I take an annual college football trip with several college buddies. This year takes us to the Horse Shoe and Ohio State (for the Texas game, actually). We've got our game tickets and all that good stuff, but we're trying to jump on accomodations. From what I can tell most of the hotels/lodging right around campus are booked up. Any recommendations on where to stay--both in terms of general areas and/or specific hotels? Our priorities would be proximity to campus and good restaurants/nightlife nearby.

Thanks for any suggestions.

First of all, I'm very jealous. It is a night game so expect a couple extra hundred thousand partying outside the stadium and an incredible atmosphere.

What kind of price range are you looking for? I see the Crowne Plaza is available that weeend. It is right downtown and close to the bars at the arena district for Friday night and also a only few miles away from OSU for Saturday.

Taxis are pretty cheap so we usually just stay in Dublin and get taxis back and forth to the game.

Your team sucks and your city is a wretched hive of sum and villainy.

I miss John Cooper. :(

Skip Columbus and go straight to Ann Arbor.

If you do that, just make sure you inhale before you sit down and hold your breath for the next three and a half hours. You're going to need that extra room. One more thing, don't ever leave your seat for a restroom break or you'll miss a quarter or two.

Sweet, I am going to Columbus for the Texas game. Probably be drunk by game time though. :)

I stayed down there for state tournaments a couple months ago, I'll look where we stayed in the morning, too tired now.

I was there for OSU-NC State back in 2003, but can't really offer a viable place to stay because we actually stayed way out in Marysville, I think. It was cheap and we had to make the reservation on the spot because I was only able to get tickets a couple of days before the game. We then commuted in, parked way out near the interstate and ferried in by bus to the stadium. Worked out pretty well.

As for the stadium itself, it's a nice piece of architecture to look at, but those way up in the upper rim are practically walking with their feet sideways to go up the stairs, it looks like (I can't say for sure because we had seats in the end zone underneath the scoreboard, but they looked hellasteep).

Since you aren't from Michigan, I expect the OSU fans will be hospitable to you. The ones I was among were generally so towards my wife and I. The atmosphere is outstanding and should be lights out for an opponent like Texas. From what I can tell, they reserve the heavy bile for Michigan (you'll see plenty of **** Michigan shirts and similar items while you're there). Then again, the Buckeyes won in 2003, so I'm not sure how good the fans are at taking a loss.

I'm also thinking about heading up for that game, maybe we can get a FOFC crew together to crash the College Game Day set... :D

Two others are Sooners, so they might balance him out.

Thanks. We ended up booking the Drury Suites, on the same block as the Crowne Plaza.

Places to go before and after the game are The Buckeye Club and Heineygate (sp?), both are directly north of Ohio Stadium, on the other side of St. John's Arena. Both will be packed, I would guess by 11am and yes I know the game starts at 8pm.

As for the fans treatment of you, generally if you are not being cocky they will treat you well. Some idiots will talk shit though, that is a given.
