is my laptop screwed

everytime I try to boot I get an error message.

A device or resource required by VFAT is not present or is unavailable. VFAT can not continue loading.

System halted.


I think this is not good. Any advice?

Sounds like your running Windows 9x/ME

You might be able to get away with re-installing the OS. DON'T re format... just re-install. You'll lose some settings, but the data should be OK. Maybe.
