View Full Version : Draft Commentary Lame This Year

Is it just me, or did anybody else find the draft commentary to be especially bland and inane this year. How many times did they say that caoches are "just looking for football players," or, "guys who can play football." What a stupid piece of commentary to keep harping on.
Mel Kiper had the Pats first round pick with a third round grade, but instead of saying that he thought it was a reach, he went out of his way to say how it still wasn't a reach despite the fact that Mel thinks that there were three guards still on the board better than him and that he shouldn't have gone for another round. Nope, he was a solid pick and he could be a great player.
There was a player than Mel thought was a fifth round guy who was taken early in the second, and instead of slamming the team for picking a player too early or not getting value, they mentioned that some really good player in the NFL was a fifth round pick, but if people had to do it all over again, they'd pick him higher. All of which had nothing to do with reaching for a guy too soon.
Seemed like a really lame day to me, especially Torry's love fest of all things Rams. When he interviewed an OT selected by the Rams, despite not knowing who the guy was and not wanting a T with the pick, he asked the guy, "Tell everyone how you are going to dominate in this league." Stupid.
When a Lion said that he'd help Detroit against Chicago and TAMPA BAY, you have to wonder if he even knows the conference alignment.
Later in the draft, Torry mentioned that he really liked some third round draftee because when Torry talked to hima year ago, he said that he was going to be the number one pick, and Torry liked that confidence. Now, I can understand you saying, "My goal is to be the number one pick." But saying, "I AM going to be the number one pick," that's not confidence, its sheer arrogance.
The only time i enjoyed the day is when Torry Holt said he liked Maurice Clarett and Chris Mortenson asked him why and Torry just stammered. Now that was golden.
The entire night, ESPN was broadcasting their draft ticker that said the Jags second round pick, OT Khalif Barnes, was their highest drafted OT since Boselli. Unfortunately, TWO OTs have also been selected in the second round between Boselli and Barnes, and both were higher selections in the second round, so that stat was way out of whack.

i expect mistakes in day 2.. but day one's coverage was horrid.. Like when Andrea Kramer was asking jon jansen about them picking another miami player (antrell rolle.. who just went off the board) after all the problems they had with sean taylor..

Andrea Kramer is bright orange. I had to put shades on every time they cut to one of her segments.

Torry Holt added zero to the broadcast. Anytime they asked him about a player he spoke in the most general terms possible.

It appears that they have made a corporate decision to highlight feature stories over the meat and potatoes approach. In past years it was all about the pick and then subsequent discussion about the pertinent player. Now, its just a rehash of a 'story' and and inside view. All I want is each player picked to be discussed, and a little film on each. I don't want to know who their father is or how many brother and sisters they have. At some points yesterday, 5 or 6 picks would go unmentioned and never was discussed. Oh, Torry Holt is horrid, Corey Chavous is **much** better. Mike Vrabel is an arrogant jerk as well.

I had been wondering were Chavous was because I had pretty much left it on ESPN all day. Then I saw him on the NFL Network. Too bad, despite being a VIking he is one of the better players to have on a show. ESPN is losing out on top players to the future home of the draft, the NFL Network.

My first instinct was to think he didn't understand the divisions anymore as well. But when Mike Williams said this I think it had a lot more to do with him feeling personally slighted by the Bears and Bucs than with conference alignment. I'm assuming both clubs had expressed a lot of interest, and maybe even said the sort of things the Skins said to Winslow last year, and Williams was angry they let him fall to ten.

I only caught the piece about the Pats. It wa funny. Wasn't sure if the whole day was like that or if it was more Pats ass kissing.

I thought the various players were kind of interesting, even in the moments when they sucked most. Most of them weren't people I've seen/heard a lot, so it was interesting to try to parse conclusions about them out of their work on the draft, even if those conclusions weren't always flattering.

I missed having an ex-coach in there. I liked having guys like Denny Green, so you could get that perspective. Having an active player just doesn't seem like that good of an idea. They can't really be that critical. Maybe a recently retired guy, like Shannon Sharpe or Rod Woodson, but not an active player that will be in camp with some of these guys.

Recent years have had the commenators being PC with just about every pick. I'll just listen to Collin Cowherd tomorrow.

I was really impressed with it. But that just show you the silliness of all the hoopla over the NFL Draft. It's long and when you get to the lower rounds, it seems silly. Especially when you're not like having ESPN'S college football people doing the telecasts, as that would actually make sense.
They might know the players and could make some sense. Rather than giving us Andrea Kremer showing Tom Brady clips of SNL.

DC - I believe that the college perspective is being covered on ESPNU (which, alas, I don't get on Dish yet)

Ooh..good call. I hate the whole 100 channel ESPN thing. You start to lose stuff that you used to get for free, diluting the quality of the product for all of us.
That said, I just turned it on and I like what Jaws and Co. are doing a lot more than what I saw before yesterday. It's too detailed for Day 1 coverage. But it's nice.

Is anyone else on here as astounded of Torry Holts command of the english language as I am? He repeatedly said axe instead of ask, players were not smooth, the were smoove, and he continually screwed up players names. When he said Dante Pepper instead of Culpepper, I let it slide, I figured its a nickname. But when he said Antonio Winfield instead of Antoine Winfield and how much he liked Rudy White, not Roddy White I wanted to scream. I got the impression that Chris Mortonson just wanted to scream at him what a retard he is and throw Kipers draft guide at his head. How the hell did Holt end up on the draft coverage anyway?

Obviously, I agree with Holt being a tremendously inappropriate choice for commentator. However, the whole ask = axe thing is common urban slang. Most of my Detroit staff say the same thing. I don't want to give the guy a hard time because he has an accent, especially since his commentary was so bad in content.
I missed the slaughtering of names. I remember someone (Andrea Kramer I believe) calling the first WR choice of the Lions Carlos Rogers instead of Charles Rogers.

It would have been a lot better with Michael Irvin, like last year. I don't always like Irvin, but Holt was horrrrrrible and a huge bore. Some guy got picked in the third round and Holt said, "I've never heard of this guy." A real expert. He added nothing except blandness.
If they really wanted a current player, they should have brought in Vrabel and put Holt in that other room. I thought Vrabel was best of that sorry bunch.
I'd rather see Berman out of there and replaced by Kolver with Mort, Kiper, and Irvin. That would be a better lineup in my opinion, though by no means perfect.

I think they're wary of talking smack about any of their picks. Which is silly since the Patriots have plenty of busts on their record. I found Mel Kiper's thoughts about taking the #4 guard as the #1 guard pretty funny. I was half expecting him to say that he made a mistake in his rankings and the Patriots were right.

Yeah. I thought it was a great piece of UIC because they had JUST ran Kiper's Greatest Hits like they do every year where he slams the Jets and the Colts for making bad first round picks, and then he waffles like mad with the Pats pick. It was like a big flashing neon "Sell-Out!" sign was over his head.

Saying Axe instead of ask has nothing to do with having an accent and everything to do with not using proper grammer. I realize its popular urban slang, and if he were on a couch with a bunch of friends watching the draft its no big deal, but I feel it is when you are in front of millions of people watching. Why did he wear a suit? does he wear that when he is out on the town? He dressed up to be on TV, but then came off sounding like an idiot. And before all of the people claiming I am a racist start slinging arrows let me state that it would work the same way for any white guy or any other color for that matter. When you interview for a job you dress up and talk in complete sentances instead of wearing sweatpants and having every third word out of your mouth be an obsenity, this should have been treated the same way. He came off as very unprofessional and unintelligent. I still feel that it was minor compared to butchering everyones name and not having any idea what the hell he was talking about or who he was talking about. It was just the icing on the cake.

I thought what you said made good sense until I remembered that the Vikings are in division and passed him over for another *receiver*. It's one thing for the Bucs to grab a RB when they have tremendous need, its quite another for the Vikes to take another receiver over you. So, if he was upset about NFC teams that passed on him, wouldn't the Vikes have been the first team he mentioned or thought of?
