Just a quick question for you guys. I'm looking to renegotiate some of my better players contracts to free up some cap room for the upcoming season, so I can add a few free agents. But before I do I was wanting someone to explain bonuses to me. Let's say that a player has a current salary of $3,730,000 for 2004 with a $1,770,000 bonus. After trying to renegotiate, he is looking for $950,000 for '04 and a $6,550,000. So is this contract really just going to eat up more cap because of the higher bonus? I will post the full life of the contract below.

Example (Current)
Year........Base salary; Bonus
1st year $3,730,000 million; $1,770,000
2nd year $4,650,000 million; $1,770,000
3rd year $5,580,000 million; $1,770,000
4th year $6,790,000 million; $1,770,000

Example (Renegotiated)
Year........Base salary; Bonus
1st year $950,000 million; $6,550,000
2nd year $3,690,000 million; $6,550,000
3rd year $4,610,000 million; $6,550,000
4th year $5,710,000 million; $6,550,000

yeah, that's a contract you definitely don't want to renegotiate. It's much cheaper to play him under the current contract. You should only renegotiate if the player is at the end of his contract and you want to keep him around or if the renegotiation will save cap space without tying up too much money in bonus.

Sorry, I posted that wrong. The bonus is $6,550,000 over the life of the contract, not per season. Also, the player is young (if that should factor into the decision).

1.) Keep the old pro-rated bonus on the books for each year (you can't make that go away).

2.) Add that to the new bonus pro-rated over the life of the new contract (6.55 mil / 4 years).

3.) Add to that the salary for the new contract for each year.

That will be your cap hit for each season. In the case you cite above, you don't really change much by renegotiating, so I would not do it.

Does anyone know a % that you can knockoff a players asking price and them still accept the offer or extension?

Not really. It's trial and error--more art than science. To my knowlege, I don't think that anyone has an exact formula (at least one that they want to share in the multiplayer era). One thing that you can do is run tests in Single Player games in which you keep making different offers and see what kinds of offers stick and which ones don't.
