone* can come in and win the game for you. This team reminds me a lot of last year's Detroit team. We play the same brand of basketball and while we obviously are not at that level yet, considering just how young we are I am very excited to see what our future holds.

Hopefully everything with Eddy will work out...

Oh and it was especially nice to win after all the smack the Wizards have been talking come into this game :)

It certainly hasn't helped.

The Mavs have been one of the most talented teams in the NBA for the last several years - maybe it's just bad coaching, but I'm a little surprised they haven't made it to the finals.

RGunner
05-02-2005, 11:03 PM
I agree the refs have been bad in this series, but T-Mac and Yao get fouls called on someone if they pretty much breathe on them almost every single time. On saturday Yao got away with 3 or 4 fouls on blocked shots that they showed the replays of and he got all over the person and no ball. The refs have not been good for either team, no way you can say its been worse for either team.

the refs are pathetic in this game, T-Mac gets away with everything, Barry pushes off and gets a foul on Dampier, Sura tackles Howard and barely gets called for anything should have been ejected, Dirk gets mugged almost every time down the court and nothing, yet people breathe on T-Mac and its a foul. Its rediculous how much superstar treatment he gets and Dirk gets none of it. Its bullshit how one sided the refs have been in this game.

JeeberD
05-05-2005, 11:12 PM
Makes up for the last three games, RGunner...

RGunner
05-05-2005, 11:15 PM
LOL no it doesnt he gets away with that every single game, Dirk never gets any of the calls he gets and you know thats the truth. If you breathe on T-Mac is a foul, he may be an amazing player but he gets way too many calls that he shouldnt get, they anticipate a foul every time he goes up to the hoop. IT doesn't come close to what you said, the refs werent one sided in the last 3 games and thats not even close to true, just because they blew two calls at the end doesn't mean they were one sided. They make mistakes, but to believe they can make 10-15 mistakes a game on fouls against T-Mac is a little hard to believe that he gets fouled every time he goes to the basket.

JeeberD
05-05-2005, 11:20 PM
Bullshit. I saw call after call that the refs blew the last few games. Yao gets close to anyone in the paint and it's an automatic foul, not to mention the Finley crap last game...

And, slightly off topic, but in the NBA does a player on a fast break just have to throw up any old shot with a player in his face to get a fould called for him? I've seen so many calls in this series (going both ways) where a defender got in a players face on the break and a foul was called even though there was no contact. Just another reason I like college ball better.

Rox up 21 with 37 seconds left. Game seven, here we come!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RGunner
05-05-2005, 11:29 PM
Half the time Yao does foul them, but anyways, how does Sura not get ejected for tackling Howard? Thats the biggest bullshit call I've seen, but thats what he does all the time. He constantly tries to start shit with everybody and gets away with it. Him and Barry have to be the most annoying showboating players in the world that only show up every once in a while.

Does Phoenix have a shot against San Antonio?

Will be tough with San Antonio's defense and Duncan/Gino, but Phoenix did have the best record in the league this year. Just gotta find a way to score.
