View Full Version : Why wouldn't you drink?

I was just reading the smoking poll where some of you said you would never drink and I am just wondering why? I am by no means making fun of you for not drinking I am just curious for your reasons. A few drinks for most people is relaxing and there are quite a few drinks that taste good. I am not trying to change anyones mind I am just curious why you would be against drinking?

Umm..I drink maybe a few times at year at most. Like, at random times. I can probably count the number of drinks I've had since turning 21 and I never drank alcohol prior to that.
For me, I just don't find it all that appealing. I find wine to be gross - even expensive stuff - because I can't stand the smell of alcohol. I think beer is vile and well..the only think I can stand is amaretto and even then, I have to make my amaretto sours with a soda that's got lots of sugar like Mountain Dew or something.
So, it's not a moral thing for me - though for some it surely is. I just don't find the stuff that appealing.

I dont need the influece of a drug (alcohol is a drug) to relax or enjoy myself. I dont like things which inhibit my ability to think or make decisions. I like who I am sober/drug free and I am stubborn to the point where I am not going to change that to "fit in".

Yeah, I've never been drunk. When I was in the Air Force, everyone joked they'd "get me drunk" or whatever. Even my girlfriend has joked about it before. But I've never even been buzzed or whatever. I just prefer having good control of my senses and I dunno, I think I'm probably more afraid of getting sick than anything else.
Plus, alcoholism runs in my family. So that's probably a big reason - though not a conscious motivator - as to why I stay away.

I've never been drunk, or even tipsy. Until I married into a country club family, I'd never had more than a sip of wine at Communion. I now enjoy the occasional glass of wine with dinner. However, it turns out that my taste in wine is in the moderate-expensive range, so I don't have it very often. My former-state-deb wife can enjoy some $8-and-under-a-bottle wines, but her raised-in-the-hood bruthaman husband can't. Go figure. :p
I didn't drink until 21 for morality-related reasons. After 21, it was because there was no alcoholic drink that I found tasty until I was exposed to Kendall-Jackson chardonnay.

So do you think less of people who do drink?
No. I don't believe what is right for me is right for everyone else. My dad goes out drinking every Friday/Saturday night. My uncle drinks. My mom drinks on occasion. As well as just about every other person in my family at some point in their lives. Some want some beer or some wine to take their mind off of something and relax, hey whatever works for them, as long as they do it responsibly.
With that said, I do think less of people who drive drunk or commit other terrible acts while under the influence of a drug.

I used to drink a lot in high school and early in college, but now I can't have much fun with it. I'd rather take vicodin.

Pretty much me spot on. To answer a later question, I don't look down on someone else who does drink, but I am slightly disappointed that they don't see it the way I do. None of my close friends drink. Very few in what I would call the next tier of friends do. If someone I'm with starts to drink, I will just leave. I also don't enjoy being around people that have been drinking or are drinking.

Funny, I do.
Seriously, maybe it's from being in the Marines years ago.. but I like beer very much so. I don't get hammered anymore, but a few beers on the weekends and definitely on golf night. In fact, is there a better beer than at a baseball game?

I am 22 and have never drank in my life. I don't intend to, either. I decided not to drink for personal reasons when I was younger. As I grew older there was a time during which I despised my friends for drinking, but I've grown out of that stage now.
As a resident assistant for two years and a residence director for a year in college, I've seen plenty of people who drank too much and made poor decisions. I know that many people drink responsibily and I commend them for it, but my college memories are filled with taking care of other people. My drinking is a personal choice and I'm happy with that choice.

Edit. when I said I felt about the same, I meant being around people who are drunk or are drinking to get drunk. I dont have a problem with being around people who have a beer or order some drink at a restaurant.

If I didn't like the taste I wouldn't drink. I don't drink wine or liquor for that reason. Don't drink stuff like Bud or Coors anymore for the same reason. I never liked the taste or smell of cigarettes or pot too, so I always avoided those.
But there are few things I think taste better than a good beer.

Hmm. I do not drink very much, and Ido not really know why. Lately I have been having beer a little more often but not very much compared to many.
I love beer, especially the darker ales. I love the taste, it has nothing to do with getting drunk or buzzed. That was when I was 15-19. I was drunk quite often during those times. Threw keggers, went to keggers, it was all about the kegs. And the only wine I have ever had also came during that time, Boone's and Mad Dog 20/20 (more turpentine then wine I think).
Guess I burned myself out early on. Between working on the road (in which I cant and never drink) and my small time home, I just don't have enough time to worry if I have beer or not to drink every night.
Been a while since I had vodka too, about 7-9 years.

That and since I'm allergic to smoke, I'd hack up a lung.
As for drinking, I like a good glass of wine every once in a while (ever been to the local wineries, Ragone? there is one in particular that's pretty good). I'm poor so it's not as if I can afford good alcohol tho if anyone's offering- I'll have a drink :) and, well, bad hard liquor tastes like ass unless it's in something (I had a roommate who used to drink McCormick vodka so you can only imagine how I arrived at that conclusion). Nothing against drinking, but then there's getting drunk...
To the question asked earlier, yeah, I look down a bit on people who need to get drunk to have fun. The drunks I've been around are either prone to being stupid or surly or whatever when drunk and then afterwords come back to apologize for something stupid/surly/whatever they did. Have some accountability- you're going to act differently when enebriated so just don't so it.

Booooooo! Nati is far worse. Granted, I'm finally getting to the point where I'll go a tier up from stones and nati and up to Bud Light or Coors Light. I'm willing to get 6 fewer beers for the same price for a slight bump up in taste.

Yes. I don't like the effect it has on people's bodies, mind, self-control, etc. I don't want to be around people that are under that sort of external influence because it makes me uncomfortable. I also don't want to feel pressured by them to drink (it won't make me drink, it will just piss me off). It is just a situation I choose not to have in my life. Luckily it is very, very rarely an issue for me. Most of the people I hang out with feel the same way.

Same here. I never drink at home anymore and back when I did, it was an occassional sippin' juice type stuff. I think going to local bars is stupid, not so much because of the bar but because of the people that are there and how they are acting. I would much rather spend the time going to a nice restaurant. However, I do drink the couple of times a year that I travel - esp. when I go to Las Vegas. Don't have to worry about driving or getting around and it seems to be the thing to do. But then again, I am not 21-32 anymore and back then, I was like many of you.

1) I hate the taste. When I was a kid I was given tastes of beer, wine, and champaign and could not stand any of them.
2) I never understood why kids in high school thought it was so cool that someone was puking in the bathtub all night at a party. Throwing up is one of the worst feelings in the world, and I have no clue why anyone would bring that on themselves voluntarily.
I am perfectly fine with people who have a drink or two now and then. I feel the same way about people who intentionally go out and get drunk the same way I do about people who smoke: fine, it's your choice, but why one earth would you want to do something like that to yourself?

I started drinking (read: getting wasted) on a regular basis when I was 18 (and in college). I've always hated the taste of beer, but during my early drinking days, I tolerated it. Once i moved up to drinking pretty hard stuff, I have basically given up all beer.
But I don't drink much anymore. I've built up a huge tolerance to alcohol and can barely even get buzzed no matter how much alcohol I drink.

Me three with gstelmack and FBPro. I hate the taste. Why waste good money drinking stuff that to me tastes like piss. Not everyone likes everything. There are bound to be people who don't like alcohol just as there are people who don't like chocolate.
The only thing about being a non-drinker with drinkers is that there are certain "types" of drinkers that annoy me. For instance, I was out with four women from work the other night and they all wanted to find something I would like. They struck out all night long, but it didn't stop them. I don't like it -- deal with it.
Then there are the drinkers who drink beyond the point of "feeling good" and start to either act stupid or throw up on my shoes. I make fun of the first group until they get made at me because frankly I feel if you're going to act stupid you deserve to be mocked and ridiculed.
The second group I don't care for at all. Once in college because you're young and stupid isn't OK, but I'll let it slide. Do it when you're 30 and you're just a pathetic loser. Learn to practice some self control.

Oh, and btw. I drink pretty regularly, but it's almost always a matter of...head to the bar, drink a pint or two of Guinness, shoot the shit with the regulars & staff, take my leave.
I've gotten actually drunk perhaps 3 or 4 times in the last year. Don't drink to get drunk, drink 'cause I enjoy Guinness, and the social aspects of sitting at a bar and talking with folks. I'm almost ALWAYS gone before the little kiddies arrive. Much prefer a quiet bar with a handful of nice people there.
Prolly why I'm still single. Most of the women arrive long after it becomes "too many damn people here" time.

I remember one party I was at in college. It was getting late and I started noticing people go to the frig, open it and then close it without taking anything out. I thought all of the beer must have been gone. I get curious and went to look (since I was drinking vodka and didn't care if the bear was gone). I just let out an "Ah" when I opened it and noticed at least a dozen cans of Keystone Light. I sat back down and downed another shot of vodka.

Hmm...I'm twenty two and I've never had a drink of alcohol. Couple of simple reasons....
1). I have the genes of two alcoholics who were the spawn of some more alocholics whose families are alcoholics. I already know I have addictive tendencies, so I avoid things that getting addicked to would hurt me....unlike another season of FOF.
2). I don't get the idea of going to a bar, getting wasted, saying and doing stupid things, waking up in your own vomit. Which may explain why I have no active social life in a city which is basically a college with a whole street of bars a few blocks over.
3). No real want too. I've thought about going into a bar or just ordering something when I'm out, but then I'm like, "why?" So, I order my Cherry Coke and that's that.

I don't drink because its generally not that fun. Beer tastes like shit, and I don't feel like wasting $30 on a decent bottle of liquor. Mixed drinks taste like shit (and now that I've given up Pepsi, things don't mix well with water). Being drunk is ok, but the day after isn't too much fun. I don't like wine or that stuff, so I'm pretty much left with only shots. Shots just get old after a while, and I'm not in college anymore. Eventually you just grow up.

see, you guys are highly overplaying the "feel like shit the day after/puke all the time" card. i would say on an average week i drink 4 times a week, with the intentions of getting drunk, and i couldn't tell you when the last time i threw up was. also, if you have a glass of water before you go to bed or take an advil (or both), you usually won't get a hangover. truest statement yet.
I drink a glass of Makers & 4-6 beers a night, and have for the last 10 years. Never ever get sick, maybe get 1 hangover a year, never make a jackass of myself (unless i want too), and rarely go to the bar. Ive found the ones who makes jackasses of themselves, or are completely intolerable to be around drunk - are pretty much that way when theyre are sober.
Way to much of equating getting drunk with out of control puking. Kids are supposed to get drunk and puke all over, grown ups dont.

Also everytime i drink more than 3 drinks, either Schmirnoff Ice, Skyy Blue, or Ameretto Sour (my favorite), I always throw up. But come to find out its because I have a couple of hiated hernias and the alcohol was slowly eating away my stomach. :-)

I am just too poor to drink, and I think beer tastes like piss. I bought my boyfriend a 12 pack of Budlight about a month ago and it's still sitting in the fridge.
Budweiser does taste like piss. Drink a nice pint of Irish stout and it's like nectar from the gods.

some beer tastes like shit, yes. particularly junk lagers such as fosters, becks, stella... but there is a lot of beer that is super tasty. no question.
Sadly, I find the stuff that supposed to be "super tasty" not so much, and love the taste of cheap beer. I rarely drink, though.

see, you guys are highly overplaying the "feel like shit the day after/puke all the time" card. i would say on an average week i drink 4 times a week, with the intentions of getting drunk, and i couldn't tell you when the last time i threw up was. also, if you have a glass of water before you go to bed or take an advil (or both), you usually won't get a hangover. (i never really get hungover..)

I think quite a few of us have said we don't like it because we actually enjoy being in control of our mental faculties. And a lot of us would rather spend our money in other ways. I'm pretty sure those have been metioned more than the throwing up aspect but I haven't exactly gone through the thread and taken a head count.

I used to swipe my dad's beer out of the fridge when I was 4 (obviously, he knew when beers were missing, but I guess he didn't mind). I'd drink 'em a bit, and I doubt I got drunk or anything. It's really a blur. Since then, I hadn't had any alcoholic drinks until a sip of champagne at my wedding last year (at age 27). Then I had two sips of a raunchy Thai beer a few months ago, but that's a different story altogether.
I think a lot of the things mentioned here are part of why I don't drink. Since I haven't built up an alcohol tolerance, my character would probably change rather quickly if I had even just a little bit to drink. I don't know who or what I'd become. Maybe I'd be the same. I have no idea, but what would be my motivation to experience that? Why start?
People who have been drinking for a while say that they don't get sick. I wonder if they mean to say that they don't get sick anymore. Again, I have no alcohol tolerance. I don't know my limits. If I was just getting started drinking, would I get sick? Maybe. Why would I even put myself in that situation? Why start?
I used to watch my dad drink, and he only had a few beers at home, but I saw him come home drunk a few nights. Now, thankfully, he didn't come home in a violent rage and hurt me or my family, but he wasn't exactly the most appealing person in the world. I didn't get a "good" image of drinking. I know that you don't have to get drunk every time you drink, but what would be the point of me drinking now? Why start?
I see people drinking all the time. Yesterday, I was at my company's picnic, and many of the adults were drinking beer. Good for them. It doesn't give me anything to complain about. I've played some home poker games, and practically everyone at the table is drinking beer or whiskey except me. No problem. As long as they don't drink to excess and start getting abusive or too wild, they're welcome to drink what they like. They like their beer, I like my Coca-Cola. They have no problems with me, and I have no problems with them. We're all having fun in our own way. They know I don't drink, but they still occasionally offer me a beer. When I say no, they're fine with it. They never make fun of me, and I wouldn't really care if they did. In my head, though, whenever they offer me a drink, I ask myself the same question:

Some of you really need to get over yourselves. You're not special or better because you don't drink.
Hopefully, I can read the "some of you" part of that and correctly infer that you don't see all non-drinkers that way. While there are many non-drinkers who think they're better than people who do drink, there are also some of us who don't use it as a way to polarize people. All other things being equal, I'm not better or worse than someone who drinks. All other things being equal, I'm not better than someone who likes ice cream (I don't like it). All other things being equal, I'm not better than a man who doesn't have a moustache.
There are just some things that make us different, and every time the "drinking vs. non-drinking" issue comes up, I see the same thing on both sides. Some people tend to make fun of people on the other side. Really, some of the people on both sides need to get over themselves.

It wasn't until I got pretty hammered the next year while in New Orleans for Spring Break that I decided I'd had enough. Actually it wasn't a conscious decision. Now, after one drink my body just decides that I've had enough and the thought of another is completely unappealing.

Drinking moderately is great. And drinking moderately can be good for you (wine is good for the heart, ect.). European culture embraces wines and champagne, Arabs don't drink, and I am not sure about Asians. I think it's all our preference. To me, having a drink is a great way to enjoy myself. I am a college student, and I have drunk way too much many times. I don't enjoy it, but I never gotten sick or threw up. I love to go out to dinner, order a glass of wine, beer, ect. Well I wouldn't know how drinking changes in college because I've never been there. I can say that I started drinking a lot more once I got into high school. When I was in elementary school I couldn't drink as much as I could by the time I got into grade 9. After I got kicked out of high school I started drinking quite a bit every day because I had more time on my hands.

yeah i think i agree somewhat with this. i'm a 22 yr old senior in college now, go to western illinois university (generally considered a good "party" school). started drinking heavily between jr.- sr. of high school, once i got to college it reallly blossomed. i mean, goin to bars for the first time and that whole atmosphere, 4 nights a week, etc... then goin home over the summer with all my old friends, i mean there was no offseason.
however, nowadays i rarely go out during the week anymore and actually drink more when i'm home than at college. part of it is just being "past my prime" i think. people who wait til they turn 21 are just hitting their stride, while ive already been drinkin for a good 4-5 years and its just passed me by.
overall though i dont know if i'm good to talk... my hs class was a big drinking class. i'm from the country, and my best friend turned a barn into a bar.. the whole place was wallpapered in... u guessed it: keystone light cases :) still the beer of choice when money is tight, miller light otherwise. puked enough off of jack daniels in hs that i cant touch the stuff now.. just stick strictly to beer.
so long way to get to the answer... i have definitely chilled out from freshman to senior year. just not as important, but when i do drink i tend to get silly stupid and am the life of the party.

I got two posts into this and found one that describes me perfectly. Down to the amaretto sours, even. Weird.
I have a drink once or twice a year, tops, and always for taste. Music is for relaxing/taking the edge off; alcohol makes me sick. I quite enjoy my current state of mind and don't need to be in an altered state to deal with things.

I certainly respect and understand folks' desire not to drink. I didn't have a drink until I was 21 and didn't to start really drink until I was 23 or so. I enjoy it, though it's definitely an acquired taste. I reckon, I have about a drink a night. A beer or a glass or two of wine with dinner. Nothing too excessive. Every once in a while I'll go out and throw 'em back, but luckily when I get drunk I don't get angry or wild, I just sort of slow down and get tired.
Someone was once talking about a friend of their's who was pretty level headed at all times, but got really angry when drunk. They figured that guy had an "inner angry person." They asked me if that was the case and I said "No. I just get tired. I think I have an inner lazy person." So, luckily, I never get into the crazy shit and I also my body is pretty good and refusing to drink when I am pushing my limits. I wake up with a massive headache every once in a while, but nothing more than that.

I greatly enjoy the Chocolate Almond Amore at the Olive Garden. (I know this makes JeeberD proud of me!) A friend of mine makes great mudslides, which I'll enjoy if he's having a cookout (maybe once or twice a year). I sometimes have red wine at major holidays. Every so often I'll have an amaretto sour at weddings.
Other than that, nothing. I'm the guy who orders a Sprite or has water.
It's my dad's fault, really. He let me try his beer when I was, oh, 12 or so. It was the most disgusting thing I'd ever tasted. When you're a poor college student and everybody's having beer, it's easy not to drink because, hey, that stuff is awful. (And yes, I've tried it since, and no, it hasn't gotten any better--beer is perhaps the nastiest substance ever invented.)
Very few of my friends are big drinkers, and my wife drinks even less frequently than I do (if that's possible), so it's just not a part of my social life.

Plus, I've never understood the fun in sitting around (be it in a bar or at someone's house) and doing nothing but talking and drinking liquid, nasty or not. Unless I just worked out or got done with yard work, I can't recall ever sitting around and drinking 2 gallons of ANY liquid over a couple hour period just for fun. Having to pee every 20 minutes doesn't sound like fun to me.
I don't know. Alcohol has never affected me in a "good" way, so I guess I don't see the point. To me, buying alcohol means less money to spend on the things that matter...like CDs.

While I can certainly understand not liking the taste of alcohol or drinking it (as I was thay way for years), I can't quite follow the other part about questioning the "fun" of just hanging out with friends and talking, whether at a bar or someone's house.
I like my friends. I enjoy their company. Hanging out with them and just talking is fun. We share common interests, they are interesting, and we enjoying talking about similar things, exhanging ideas and view points, or debating topics. Sometimes we do it over dinner. Sometimes over drinks. Sometimes while listening to music. Sure, sometimes my friends and I will engage in activities (computer games, role playing, watching a movie/TV, playing a board game, etc.), but not always and often even when we're doing those "activities" we're a drinkin'. Though too much drinking and computer/video games don't always mix well. And role playing and drinking certainly don't.
Alcohol (in moderation of course) puts people at ease and relaxes them (for the most part). It's not a necessary component of hanging out/talking with friends, but it's often welcomed.

Same here...Don't you always offer your friends a drink (regardless of what kind of beverage it is) when you hang out? I think those who don't drink think everyone gets drunk when they'll drink, and thats a big misconception. In college, yes. And every once in a while, it happens. But like HB said, you may a glass of wine or two over dinner with family or friends. Or you may got a game of poker, having a beer or two while enjoying the company of friends.

I understand all of that. I was talking about getting together for the main purpose of drinking. That's all it seemed to be in college, at least what I observed. It was "figure out where we can drink without getting caught," not "let's get together and listen to some CDs or catch a movie, etc., and we might as well have a few drinks while we're at it." Everything revolved around drinking as THE motivating reason for getting together.
As far as alcohol relaxing people...I'll take your word for it. In moderation, it never did anything for me, other than serve as a tasty drink (amaretto, mainly). Come to think of it, I got the same non-responsiveness out of drinking coffee - I hated the taste but thought it would help keep me up during law school. After two weeks and no noticeable difference, I quit.

I guess at this point in my life, my "friends" consist of my wife and two kids. My wife and I are a perfect fit; neither of us are particularly social. We have a few friends, but most of them don't live anywhere near us. So, I can't say we ever "hang out" with anyone.
And no, I don't offer the kids alcohol, although if I can get my wife to down half a wine cooler, she'll get tipsy...

Not that it means much, but this is exactly what I saw a lot of, too. And if it wasn't "lets figure out where we won't get caught", it would be "who will let us crash at their place" or "who has the place closest to the bar" or something like that. The primary reason was the drinking, anything else that happened either because of or inspite of the drinking was incidental.
The people I hung out with would typically grab a movie or play pool or video games or hockey (damn bastards tore down our rink for a skate park) or whatever and then probably end up talking all hours of the night about anything like the movie or politics or television or global domination or whatever. Then again, we were a bunch of giant nerds.

The difference for me, I suppose, is that I went to a religious college where drinking on campus was prohibited and everyone had to live on campus. So finding a place to drink was #1 on the priority list every night.

Now this I can get behind. It's actually one of the main reasons I didn't drink before I was 21. I found the whole idea about just getting together and drink to, just well, drink pretty retarded and a way for kids to feel more mature or some such.
By the time I started drinking my friends, for the most part, were past that. We'd watch hockey and drink. We'd play computer games and drink. We'd watch a movie and drink. It was all about hanging out, the drinking is just a nice bonus.

Yeap. My friends and I would go across the border to Boston Pizza (drinking age is 19). Go out sit, get a pizza or dessert, have a few drinks, go to the casino for maybe a half hour, then come home. Was a great night, no drunk idoits, had a DD (just to be safe), relax, got out, socialize, had some good food and some tasty drinks.
I mean, if your older, I can see your point about just your wife and kids. My step bro and his wife have a strawbeery dacquri everynight with or after they have dinner. Just pends on what you like, and how you do it.

Getting drunk is a good way to make things better with your old girlfriend when you get back from jail.
I figured out a few years ago that the meaning of Christmas is to get drunk and stoned with your friends and family. It's not about present but getting drunk and stoned with your friends and family.
I think my daughter is starting to get drunk but I don't think I should start buying her alcohol until she's 11.

I can be kind of shy sometimes, so at parties I like to get decently buzzed so that I can start telling jokes and whatnot. I really don't mind losing control of my mind functions. In fact, it's kind of nice not knowing what to expect. Maybe I'll get a craving for Cinnamon Rolls at 3 a.m.. Maybe I'll want to read Calvin & Hobbes. Maybe I'll even wank to Ricki Lake re-runs. Maybe I'll start a high speed chase towards Mexico after robbing a gas station with a candy bar, and Kristy Swanson will ride me as the sun goes down. I don't think I could do that sober.

When I was in College (in the 80s), I got bombed quite a bit. By the time I was a Senior, drinking to excess wasn't that appealing. We did it on occasion (like every weekend) , but not every night. Once I graduated, that sort of stopped entirely. Now? With the wife, kid, etc., I probably average 1-2 drinks per month. More in the Summer, less in the Winter. It's just not part of my "social circle" anymore.
Of course, part of that has to do with living in the South. In the land of Baptists, drinking is evil. Dancing is evil. :) In all seriousness, there's a lot less drinking around here than, say, in Boston or Florida. When I lived in Pensacola, you drank. When I lived in Boston, you drank. Here? Not nearly as much.

I've never drunk a drop of alcoholic beverage in my life. I like who I am, I awlays want to be in total control of myself, I think getting drunk is a sin, and I have no tolerance for the smell, which is plain nasty.
Why would I want to drink it? Instead of asking people why they don't do something (which is an awful lot of stuff), ask why they do something. Why do people drink? In the list of answers to that question, I find none that tempt me.
