For my money it's Sebastian Bach, that dude has a set of pipes like no one I've ever heard live

Depends on your definition.
Layne Staley is mine if you consider him metal or not. His vocals were eerie but amazing.

agreed... but his voice is amazing.
I'd say Robert Plant, then Jonathan Davis from Korn.

Interestingly enough, I looked at the thread's title and his name popped into my head first.
I'd have to go with James Hetfield with Mark Slaughter as a close second.

My sentimental favorite has to be Rob Halford, though.

Apparently, me & Condors have similar tastes, with my first thoughts being Dickinson & Tate. Dio is certainly there, as would be the aforementioned Sebastian Bach.
So I got something, just nothing new.

Considering the types of bands being considered, I'd say Geoff Tate of Queensryche, hands down.
There is a current metal band out of Finland though called Nightwish whose lead singer is a female with opera training from one of the best schools in Europe. Unbelievable voice.

Tru dat. I mentioned James Hetfield from Metallica, who I would classify as heavy metal (thinking more of the early pre-Black albums), and I also mentioned Mark Slaughter, although he's more hair band. But since Sebastian Bach was mentioned in the OP's message, I thought it would be okay.

If I ignore all well-known quantities and include fringe/arguable "metal" singers, I'd probably have to go with Buddo from Last Crack. His voice gives me goosebumps. Extraordinarily gifted vocalist who can pull off multiple styles without a hitch. Sounds a bit like Bono at times, as did Last Crack. Anyone from Wisconsin remember them? They're back together, and he's been in multiple bands around Madison since the early 90's.
dUg Pinnick of King's X would be a close second (I know, big surprise). Speaking of which, coming to a store...who am I kidding...available soon for internet pre-order:

Glenn Hughes or Ray Gillen, both formerly Black Sabbath vocalists.

Someone define "metal." There are many levels and forms to metal, which I believe is the cause of the confusion.

Well, considering the person who started this thread went with Sebastian Bach, I thought we were going with a loose definition of "heavy metal". :)
To go with a more straight heavy metal band, I will say Till Lindemann. I love how deep his voice his. Perfect for heavy metal.

I know this is a joke, but the guy actually doing the vocals for that movie was Michael Matijevic, from the 80's hair band Steelheart. You might remember their one big hit, I'll Never Let You Go, a hair metal power ballad staple of 80's compilations nowadays. That song has the distinction of being the only power ballad which would simultaneously put your girlfriend in a romantic enough mood to sleep with you and give her a migraine and excuse not to sleep with you, all in the course of the same song.

Chinaski has it right on with Mike Patton.
Pattons vocals are diverse on every thing he does.
And what doesn't he do?
Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Fantamos, Tomahawk, etc etc

Hell yeah, Black Sabbath is the Godfathers of Heavy Metal.... BTW Skid Row is not Heavy at all, they are one of the many Hair bands of the Late 80's early 90's. Heavy Metal music is Sabbath, Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera, Deftones, Rammstein, Mudvayne, and so on.... Also, I would consider Tool to be progressive metal, not heavy....

I'd say Down is/was more heavy metal then Metallica, Megadeth, Deftones or Mudvayne.
I'd put the first two in thrash, with Anthrax, Slayer, etc.
The other two, I'd put in the trash.

Down is now way progressive and mainstream. Their old stuff was pretty heavy and creative but it didn't compared to Sabbath in their time...

So many choices, but i'll go with dio or halford. Can't really go wrong with any album these guys were a part of from '76-'84, except maybe "point of entry" in halford's case.
