Bette Shober (L) and Joanne Vrablik (R) take a closer look at what people believe to be an image of the Virgin Mary under a freeway underpass in Chicago, April 18, 2005. Police said the image might have been caused by stains from road salt that dripped from the Kennedy expressway onto the wall, but hundreds of believers have been coming to the underpass to view the image and pray at the spot. Weird. I live on Fullerton, and I take that entrance to get to the Kennedy on my way to work. I was there this morning, but didn't notice anything. Maybe it was too early?

What's the over/under of people who look at this and make some comment about how she appeared to welcome the new pope?

They are claiming it resembles Our Lady of Guadalupe..

you should go back and carve it out and sell it on Ebay. you probably get a lot of money for it. :)

I'm more curious about whether I should avoid it because of the traffic, or drive by to see all the craziness.

I understand this, I never claimed it was a miracle or an apparition. I responded to your blasphemous comments about the Mother of God. I was
Offended as I have a great love for the Blessed Mother. Just as if you were to post something here in reference to my earthly mother. That’s it in a nutshell Suicane.

I think I read that people lit candles, but there are always homeless in that underpass, so I wouldn't be surprised if there were beer cans. Which of course makes me think it's a good thing Mary came down to support some woman taking a nursing school test, ignoring the homeless that are ALWAYS in that underpass.

So how is mentioning Mary's vagina blasphemous? It's one of her most famous attributes.. both for it's virginal state and who she birthed through it. And I personally think that vaginas are beautiful things.. but then maybe I've been getting a little too into the wonders of the female body since my recent out-of-hospital natural childbirth.

What was blasphemous?
Did Mary not have a vagina? I don't recall that part.
Question: through what did Jesus enter the world of men?
I'm pretty sure the answer is Mary's vagina.
Are you just scared of that word? Vagina?

Anyway, back to the rest of the Virgin Mary...I drove past it on my way home yesterday, and there was a policeman directing traffic from the exit ramp, and I'd say at least 100 people there. There were a few flags hung on the wall -- one was city of Chicago flag, and the other two I couldn't recognize. As I drove away on Fullerton, there were a lot of people walking toward it, but it was a warm day, so there might have been a lot of people out anyway, although probably not that many at 3 PM on a weekday. On my way to work this morning, there was still at least one policeman on the scene, and about 10-15 people there, some taking pictures -- I expected there to be fewer people at 6:15 am, though.
I'm curious as to how long this thing will last. It doesn't look like it's going anywhere, so it will probably last until people get bored with it.

Rock on. My older daughter was born with the help of a midwife at a hospital. My younger daughter was born at home with a midwife. The at-home experience was fantastic.
Congratulations.

I think there is an uncanny resemblence to the Virgin Mary that I have seen depicted in murals and paintings...the western european one, not the black one...

Thank you. I really can't stop telling people about how amazing the experience was. I had my daughter at a birthing center and it was great there, but I'm contemplating a home birth in the future (especially if we move to an area without any freestanding birthing centers).

Guys, there is no way that was really the Virgin Mary. I was looking at her schedule earlier and she is booked for the whole week on a tortilla in Iowa.

Esp. all of the ones that make her a 16th century maiden.
