Wis. Man Tells Police He Froze Dead Mother
By TODD RICHMOND
Associated Press Writer

LA CROSSE, Wis. — A man told police he kept his mother's corpse in a basement freezer for more than four years while he collected her Social Security checks, authorities said Monday. A body was found encased in ice, in a sitting position.

Philip Schuth, 52, told police his elderly mother, Edith, died of natural causes in August 2000, but that he didn't tell anyone because he was afraid police would blame him, according to documents filed in court Monday.

He said his mother years beforehand was attacked by a cat and her blood was on the walls in the house they shared, and he feared police would think he killed her, according to the documents.

Police recovered a chest-type freezer in Schuth's basement, and after chipping away at a block of ice, discovered a human knee.

Sheriff's Capt. Jeff Wolf said a body appears to be in the block, intact in a sitting position. The body has not been identified; an autopsy is set for later this week.

Investigators found the freezer at the end of an all-night standoff at Schuth's home in the Town of Campbell, located on French Island in the Mississippi River about 110 miles northwest of Madison. The standoff began Friday when a 10-year-old boy told his father that Schuth had hit him.

The boy's father, mother and the child confronted Schuth at his home. After admitting he had hit the boy, Schuth pulled out a handgun and opened fire, according to court documents. The father was hit three times, and the family fled and called police. The father was treated and released for his wounds.

Schuth retreated into his house and when SWAT teams arrived, he told negotiators he had "more than 10 but less than 100" bombs and 16 firearms, and that it would be "high noon" when he surrendered, according to court documents.

He surrendered early Saturday without incident. Investigators found 15 to 20 homemade explosive devices, packed with nails, heavy staples and other metal items, a sawed-off shotgun along with 15 other firearms, documents said.

La Crosse County District Attorney Scott Horne said he plans to charge Schuth next week with attempted homicide and reckless endangerment for allegedly shooting at the family, as well as having improvised explosives and concealing a corpse.

Of course, I'm not sure I believe the whole "cat attack/blood on the walls" story, and since he surrendered early Saturday, it appears he didn't live up to his "high noon surrender" promise, either.

cat attack?

a good cat hunt would have avoided this whole thing.

I grew up about 3 miles from French Island - and this sounds about right. :)

There's a reason why Wisconsin leads the nation in per capita consumption of alcohol, and you're seeing it on display in this story. They've got a bunch of loonies they're trying to deal with up there.

I wonder if this guy's related to those Asian (?) kids who kept their dead dad so they could keep winning the oldest person alive award from their village.

Dead woman left on floor for two years

Kathleen Wilson lay on the kitchen floor of her Fairfield, California, home for nearly two years after she died, her son and husband stepping around the remains as they prepared meals and went on with daily life.

Fairfield police discovered the corpse and arrested her son, Jack Wilson, 48, Friday afternoon on suspicion of elder abuse. A concerned neighbour had reported not seeing the elderly woman in about a year.

Jack Wilson told police his mother had fallen in the kitchen sometime in mid-2003 and she had remained there ever since, said Fairfield police Sergeant Mike Johnstone.

"He says he left her in the kitchen and tried to feed her and take care of her for a couple weeks before she died," Johnstone said.

Jack Wilson has been cooperative with the investigation. Police said he understood his mother was dead, but why he never tried to get her medical attention or report her death remains unclear.

"He didn't have an answer for that," Johnstone said.

Jack's father, Harry Wilson, 81, was taken into the care of Adult Protective Services. He returned home from a walk as officers were arresting his son and asked where his wife was, Johnstone said.

A county social worker went to the Utah Street home for a welfare check Friday after a neighbour anonymously called Solano County's Adult Protective Services tip line. The social worker called police after detecting a strange odour emanating from the residence, Johnstone said.

Police say the home was in disarray, littered with rubbish and cat faeces. Kathleen Wilson's clothed remains lay uncovered on the kitchen floor.

"Harry and Jack lived there, they were at the house, they continued to use the kitchen," Johnstone said.

Solano County Coroner's officials conducted an autopsy yesterday, the results of which were not released. Police and the district attorney are waiting for the cause of death to determine whether additional charges should be brought against Jack Wilson.

Peggy Osborn, program manager for the Attorney General's Office elder abuse public awareness campaign, said cases like Kathleen Wilson's shock the public, but happen more often than most people realise.

"One thing about elder abuse, neglect or isolation is that it thrives on silence," she said.

"What would have happened if someone had picked up a phone a year ago?"

Osborn says many individuals don't report elder abuse because they think they have to witness a violent act or injury such as a broken arm, but that's not true.

Individuals can anonymously report abuse or concern for an elderly person by calling a toll free state hotline.

"If someone had picked up a phone and said, 'I haven't seen her in a while,' that can save someone's life," Osborn said.

Okay, that's just nucking futs. They let her ROT in the middle of their kitchen for two years?! What part of the brain do you need to shut down in order to do that?

You'd need to shut down everything but the brainstem.
